TEDxManhattanBeach - Barry Ptolemy - Transcendent Man Talk title: Transcendent Man: a documentary about inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil To understand the future of education - indeed the future of anything - we must understand the role that technology will play in our future. Barry's film Transcendent Man explores the ideas of Ray Kurzweil, who offers us the law of "accelerating returns." Throughout history, each new technology has been built upon previous ones, and each new wave of ideas has been accepted more rapidly than the last. From the Gutenberg printing press to the telephone to the massive early computers, to the PC and on to the iPhone, we're headed for a world of artificial intelligence, in which computers will one day be small enough to fit inside a red blood cell. We must embrace change, or be swept away by it. As publishing, music, health and manufacturing industries have radically changed, so will education. We can pair every student with a computer tablet, an object we ought to call a "gateway to all human knowledge." At age twelve, Barry Ptolemy worked and studied closely alongside director Steven Spielberg on the set of ET, The Extra Terrestrial and became a filmmaker himself. After attending USC film school, Barry's interest in the sciences led him to read Ray Kurzweil's The Singularity is Near, upon which he based his first feature film, Transcendent Man. He also directed the commercial "We Are The World 25 For Haiti" featuring Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones -- the commercial aired during the Vancouver

Republicans in Minnesota's Senate have a new leader, but no change of heart when it comes to gay marriage. Newly elected Senate Majority Leader rejected Governor Mark Dayton's request to remove an anti-gay marriage constitutional amendment from the 2012 general election ballot. "Oh we didn't get into that" said Senjem, referring to the 11-hour closed door debate among Republican Senators that preceded his election. "It's way too early to talk about that. No I think this caucus and certainly the House is on record on that and in my mind that's in the well and I don't think we're ready to consider that right now." Senator Senjem replaces former Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch who resigned her post after having "inappropriate relations" with a male senate staffer. Governor Mark Dayton suggests that Koch's affair at the same time she was working to pass the anti-gay marriage amendment in the Senate was hypocritical. “I think it underscores that sanctity of marriage is important to most Minnesotans and people who are in same-sex relationships believe in that sanctity also and want a chance to participate in the sanctity in the same way as heterosexual couples,” Dayton told Minnesota Public Radio’s All Things Considered. "I will say, before you take out the speck in your neighbor’s eye, take the log out of your own eye. Somebody whose conduct doesn’t measure up to what they’re professing to believe in or prescribing for others, then they should be called on that", said Dayton. Governor Dayton issued a statement shortly after Senator Senjem's election: “I have placed a telephone call to Senator David Senjem, to congratulate him on his election as the Senate’s new Majority Leader. I look forward to a constructive working relationship with him on behalf of the people of Minnesota.”

August 9, 1997, 12:00 pm: "Hacking for the Next Century." In this age of heightened awareness about security and hacking, where have all the good hacks gone? Too many are claiming the title "hacker" when they are no more than snot-nosed wannabe posers. Or worse, downright petty criminals, as was witnessed at Defcon when people were trying to pass counterfeit bills and bad counterfeit bills at that. Brock will talk about where hackers have come from, where they've gone, and where they should head into the new millennium.

August 9, 1997, 4:00 pm: From encryption to digital signatures to electronic commerce to secure voting - cryptography has become the enabling technology that allows us to take existing business and social constructs and move them to computer networks. But a lot of cryptography is bad, and the problem with bad cryptography is that it looks just like good cryptography; most people cannot tell the difference. Security is a chain: only as strong as the weakest link. In this talk Bruce Schneier will take a look at the future of cryptography: the needs, the threats, the limits of technology, and the promise of the future.

Reason-Rupe Poll: Do Americans Feel Safer After 9/11, TSA, and Foreign Wars?
As the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks arrives, do Americans feel safer after the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and military interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq? According to the new Reason-Rupe poll of 1200 US adults, "62 percent say we have less personal freedom today" but "81 percent have faith that the security measures implemented" has made America safer from terrorist attacks. Reason's Katherine Mangu-Ward talks with Emily Ekins, Reason's polling director, to find out what post-9/11 America thinks about today's national security, personal freedoms, and the Iraq War. This Reason-Rupe poll surveyed a random, national sample of 1200 adults by telephone (790 on landlines, 410 on cell phones) over August 9-18, 2011. The overall results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. The full Reason-Rupe survey is online here (reason.com and ongoing analysis is online here (reason.com This Reason Foundation project is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Arthur N.
