Scott Matthew - "Sinking": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
"For some it seems a mistake, for me it's a way of life." It's a lyric from Aussie-born New Yorker, Scott Matthew's new album, which also tells the story of Matthews' own journey. In a nutshell, it's a life of tragically beautiful music, brimming with longing for a sanctuary; a place to wait for a love that will surely come some day. For this bearded angel - whom Rolling Stone mag aptly likens to Antony Hegarty and androgynous-era Bowie - writing and recording third solo album, Gallantry's Favorite Son, was the time "I came to terms with myself". The result is a more confident, self-assured Matthew tackling issues like bigotry, intolerance and afterlives. With confidence comes joy too, so in first single "The Wonder Of Falling In Love" we find Matthew dancing in a more playful pop playground reminiscent of 2009's "Thistle." Together with newie "Felicty," Matthew weaves connectors between Scott Walker and Devendra Banhart; Council-era Paul Weller and Burt Bacharach's lush string pop. But that doesn't mean the goose bumps have diminished. Matthew's emotive quiver still "cuts like lovingly administered razors" [Sydney Morning Herald]. In haunting new songs like "Sinking," "Buried Alive" and "Black Bird," the man whose worldwide mustering of hearts in queer-comedy-drama Shortbus [director John Cameron Mitchell's follow-up to Hedwig & The Angry Inch] continues stealing breath. Administering to the listener's innermost core, he offers an elixir of dark cabaret, restorative folk ... From: sxsw Views: 188 6 ratings Time: 03:07 More in Music

Humans - "Avec Mes Mecs": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
So it's not entirely true that opposites attract, but it is true that when two opposites get together, things become a lot less mundane. This is certainly what's happened between Robbie Slade and Peter Ricq, the musicians behind Vancouver indie-electro-pop dance duo, Humans. Their debut EP, Avec Mes Mecs, which translates into English as "with my friends," or "with my bros," is just one facet of Humans' sound, which the two say is never going to be the same twice. Just when you say "I think we found our sound, we find something else," says Ricq. This state of flux is essential to Humans' sound, as much as it changes it. Humans bring together the big beats of Ricq's past as a warehouse party promoter/performer and the melodic sensibility of Slade's days as a firefighter-turned-folk musician. The title track, written after what Slade calls "many days of absolutely brilliant partying" following New Year's Eve, is a celebration of being together. With the refrain, "who knew that all we had to do was party", serving as the clarion call for all those looking to come together in a mess of bodies and smiles. Humans capture the blind, full, captivating joy of letting everything go for a while, and giving into the fun. After these debauched days, which Slade says were "about as tame as you can be spending three days drinking without clothes," Ricq taught him how to use a 505 Arpeggiator and side by side, the two wrote out their experience to the beat. Both are most comfortable in a ... From: sxsw Views: 358 15 ratings Time: 03:18 More in Music

The Parlotones - "Should We Fight Back": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
In the last 12 months The Parlotones have: - released the platinum selling "Stardust Galaxies" which won Best Rock Album at the 2010 SAMA's - released the platinum selling, live recording of their show at The Coco Cola Dome -- "Live Design" - performed at the Opening World Cup Concert to a billion viewers - completed a 70 city world tour and entered 3 Billboard charts in the USA - launched a Carbon Free Campaign Free Campaign, with The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC3), to reforest areas in South Africa with indigenous trees. ("Stars Fall Down" is the official soundtrack of the drive and the music video is the visual embodiment of the campaign). In their home country, South Africa, the band's profile is such that they were chosen to play the 2009 Presidential Inauguration, Africa Day and at Live Earth. Their innovative, big-production music videos have been nominated for MTV awards. In November 2009, fans packed the Dome in Johannesburg and helped the Parlotones make history (first time a South African band headlined this venue) - the CD/DVD "Live Design" documenting the event, bears testimony to this. Their success is not limited to their music alone -- the band have their own brands of wine 'Giant Mistake' and 'Push me the Floor' which has earned the band a no.1 spots in the Sunday Times wine list and distribution through major European retailers. (The third variant "We Call This Dancing" has just been released). Their music has also been made available in ... From: sxsw Views: 122 6 ratings Time: 03:18 More in Music

We travel to the US city of San Fransisco where a seven show run recently wrapped up. Here's that report. It was an eye-opening experience for audience members at San Francisco's War Memorial Opera House. [Arthur Giacalone, Psychologist]: "Personally, I'm very impressed with the physical nature of what the performers can do. The fact that they are so flexible and maintained a sense of beauty and fluidity while they're being flexible and using their bodies%mdashto me that's the art of peak performance." [Robin Frost, Real Estate Broker]: "They're so synchronized in what they do. And I admire the training. It's not like an overnight thing%mdashyou can tell... It's the mental. That's the discipline. Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel's Engagement
[LESS INFO] 5 VIEWS | ADDED 22:20:18 01/10/12
Hi I'm Sian Welby and welcome to your brand, spanking new 2012 edition of OK! Insider.
She's famous for starring in Hollywood blockbusters such as 500 days of Summer but now Zooey Deschanel is hitting the small screen in a brand new TV show, New Girl. In this week's OK! Zooey talks about relating to her character, Jess, ditching the quirkiness and how she's turned up on British TV!
Speaking about her New Girl character, Zooey says: I always like to think of her as a 13-year-old version of myself. She's sort of sweet and guileless and, at the same time, excitable and emotional.
The star also explains: When I read this script, I just fell in love with it. We have such great writers, and I feel really lucky every week. It's one of the most fun characters I've ever gotten to play.
From an American doing well in Britain, to a Brit doing well in America - - just a bit - Simon Cowell has opened up this week about missing home, and reveals his new darling... Alesha Dixon and talks long term plans to conquer America.
The 52-year-old music mogul, who has been living it up in the LA with the US X Factor, suggests that he may not be staying there forever and says: I miss Britain, I miss the British public and I miss judging them. It's the year of the Olympics, it's a big year for Britain.‚
With Alesha Dixon reportedly leaving Strictly Come Dancing for Britain's Got Talent, Simon says: “I love Alesha. She's feisty, opinionated and knows what it's like to be both a competitor and a judge on a hugely popular TV show.”
And in other news, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel's hopes of keeping their engagement quiet for just a little longer were dashed when Justin's own grandmother confirmed the news.
He called me on Christmas Day to tell me he's engaged,’ said an excited Sadie Bomar says, adding that Justin had asked her to keep quiet about the news until after the holidays.
Well this counts as after the holidays doesn't it?
The family love Jessie. She's a very sweet girl.
Other sources close to the couple say that, after years of an on/off relationship, JT finally popped the question over the Christmas holidays on a snowboarding trip to Wyoming. He reportedly, chose the spot deliberately because he knows how much she loves the mountains.
Friends of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis are playing down reports that their relationship is in trouble following claims that the Pirates Of The Caribbean star is consulting with lawyers about ending their union.
A source said: ‘Their relationship is heading toward the end. They're not married but they've been together for years and have kids together so it isn't as easy as just breaking up.
However, another pal says that the pair have always had a temperamental relationship and not to write them off as a couple just yet. Watch this space!
That's just about it from me for this week. Don't forget to check out this week's OK! magazine - on sale now. And for the latest up to date news and gossip, get Tweeting at the address below! Bye for now.
