She was the first Muslim woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and only the fifth Muslim to receive a Nobel Prize in any field. Dr. Ebadi was also one of the first female judges in Iran. She served as president of the city court of Tehran from 1975 to 1979, but was dismissed from her position after the Islamic Revolution in February 1979. After obtaining her lawyer’s license in 1992, Dr. Ebadi entered private practice. With a history that spans more than nine millennia, Iran is home to one of the world's oldest continuous civilizations, but one that still remains much of an enigma to the rest of the world. How does Iran differ from the other countries of the Middle East and how does its past inform its present and future states? This week will look back on the country formerly known as Persia, examine its emergence as present-day Iran, and postulate what might be next for one of the most important Islamic countries in the world. - Chautaqua Institution
