"TIGERS ON FACEBOOK, join our page here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Big-Cat-Rescue-Tampa-FL/122174836956?ref=sgm When a raccoon was spotted above one of our snow leopard enclosures, BCR staff and volunteers sprang into action! The raccoon had a plastic jar stuck on it's head and was very distressed, Scott managed to net the raccoon and the jar was dislodged. The raccoon was fine and was released far away from the big cat enclosures! R.I.P Snorkel the Tiger …
[LESS INFO] 22 VIEWS | ADDED 11:57:56 07/24/11
"As a cub, Snorkel spent his early years forced to pose as a prop with people for their photos. Then he ended up caged for years at a family circus.Luckily, he found a true safe haven at Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, FL. Watch as he finally enjoys a taste of the wild and, for the first time in his life, was able to run...still much less than he truly deserves. *Snorkel passed away on 3-12-10, we were told that he was born in 1989 not 1996 (typo on the video) making him around 21 years old! Help WWF, The International Tiger Coalition and Big Cat Rescue tighten regulations to protect captive tigers in the U.S and prevent the increased demand for tiger products that put wild populations at risk. Sign WWF's petition to Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack asking them to use their authority to close existing loopholes in the permitting and monitoring of captive tigers in the U.S. SIGN THE PETITION HERE: http://bit.ly/aC1IFN At present, there is currently no way to determine how many captive tigers are in the U.S., where they are, who owns them, or what happens to them when they die. This makes them an easy target for black market sales, stimulating demand for tiger products and threatening wild populations by putting them at increased risk of poaching. Please sign the petition, our goal is to double the number of wild tigers by 2022, the next Year of the Tiger. LIGER at the Dentist!
[LESS INFO] 31 VIEWS | ADDED 07:43:18 07/24/11
"Lion Tiger = LIGER! Freckles was rescued from a failed backyard sanctuary in mississippi Dec 2008. 16 year old Freckles is one of the oldest Ligers around but she is one of the most recent arrivals to Big Cat Rescue. At the time of her rescue we could see a big hole in her jowl, and feared that it would lead to her demise, but she was in such bad shape that we just couldn't risk knocking her out to get a better look. Being a cranky old cat, she wasn't about to let us get a good look any other way either. She was given antibiotics in case it was just an injury, but now that she has become more calm in her new setting we can see that the problem stems from several broken teeth. Caged cats will often break off their teeth trying to chew their way out of their prison cells and when she was left behind to die in Mississippi she probably did just that. The dental work was completed on Freckles without any problems and she as made a full recovery. Let's hope that the dental as taken away her pain and she will have no more problems in the future. This procedure cost Big Cat Rescue a lot of money so if you would like to help us pay for the cost of her treatment please visit: http://www.bigcatrescue.org/donate.htm THANK YOU! Leopards Helping Tigers!

"CONSERVATION CANINES...A comprehensive non-invasive sampling method using detection dogs to simultaneously acquire scat samples from multiple species and guilds. When Big Cat Rescue were asked to participate in a program to help save tigers we jumped at the chance! The Center for Conservation Biology at the University of Washington developed the scat detection dog program in 1997 and they needed scat samples from our asian leopards in order to train their Conservation Canines before heading out to Cambodia to collect data! We're never short of leopard poop at the sanctuary and two of our senior keepers set about bagging and tagging a week's worth of leopard scat to ship up to Washington to help train the dogs. The dogs Scooby and Sadie are doing a great job out in the field and the program is going well, this is another way that Big Cat Rescue can help not just captive big cats but conservation projects around the world! CIRCUS
[LESS INFO] 28 VIEWS | ADDED 04:22:53 07/24/11
"The CIRCUS is NO FUN for the animals... Big Cat Rescue does something called Operant Conditioning to teach our cats to do things we need them to do for medical reasons, such as lean against the fence to get their shots or open their mouth so we can look at their teeth. We do this with rewards and the cats have fun because they are smart and bored and love the attention. We never punish or withhold food to make them do something, and the cats only do it when they want to -- not on our schedule. But because tigers and lions in circus acts must perform specific acts at precise times and ""the show must go on,"" positive reinforcement is not the only method used by circus trainers or night club magicians. Often the cats are beaten, starved and confined for long periods of time in order to get them to cooperate with what the trainers want. And life on the road means that most of a cat's life is spent in a circus wagon in the back of a semi-truck or in a crowded, stinking box car on a train or barge. The messages the public gets from circus acts couldn't be worse. These acts either show man dominating one of nature's most magnificent creatures, which would never happen on an even playing field, or worse are promoted as illustrations of the ""special bond"" the trainer has with his captive. The latter just fuels the trade in big cats as pets and that never ends well for the cat. Last, but not least, circus acts are transient and often are a way of moving big cats across state lines or even in and out of the country. Because the endangered species protection acts are so poorly enforced, this transience creates a legal cover for the illegal importation and exportation of exotic cats. If a circus act leaves the U.S. with 10 tigers and comes back with 25, they can just say that the 15 additional tigers were born on the road -- there is no way to prove it if they were taken from the wild. No U.S. government agency tracks the ages nor the individual cats in private collections. "An African Serval was limping along in the Arizona desert until she collapsed alongside a road. She had almost completely given up the will to live. She was probably a pet or perhaps used in the hybrid breeding scheme that has become all the rage where Servals are bred to domestic house cats to produce Savannah Cat hybrids. The domestic cats are often killed in the process. The kittens sell for thousands of dollars, but when they mature they typically spray and bite and make awful pets. The hybrids are usually discarded by the time they are two or three years old. TIGER SHOT and KILLED! - Big Cat TV

"*Update 2-08, the authorities have recieved our information and are working on the case. The same day the tragic tiger event happened at the San Francisco Zoo, a horrific story seemed to fall through the cracks. Thank you. Big Cat Rescue http://www.bigcatrescue.org By DAVID SCHECHTER / WFAA-TV DALLAS - Sanitation crews in Dallas made a shocking discovery after they received a call about a dead animal on Christmas Day. A female Bengal tiger was found dead when the crews searched a wooded area near Interstate 35E and Overton Road. A city spokesperson said the tiger was shot several times. The animal, which was declawed and wearing a make-shift leash, was taken to the Dallas Zoo. A necropsy, the animal version of an autopsy, was completed at the zoo early Thursday evening. The tiger was estimated to be around one-years-old and weighed about 180 pounds. Shell casing were found in the tiger's chest and face. In all, there were five bullet entries. Chuck Siegel, deputy director of the Dallas Zoo, said he believes the tiger may have become more than the owner could handle. ""I find it very, very disturbing to see the nature of the collar-leash, which looks more like a bicycle cable than anything else,"" he said. ""And this rusted wire, which is tangled around the leash, is obviously very hazardous."" The Texas Parks

"Being a hero for the animals is a 24-7 responsibility. And it can be a lot of fun as well! In this off beat video we see three examples of what it takes to do right for the animals. In the first part we take at look at what happens when our long time manager Scott tries to go off grounds for just a second. His path crosses with a bird in need and returns to the sanctuary to become the ""snake bird's"" hero. The second part is a quick look at the ""Bearcat"" and its being included in our great operant conditioning program full of animal heroes. And the video closes with a look at two local boys who saved some kittens from sure death by going into a sewer drain and getting them out! "We are proud to have some of the happiest cats around. And right now our sand cats are at the top of that list as they love their new sand. A BCR supporter named Lindsay chose to have her friends give money to donate to a project for us rather than spend it on gifts for her. When donating money you can earmark the donation and tell us exactly what you want that money to go to. She picked a ""Casper project"" (named after a cougar we all loved) and wanted sand to be put in our sand cat enclosures. We were happy to add to her donation, so we could get three huge loads of sand. Watch along as our sand cats Canyon and Genie explore and check out their homes.
