Holiday Buying Guide - JBL OnBeat Xtreme
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 22:47:49 12/15/11
JBL OnBeat Xtreme
Michael Butler and Sam Levin are back with more in the holiday buying guide series for 2011. This time, they're reviewing and demonstrating the JBL OnBeat Xtreme high-performance loudspeaker dock for iOS devices with Bluetooth® wireless technology. Here are some of the features at a glance.
• Docks with iPod, iPhone and iPad devices
• High-quality Bluetooth® wireless music streaming
• Dock your iPod, iPhone or iPad device in portrait or landscape orientation
• JBL® Ridge tweeters and Atlas woofers offer computer-optimized DSP equalization
• Hands-free calling with Bluetooth phones
So, what's the big deal with another docking speaker? As Sam points out, this is *not* just another docking speaker. It has video out and USB in the back, it has Apple Airplay built in and it uses an RF remote (not line of sight, so you can change volume from another corner of the room or even another room). But those are just the frills. What sets this speaker system apart is the HUGE sound - as Sam and Michael demo.
At $599.95 retail, Sam notes that the JBL OnBeat Xtreme is "not a cheap thrill, but it is a thrill."
Available at Amazon today for $499 with free shipping !

291 - ScreenFloat, DashKards & PhotoSync [Trailer]
[LESS INFO] 49 VIEWS | ADDED 09:12:56 04/01/11
Time for another Mini Montage show this week, and I’ve decided to cover three great utilities, two for the Mac and one for the Mac and iOS
#ScreenFloat
You know what it’s like when you’re working in full screen mode within an application, and then you want to reference some information on another application. It’s either a matter or switching two and fro between windows, or you start resizing and repositioning windows so you can see one whilst working in the other. It’s even worse if you’re working in Spaces!
Well ScreenFloat is a Mac app that allows you to grab a section of the screen and then “floats” it above the screen, allowing you to see it always. It will even follow you from space to space. As well as allowing you to capture these “shots”, it also provides you with a browser, enabling you to optionally store these mini clips for later retrieval.
#DashKards
I’ve covered DashKards before, but they’ve had a significant update. DashKards are incredibly useful “cheat sheets” that live in your OSX dashboard. There are DashKards available for lots of OSX applications as well as more general DashKards, web apps and other stuff. The big change is that they no longer require you to create Safari Web clippings for each DashKard you wish to install. They are now contained in a proper dashboard widget. This section demonstrates installing this new widget, and some of the new features and benefits of the latest version of DashKards.
#PhotoSync
You know how irritating it is to have to wait until you’re back at your Mac to transfer photos off your iOS device to your Mac. And then having to physically connect it with a USB cable! Or how daft is it that to transfer photos or videos off your iPhone or iPod touch to your iPad, you have to buy a $40 camera connection kit, and then have to wire them together?
It is 2011 isn’t it?
Well, PhotoSync brings you Mac and iOS devices into the wonderful world of wireless transfers!
This section shows you how to use PhotoSync to wirelessly transfer your photos and videos directly to your Mac. You can send your photos and images directly to a folder, straight into iPhoto or even straight into Aperture - no USB cable required. Want to send from your Mac directly to your iOS device, no problem! PhotoSync will allow you to sync both ways.
Want to use the new iMovie on your iPad 2 to take advantage of the larger screen size but you shot your video using your iPhone. No problem, as PhotoSync will let you wirelessly transfer your video from your iPhone to your iPad.
It even allows you to transfer your images directly from your iOS device into Flickr - all done wirelessly

Hands on: Gigabyte T1125N Netvertible
[LESS INFO] 336 VIEWS | ADDED 09:10:56 11/02/10
http://www.netbooknews.com Want a tablet and a notebook? Well there is a category in between where the notebook turns into a tablet, we fondly refer to it as the netvertible category. Gigabyte has been making these for a few generations now, their latest one being the most interesting. The 11.6 T1125 comes in 3 varieties the lowest version spec wise (T1125M) is aimed at the emerging markets, which ones we are still waiting to find out. We got some hands on time with the T1125N which comes in Core i3 & i5 sporting NVIDIA GeForce 310M DDRIII 512MB and supports NVIDIA Optimus Technology. Connectivity wise we are looking at 1 USB 3.0, 2 x USB 2.0, esata, audio jacks, vga, 4 in 1 card reader & a port for the docking station which will house the DVD burner. Getting online you've got a few options Bluetooth 2.1 if you want to tether, 802.11 b/g/n Wireless and a 3.5G module is optional but the antenna is already built in. The booktop docking station is what set Gigabyte notebooks apart, they have been playing around with various configurations as the M1305 & M1405 have a different style of docking station. The important question that we should be asking right now is how much is this going to cost and when is it going to be available. Unfortunately there is no word but they are trying to get it for sale for Christmas but it sounds like we shouldn't hold our breath and CES is much more likely. Below the video you'll find the spec sheet for the T1125N & T1125M. Here is the video showing off the 2 speakers and 2 subwoofers as well as the docking station in action.

Moblin v2.1 on a Netbook
Ive been playing a little with the latest Moblin release this afternoon and Im actually thinking of trying to run it full-time on a netbook. Theres a few holes yet, but it does offers me much of what Im looking for in a smartbook %mdash a lightweight operating system and good browsing experience. My wireless broadband modem isnt working, nor is my sound or my Bluetooth, so theres a few gotchas just yet. The Bluetooth might be easily fixable in my netbook BIOS, but no sound on the Toshiba NB205 is a reported known bug. In this 11 minute video, I think youll see why Im walking away impressed. The user interface is intuitive, although it will take some getting used to, and the overall environment is fluid and snappy. Bear in mind that Im running a live image from a USB drive, so an actual installation should perform even better. Maybe its time to turn the Toshiba into a triple-booter: Windows XP, Windows 7 and Moblin! From: KevinCTofel Views: 16917 43 ratings Time: 10:54 More in Science & Technology

Hella Expensive Tech

WTF!!!!!!
It's Thursday. Day two of this week's MEVIO Tech WTF.
Today Carlos, and special guest Greg Nice bring you a list of redonkulously expensive gadgets and things. They call this Hella Expensive Tech. So here we go:
First up is by Axiotron. It is a mod to the Apple Macbook pro that turns it into a fully functional tablet Mac. It's called the Modbook Pro, and it packed with features, including: Ethernet, FireWire® 800, USB 2.0 (x2), Mini DisplayPort, digital audio, ExpressCard/34 slot and Bluetooth – plus a three-button keybar for on/off, Mod Key and battery indicator. On the top of the Modbook Pro is the optical drive bay and pen garage with magnetic pen catch. It also has handwriting recognition software that will read even the worst handwriting.
http://www.axiotron.com/index.php?id=modbookpro
Next: The Clearaudio Statement Turntable. This turntable is the highest of the highest end for your vinyl.
Featuring:
# Patented magnetic-driven sub-platter (makes no contact with main platter)
# Additional magnetic vertical platter bearing
# All platters dynamically balanced
# Kardan turntable chassis suspension
# Automatic horizontal levelling device including tonearm platforms (no air pump or compressor)
# 80kg pendulum weight for self levelling of top platform
# High speed microprocessor-controlled motor drive unit (as used in Mars Rover)
# Oil damping devices for the main turntable chassis
# Real-time speed control and active blue LCD display
# Ergonomic fine speed adjustment (33, 45 and 78rpm)
# Accommodates up to four different tonearms
# Complete resonance control via damped and sandwiched bullet-proof wood (Panzer Holz), stainless steel and acrylic construction.
Unless you're Donald Trump, you might want to pass on this as it will set you back $150,000. Ouch. I hope it at least fetches you a glass of fine wine while you listen.

#3 on the list is a bit more down to earth: V-Moda Vibe Earbuds
These metal alloy crafted earbuds brings a sophisticated design to your listening pleasure without breaking the bank. They feature hi-definition sound with rich vibrant dynamic range. They provide three different sized fittings to assure comfort while you wear them. They also have very good noise reduction capability. They run about $99.

#4 on the Hella Expensive Tech list is an oldie, but a goodie: the Harmon Kardon Soundsticks
"Harman Kardon's SoundSticks II three-piece speaker system produces high-quality stereo sound for Music, MP3's, movies and gaming experiences.
SoundSticks II encourages consumers to step out of the ordinary speaker world and offers sound in an original and unique package. The system, described as curvy, sleek and sexy, provides consumers with sound that is loud and clear.
SoundSticks II employs a new computer-optimized multi-band parametric equalization and Harman’s unique ”capacitance touch“ control buttons on the right satellite allow for direct access to volume control"

And last on the list is from a company called Glacier Computer called the W200 Wearable Computer.
Running the Windows CE or Linux operating systems the W200 boasts a 3.5” 320 x 240 resolution color display with touch screen, backlit keyboard and a hot swappable battery pack. The integrated wired or wireless interfaces including plug and play Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS modules ensure continuous connectivity to access a remote host system. In addition to an electronic compass, the system also boasts power saving features such as a tilt and dead reckoning system which puts the device into standby when it detects the arm is hanging down beside the user’s body. Weighing just 10.2 ounces, (290 grams), and shaped to fit the contours of the arm the rugged W200 includes 128MB of Flash and 128MB of RAM memory and is water resistant.

In a bit of an extra, Carlos tells us of a story from Gizmodo about the new iPod Shuffle that says that the $79 iPod actually only costs $27 to make.
http://i.gizmodo.com/5209850/new-shuffle-costs-apple-2177-to-build
That'll do it for the Thursday edition of MEVIO Tech WTF. Be sure to tune into tomorrow to see what Carlos and the boys have in store for you.
