Ask Dr. Veronica - To Paula Deen: Man Vs. Food
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 20:11:13 02/08/12
As a doctor, I am always telling people to eat fruits and vegetables (these end up replacing sugar for the most part), move to sea salt, get excited about eating quality whole grains and turn to good fats like avocados, nuts or olive oil. I'm human though and of course there are times when I want to have some sugar. That's when making the choice to have raw (turbinado) sugar or stevia makes sense. Sea salt naturally helps your release excess water -- who needs water retention -- AND it has higher mineral content. Quinoa is a food that is so undervalued yet it has amazing properties. Not only does it taste great, but it is high in protein so when you have pasta made from quinoa, you end up loading up on the healthiest of proteins while scaling back on all the white, processed junk from typical white flour or rice pasta. Good fats like those that come from coconut or olive oil, nuts and avocados actually taste better than lard, which should only be used as a skin moisturizer and not as a food, mind you. Here's what I have to say to Paula: We all love tasty food. In fact, I enjoy comfort food whenever I end up having it -- probably once a year around Thanksgiving. But take it from someone that has a lot of color in her life; make the simple switch to natural products. You need to get out of that southern mentality at least when it comes to the ingredients in your delicious southern foods -- and start infusing a LOT more color into them. I feel bad that Paula is sitting on top of worldwide scrutiny after signing on with a drug company as their spokesperson almost days after revealing to the world she has diabetes. But how much of this is really her fault? What could be worse than having to share your personal plight with a totally preventable disease, than to have an international pharmaceutical company pounce all over you while only considering what's in it for them? Shame on the selfish company Novo Nordisk (the maker of the diabetes drug Victoza) for taking advantage of Paula at a time like this! -- http://www.AskDrVeronica.com/ http://www.blogtalkradio.com/WellnessForTheRealWorld http://www.facebook.com/DrVeronicaAnderson http://www.facebook.com/DrVeronicaEyeMD http://www.twitter.com/DrVeronicaEyeMD http://www.linkedin.com/in/DrVeronicaAnderson http://www.youtube.com/user/WeLLness4REALWorld http://www.DrVeronica.com/blog

New Releases For February 7, 2012 - Press Pause Daily
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 04:00:00 02/07/12
This week’s new releases will bring a reckoning with it’s revelations of impostors in the darkness.
SHOW NOTES:
GAME 1: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
First up we have Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. This game is a single player action role playing game that has some heavyweight talent behind it, starting with lead designer Ken Rolston, who worked on The Elder Scrolls 3 and 4. Also involved was fantasy author R.A. Salvatore, who created the game’s universe, and comic legend Todd McFarlane who created the artwork.
The game itself will feature unique real-time combat with a in depth character creation system, that features many races and character customization. There are millions of skills, abilities, weapons, and armor to choose from. It has a beautiful open world, and features a Destiny System that will change the game depending on how you built your character, and the items you have equipped.
Combat will depend heavily on how you’ve designed you character, and there are also unique special attacks that are based on the type of weapons you have equipped.
If you love your role playing with a big side of action, then this sounds like just the game to scratch your RPG itch.
GAME 2: Resident Evil: Revelations
Next up we have the latest entry in the long running Resident Evil series making it’s way to the 3DS.
Resident Evil: Revelations features a brand new story set between the events of Resident Evil 4 and 5, and will feature series favorites Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine. Shortly after the creation of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance, a major bioterrorism event happens and the BSAA is called to investigate. The game looks to bring the classic survival horror gameplay of earlier games, with action taking place aboard an infected ocean liner among other locations.
The game will make use of both the 3DS systems 3D visuals, as well as using the touch screen to help solve puzzles.
If you own a 3DS and are looking for some good creepy fun. This might be just the game for you.
GAME 3: The Darkness II
Next we have the sequel to the surprise hit game based on the Top Cow comic book series The Darkness.
The Darkness II again has you playing as Jackie Estacado, who has now become head of the Franchetti crime family, and has contained the power of the Darkness. Now that power wants out and there are also other who want the power for themselves, and will stop at nothing to obtain it. All of this precipitates a full scale Mob war, with you right in the middle of it.
As with the last game, this is a first person shooter, and you had the ability to use weapons or your Darkness powers to take out your enemies. This time, the developers have added what they are calling quad-wielding, which will allow you to use both weapons and Darkness powers at the same time.
There will be many weapons and powers for you to use, and the game will also have multiplayer options including a 4 player co-op mode called Vendettas that will run parallel to the main single player story.
With it’s intense comic book story telling, and distinctive noire visual style, The Darkness II could be a nice little FPS palate cleanser for those of you still playing Call of Duty.
GAME 4: Gotham City Impostors
And lastly this week we have an interesting downloadable title that sounds completely ridiculous, but awesome at the same time.
Gotham City Impostors is a multiplayer-only first person shooter that pits two teams against each other as they try to kill each other. The twist is that one team is dressed as Batman, the other as The Joker. Like I said...ridiculous, but awesome.
The game will have eight player simultaneous gameplay, and has a over the top visual style. The game will feature traditional weapons, like guns and knives. It will also have more outlandish weapons like a jack in the box grenade, and a rocket launcher made of PVC pipes. You’ll also have access to many gadgets such as grappling hooks, glider wings, and roller skates.
This sounds like something that could be really dumb fun. And as a $15 downloadable title, it sounds like an easy choice.
That will do it for your daily dose of Press Pause. You can always find all our episodes over at presspause.mevio.com . You can also check them out over at our Youtube channel: youtube.com/presspausemevio .

GOP Debates Exposing Conservative Dislike of Romney, Not So For '08 Dem Field
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 19:00:09 02/05/12
So Romney and his PACmen spent over fifteen million dollars worth of smear ads against Newt Gingrich in Florida to seal the deal of beating him in the third primary. Romney was upbeat afterward, but many movement conservatives were not.
Jonah Goldberg: What is Wrong With This Guy? >
Congratulations to Mitt Romney for his big win last night. It was a win that, Romney supporters hoped, would help bury concerns about his ability to seal the deal to do what it takes. But I’m not so sure. If you’re a straight-laced grown-up with money to burn, burying Newt Gingrich shouldn’t be that hard. Romney talked about the economy, Newt about lunar statehood (which I favor!). Romney drowned Gingrich in negative ads and Gingrich supplied endless fodder for the accurate ones and plausibility for the inaccurate ones. Was that really the test of his political chops everyone is saying? As a bunch of us have been writing around here for a while, the under-emphasized dynamic in this race isn’t that Romney isn’t conservative enough (though that’s obviously a real concern out there) it’s that he’s simply not a good enough politician.
Jonah and many other conservatives are really pissed that Mitt on the next day said that he's ' not very concerned about the poor.' >
“I’m not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there,” Romney told CNN. “If it needs repair, I’ll fix it.
Oh, dear. That wasn't too bright. Bill O'Reilly was trying to downplay this flub on The Factor by saying the Democrats will seize on any single word by Mitt that they can take out of context to smear him. Nice try, Bill. It was a bonehead move. >
But great politicians on the morning after a big win, don’t force their supporters to go around defending the candidate from the charge that he doesn’t care about the poor. They just don’t.
You would think after all the rigorous training Mormons are known to subject their children to when it comes to speaking to large groups of people at a young age and then sending them out on two year conversion missions to hone their craft of convincing people to like them, Mitt is one big flop in that category. Unlike his father, who was legendary for his two years in European mission work, Romney just has a problem with connecting and he's making his base nervous.
A recent Pew Poll shows Mitt's unfavorable rating is up to 47% . I believe the GOP thought that having so many debates would give them a chance to constantly bash President Obama without supplying much substance other than lunar bases, hating the gay, electrocutions and building electric fences against Latinos, but what has happened is America is watching and the GOP is being hurt by the added attention. Many republicans really dislike Romney, but view him as the only one to able challenge Obama. I still am surprised by this poll since the country is suffering from the 2008 global financial meltdown. And before Florida's results were in the GOP elites were freaking out over Gingrich's rise and then his attacks of their anointed one.
I know many progressives are feeling very antsy right now with these GOP circus debates and primary days dominating the news cycles so I did a little research into how our base felt about our candidates to contrast the GOP contest at about the same time. Democratic voters were very pleased with the field of candidates that were running for election.
via Gallup Politics on 02/03/08 >
The new poll indicates that whatever the outcome, Democrats nationwide will be equally satisfied with their nominee. They show equal levels of enthusiasm for the prospects of Clinton and Obama each being on the ballot in November. In addition, they are no more likely to believe one of the candidates is more electable in the fall than the other.
Specifically:
Fifty-five percent of Democrats (including independents who lean to the Democratic Party) say they would vote for Obama "enthusiastically" in November were he the Democratic nominee; 53% say the same of Clinton.
Forty-five percent of Democrats think Clinton has the better chance of beating the Republican candidate for president in November; 43% choose Obama.
By contrast, Gallup finds more lopsided attitudes among Republicans -- working strongly in McCain's favor. Republicans are less enthusiastic about voting for each of the leading potential nominees than the Democrats are about theirs; however, McCain is the clear leader on this score over Romney. McCain also beats Romney handily in perceptions of which of the two has the better chance of winning in November.
In the Florida returns there is another troubling number that was revealed about Mitt and the rest of the current field. >
Another warning sign for Romney: Nearly 4 in 10 GOPers want someone else to run: And this also has to worry Romney and his team a bit, too: 38% of Florida Republican primary voters said they’d like to see someone else run for the GOP nomination, versus 58% who said they’re satisfied with the field. It’s a striking number, because these are Republicans who TURNED OUT and voted.
38% are hoping for a brokered convention I guess. Wow. Things are tough in this country and many on our side have been very disappointed, but if we elect a phony conservative like Romney at this point in time, the middle class may never, ever recover. GOP unrest is a good thing.

Cisco Live UK Day 4, Part 1: Social Media Listening Center
Now this is really cool. Have you been wondering why the social media activity for Cisco Live UK has been so quick, responsive, and high-quality? Well, today we're going to show you why. Peter was invited to step inside the Cisco Social Media Studio at Cisco Live UK, which is the social media nerve center for the event. It is here where they are creating "one of the most customer-aware events in the world." Peter met up with Kenny Lauer, Vice President, Digital Experience of the GEORGE P JOHNSON Experience Marketing Group (GPJ) which runs the Cisco listening center for Cisco Live UK. Kenny explained that the listening center is the hub where all of the online conversations that are happening relevant to the event are captured. These conversations are captured using special listening tools, such as Cisco's Social Miner, which search Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr for Cisco Live UK content. What's most impressive is the team doesn't just listen -- they react. If a conversation -- positive or negative -- is picked up and is addressable, the team does its best to follow-up. Whatever it is, they are reacting to it to give people a better experience for the attendees and delegates. They can go back in time, too. In the video you see they are researching conversations and Tweets from a day ago for analysis. This Social Media Studio creates a unique experience for each attendee, and it helps the Cisco teams manage the Cisco Live UK event! Want to get noticed by the Cisco ... Next Assassin's Creed Rumors and SW:TOR Too Gay? - Press Pause Daily
[LESS INFO] 8 VIEWS | ADDED 04:00:00 02/02/12
Some rumors about the next Assassin’s Creed and is Star Wars: The Old Republic too gay?
SHOW NOTES:
Story 1:
A new game in the Assassin’s Creed franchise is coming later this year, and there are already rumors about where the story will take place this time. The last game, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, closed the book on the story of original protagonist Altair as well as the last few games main character, Ezio Auditore. According to a story on the computerandvideogame.com website, the historical setting for the next game will take place during the American Revolution.
There are a few clues during the last couple of games that point in this direction, as well as a survey last year where, Ubisoft asked players where they would like to see the series go to next, and the American Revolution was one of the choices. The choice would be a very interesting one, as it would allow the player to interact with many historical people of the time. This could include George Washington, who is said to hold one of the game’s mysterious Pieces of Eden.
I know a lot of gamers are looking forward to the next installment of this series, and these rumors sound like it could be pretty awesome.
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/333754/assassins-creed-heads-to-american-revolution-rumour/
Story 2:
So Star Wars: The Old Republic has been out for a little over a month, and lots and lots of gamers are loving it. They really seem to like the freedom that BioWare have given them to play however they want to. And it’s that freedom that has the game under fire from a conservative religious website.
The Family Research Council have condemned the game for letting players have their characters get involved in same-sex relationships. According to them, it sends the wrong message to young people who might be playing the game, and say that BioWare should not allow the content in their game. This isn’t the first time that BioWare has allowed characters in their games to have same sex relationships. Gamers could do so in both the Mass Effect and Dragon Age games, so it’s hardly a suprise that the company would allow it here as well.
As for the Family Research Council, they are a conservative lobbying organization that have a long history of going after thing in pop culture that show the LGBT community in a positive light, especially when it comes to matters of same sex marriage.
In the end, I doubt that gamers will spend any time at all caring about what other people feel about their games, and how they choose to play them.

Foggy Florida Pileup Leaves One Girl Without Family, Country Or Health Insurance
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 00:00:27 02/02/12
On Saturday morning Lidiane Carmo woke up in Florida, where she was attending a church conference with her father, mother, and sister. Carmo was the youngest in her family, and they had traveled to Florida with her pastor father, her aunt, uncle and cousins as well as several other other church members.
On Sunday morning, Lidiane woke up in a Florida hospital with broken bones and internal injuries after the van they were traveling in was involved in Sunday's horrendous highway pileup on I-75 near Gainesville, Florida. Her father, mother, sister, uncle, aunt and cousin were killed. She is the sole survivor in her immediate family.
Lidiane's parents came to the United States from Brazil 12 years ago, bringing five-year old Letiticia and three-year old Lidiane with them. They had legal visas which have since expired.
Lidiane is now an orphan. She has no health insurance. She has no legal status to remain in this country. And she has no family beyond those remaining members of her father's church. She is the sole survivor.
If we had a DREAM Act in place, Lidiane could petition for citizenship here since she entered the country legally. But we don't, and because of Republicans' insane need to pander to bigots and racists, we're unlikely to see it without a completely different Congress.
I'm writing about Lidiane because she puts a very human face on what they're doing when they block the DREAM Act. I wonder if any of these crazy Republican candidates could gaze into her frightened, hurting eyes, and tell her she has to go back to a country she doesn't even know. I think they could, and that should concern us all.
Congress forced a clause into the Affordable Care Act which excluded undocumented immigrants from coverage. The exclusion wasn't simply from federal funds for subsidies. They are barred from purchasing insurance on the state-based exchanges and the national exchange. Barred. Even if they pay with their own funds. Barred.
Today a 15-year old child is in a hospital in Florida, suffering from severe injuries, bereft of her family, in Rick Scott's state. What will become of her?
Atlanta Journal-Constitution: >
As for Lidiane's status, one expert had reassurance for her friends and surviving relatives.
Charles Kuck, an Atlanta immigration attorney, told the AJC that Lidiane would not be deported because of a federal law granting special status to juveniles. Lidiane can become a ward of the state and be issued a green card, allowing her to stay, Kuck said.
"This child will be fine," Kuck said. "She's clearly an orphan at this moment."
But the Brazilian consulate was not as reassuring: >
At the church Tuesday night, a representative from the Brazilian Consulate in Atlanta addressed crash survivors and others in the congregation.
"I want to give you my love and our support," Ana Claudia Rodrigues, deputy consul general for the consulate, said through a translator.
But when crash victims asked about help, Rodrigues said she could only convey their concerns to the Brazilian government. Immigration issues are not up to the consulate, Rodrigues said, but the U.S. government.
"She didn't answer any of our questions," Weberson Barbosa, a crash survivor still on crutches, said Tuesday night. "We need someone to really view our pain and take action."
Lidiane's family, before the crash Yes, they really do. I wonder. Would Ron Paul tell this family to rely on charity? Would Mitt Romney tell this family to rely on charity? Would Newt Gingrich summon the neighborhood council to testify to Lidiane's character? Oh wait. She hasn't been here long enough.
Something is really broken in a country where a 15-year old child can suffer like this while politicians preach family values and American exceptionalism. Really broken.

President Obama Speaks Before a Cabinet Meeting
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 04:41:45 02/01/12
President Obama Speaks Before a Cabinet Meeting Transcript: Hello, everybody. This is our first Cabinet meeting after my State of the Union address, and it gives me an opportunity to share my ideas and initiatives with my Cabinet, but also to get some feedback from them. One of the top priorities that I mentioned during the State of the Union was the need for us to promote small business. And I’m very pleased that we’ve got Karen Mills here, who has participated in our meetings before, but is now an official member of the Cabinet. It is a symbol of how important it is for us to spur entrepreneurship, to help startups, to move aggressively so that we can assure more companies that create the most jobs in our economy are getting a leg up from the various programs that we have in our government. I mentioned at the State of the Union that there have been discussions, bipartisan discussions between Republicans and Democrats, about a whole set of measures that can accelerate financing to startup companies; can provide tax breaks to startups and small businesses that are interested in either hiring more workers or increasing their wages; that looks at innovative ways for them to raise capital. And my expectation and hope is, is that they will get a bill together quickly, that they will pass it and get it on my desk. I will sign it right away, and I would like to see that bill signed this year. In addition, we’ve got all the Cabinet agencies, who are here represented. They are putting forward their own initiatives to enhance the ability of entrepreneurs to get up and running. So, for example, the Department of Homeland Security, my understanding is we’re going to be talking about how we can improve the visa process for those who are interested in investing in the United States and starting businesses here in the United States. I know that the Department of Commerce, Energy, and Education, as well as the SBA, are all launching complementary initiatives to support entrepreneurship as well. And so what we want to do is to make sure that every single agency, even as they’re tending to their energy initiatives or providing homeland security or transportation or defense, that we’re also thinking about how are we advancing the cause of giving small businesses and entrepreneurs opportunities to start creating the next Google or the next Apple or the next innovative company that’s going to create jobs and improve our economy. It’s that kind of all-hands-on-deck approach that is really going to make a difference. And we’re looking forward to hearing additional ideas from our business council and from those who are involved in startups that can help to promote this agenda. So thank you all for participating. I’m looking forward to hearing your ideas, and I will see you guys later. Q Will we get details on your housing plan tomorrow? THE PRESIDENT: -- I will talk to you then about it. I wouldn’t want to use up all my good stuff now. (Laughter.) Q Thank you, sir.
