Good News/Bad News on New Unemployment Figures
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 21:00:09 12/02/11
Although it sounds like good news, I'd hold off on the cheering just yet : >
The American unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to its lowest level in two and a half years in November, despite the many global crises batting against the economy.
The unemployment rate fell to 8.6 percent, after having been stuck around 9 percent for most of 2011, the Labor Department said Friday . Additionally, a separate government survey found that the nation’s employers added 120,000 jobs last month, after adding 100,000 jobs in October.
So lower unemployment rate and slightly more jobs added this month. Good, right? Well.... >
The jobless rate fell partly because more workers got jobs, but also because about 315,000 workers dropped out of the labor force, and the jobless rate counts only people who are actively looking for work. Even so, the country still has a backlog of more than 13 million unemployed workers, whose periods of unemployment averaged an all-time high of 40.9 weeks.
“They say businesses are refusing to look at résumés from the unemployed,” said Esther Perry, 59, of Bedford, Mass., who participated in a recent report on unemployed workers put together by USAction, a liberal coalition. “What do you think my chances are? Once unemployment runs out, I don’t know what I will do.”
So now we're facing more chronically unemployed people who are simply falling off the rolls, never to be considered by a politician again. As Robert Borosage from Campaign for America's Future puts it: >
“This fragile growth now faces fierce headwinds, with austerity in Europe and Great Britain driving those economies into recession. The financial crisis in Europe will impact zombie banks in the United States.
“While it looks like that Congress finally may use small band aids to attempt to stop the economic bleeding like the payroll tax extension and extending unemployment benefits, they are not doing what is needed to push this economy back in to firing on all cylinders.”
“We need Congress and the Federal Reserve to act now to put people back to work. Use the opportunity posed by record low interest rates to rebuild our decrepit infrastructure. Provide young workers with jobs in urban corps and green corps and the non-profit sector. Provide aid to states and localities to avoid more devastating layoffs of teachers and cops.”

Elected Officials Attempt Living On Food Stamps
[LESS INFO] 5 VIEWS | ADDED 23:00:53 11/01/11
Jackie Spier is discovering how difficult it is to shop and buy food on just over $32.00 per week. She and seven other Congressional Democrats have taken the Food Stamp Challenge, where they commit to planning and buying food under the same limits as food stamp recipients. This year, more than others, it's a very big deal since Rep. Paul Ryan and his cohorts seem to think they can slash funding to the SNAP program and people will still be able to survive.
How are they doing so far? The Hill : >
“Day 2 of #foodstampchallenge so I can't drink Joe's coffee,” Lee tweeted Friday before her appearance on the MSNBC show "Morning Joe." “Had peanut butter and crackers for breakfast.”
Schakowsky has taken to Twitter, as well, seeking suggestions for nutritious meals under $1.50, the average limit per food stamp meal. She said she is also keeping a diary of everything she ate and will post it at week’s end.
Her followers tweeted suggestions ranging from wholegrain pasta and chickpeas to a peanut butter-and-banana sandwich.
Del. Donna Christensen (D-Virgin Islands) — who is also participating in the challenge — said she checked grocery store prices and found the challenge would be harder than expected.
“Ok this #foodstampchallenge is going to [be] really hard.,” Christensen tweeted Thursday. “Checked prices in Safeway and so easy to blow the whole week's allotment.”
Huffington Post: >
Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) along with eight other congressional Democrats are eating on a budget of about $4.50 a day to show solidarity with food stamp recipients who receive $32.59 a week.
The personal thrift, which is part of a challenge organized by Fighting Poverty With Faith, was reported by Pacifica Patch . The site also listed the food items that Speier was now buying. >
Speier displayed some of the items she was able to purchase for her first day of living on a food stamp budget: a bag of coffee and a loaf of bread from the Dollar Warehouse; a can of Campbell's low sodium chicken noodle soup; and a can of sweet peas, possibly to put in a tuna casserole later in the week."And this is my treat for the week," Speier said, holding up a box of microwave popcorn packets.
Rep. Joe Courtney (D-Conn.), along with his wife and daughter, chose to live on a food stamp budget of about $1.59 per meal. He tweeted about the challenge, relaying that he ate "generic cereal and part of a banana for breakfast."
Rep. Joe Courtney, via the Hartford Courant : >
Toward the end of Rep. Joe Courtney's week-long SNAP Challenge, during which he and his family — including wife, Audrey, and teenage daughter, Elizabeth —- lived on just over $32 a week apiece, the pickings were slim. For his last meal of the week, Courtney had leftover spaghetti with a little cheese sprinkled on the top.
So Thursday, the first day back on his regular diet, Courtney was acutely aware of the $4.25 bowl of chili he ordered from his Washington, D.C., cafeteria.
This effort is particularly poignant as I begin my annual task of picking through some FEC and IRS disclosures for different Republican organizations. Eric Cantor, for example, spent $365.00 on one meal in New York in September. That's one meal, equal to roughly ten times what SNAP recipients can spend in a week. On August 4th, he spent $370.00 in Washington DC for one meal. Those were not fundraisers. They were simply meals.
Eric Cantor has repeatedly voted to reduce SNAP allotments. Senator Jeff Sessions' PAC spent over $1,800 on meals in August. Not fundraisers. Meals. You may recall Sessions as the one who was so concerned over waste, fraud and abuse in the SNAP program that he wanted even more cuts to it along with assorted other hoops to jump through.
It's good to see some elected officials learning to live on what's allocated under SNAP. Unfortunately, it's not the ones who could really benefit from the learning experience, but at least some can testify.

For more CBSM content and downloads: check us out at www.youthgrouptruth.com .I told CBSM last night that if they didn’t understand or believe the topic we were going to talk about, they could not be saved! I told them that if this topic was not understood or believed on the mission field, then the people could not be saved. We here preaching on this in our churches usually no more than once a year. This is devastatingly sad since the majority of the Bible points to it, and it is absolutely necessary for saving faith and a spiritually growing life. What did we talk about? The resurrection of Jesus Christ! Do Christians, believers, or church members truly understand the necessity and the power of Jesus’ resurrection? His resurrection is the most important event of all time. Without the resurrection, Christmas (Jesus’ birth) and Good Friday (Jesus’ death) were failures! So here you go…my attempt at a biblical, theological, comprehendable, fun, and convicting sermon on the resurrection of Jesus to teenagers. ;

Bill Belichick Press Conference - 4/29/2011

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick addresses the media during his Draft press conference at Gillette Stadium on Friday, April 29, 2011. BB: It's a day of preparation all the way through just trying to go through the second and third round and take a look at the players and the teams and so forth, putting it all together. We had a number of conversations prior to the draft. We really felt like Ras-I Dowling was a good pick for us there. Big corner, good tackler, been in a good program there in Virginia with coach [Al] Groh and Mike London this past year. [He's] a guy that's played in a system pretty similar to what we've run. Very impressive kid. Then we had a little movement down there, took [Shane] Vereen and then traded back and ended up taking [Stevan] Ridley and [Ryan] Mallet. It seemed like there was some conversation on just about every pick. I can't really remember what all of it was, but again, in the end, we just felt like moving back and picking up the extra pick would enable us to make the Oakland trade, which was kind of ongoing. That's something that we've been talking about here for a little while with them that finally got consummated. Coming out of the draft with the five players that we have - a lineman and three skilled players on offense and a corner on defense - and a couple of high picks next year, I feel like we had a pretty decent couple days. And then we'll just go back tonight and try to take a look at what's left on the board and what we have left in the way of picks and keep plugging away and try to find players that can contribute or maybe we think develop on the football team. Still got a long way to go here, but this is where we are for right now. Q: What specifically drew you to Ryan Mallet? BB: We just felt like he was a good player. He's had a lot of production. He's won everywhere he's been: high school, college. He did a good job at Michigan. They came in and changed offenses and that was definitely beyond his control. I think h...

Paul Wolfowitz says Bush went 'too far' with Libya, blames Pan Am Flight 103 families for deal, and bashes American Right
[LESS INFO] 4 VIEWS | ADDED 18:00:06 02/28/11
Fareed Zakaria did something fascinating yesterday: He actually spent four minutes of his show teaching a little history. He explained how the Middle East was formed as a political bloc and how that led to what's happening there now. Can you imagine learning something on cable TV?
The pretext for the lesson was that he was interviewing Paul Wolfowitz, one of the architects of the Iraq War. Predictably, Wolfowitz attacked the Obama administration over its handling of the Libya uprising, but I was kind of surprised to see Wofly bash the Bush administration as well for making a deal with Libya when Bush took them off the terrorist list -- but in doing so, he ascribed blame to the families of the tragic Pan Am Flight 103 bombing. Of course, Wolfowitz has no actual proof that they put pressure on Bush.
Fareed Zakaria GPS: >
ZAKARIA: You were in the administration that have - that normalized relations with Libya. It is the Bush administration that brought him in from the cold - from the cold. Were you opposed to that decision?
WOLFOWITZ: Look, I think we needed to give some acknowledgement to the fact that he handed over his nuclear weapons program. But it was an illegal program, and I thought we were giving him a lot by in effect saying you wouldn't suffer the fate of Saddam Hussein. I don't think we had to go nearly as far as we went.
There was a lot of pressure from Pan-Am 103 families because they wanted to collect the money that Gadhafi was offered. I -
ZAKARIA: Do you think that's really -
WOLFOWITZ: At one point, I believed - well, I was being told that the pressure was - I believe it was significant. I can't prove it. The United States went ahead and restored full diplomatic relations and had the Secretary of State visit.
I think we have should have drawn more of a line. Some move was appropriate. I think we went too far, and I think the Obama administration continued that.
The man who heaped spoons full of love towards attacking Iraq is shoveling garbage on shattered families of the Flight 103 nightmare. A real class act.
From 2008: Libya pays $1.5 billion to settle terrorism claims >
Libya has paid $1.5 billion to the families of terrorism victims, overcoming the final obstacle to full relations with the United States, the State Department said Friday. The payment ends Tripoli's legal liability in U.S. terror cases and paves the way for increased U.S. involvement in the oil-rich nation. President Bush signed an executive order Friday restoring Libyan immunity from terrorism-related lawsuits and dismissing pending cases over compensation as part of a deal reached this summer.
David Welch, the top U.S. diplomat for the Middle East, who negotiated the agreement, called Libya's rehabilitation from a terrorist nation to a U.S. ally "historic." The pact closes the book on a contentious period in U.S.-Libyan relations, which began in the 1980s with a series of attacks involving the two countries, including the bombings of Pan Am flight 103, a German disco and U.S. airstrikes over Libya .
U.S. business executives hope the new relationship will lead to billions of dollars of new investment in Libya, a country rich in petroleum reserves but lacking a developed infrastructure.
Wolfowitz attacked many people in this interview, including the American Right generally -- for, as Zakaria puts it, losing sight of the importance of the importance of democracy. That means you, Rush Limbaugh! >
ZAKARIA: What about the American right? Is it - has it become so fearful of some kind of radical Islam that it is losing sight of the importance of the importance of democracy, in your view?
WOLFOWITZ: Look, I - I think there's too much attempt to put foreign policy views in - in right/left terms. The view that I would like to associate with is the one I think of as Harry Truman and John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, who believed that support for freedom, support for democracy is not only something that is morally important for the United States but equally is strategically important, and a freer, more democratic world is good for us.
ZAKARIA: But - but the people who are arguing against it on the right are saying we are looking at what's going on inside these societies and they're going to end up being - becoming radical Islamic societies, and that's why we - we oppose them.
WOLFOWITZ: Look, there's a - there's a dangerous argument, I think, that almost says if - if you're a Muslim and you're not an extremist, then you're not a good Muslim, and it's coming from people who aren't Muslims at all. What I know is that there are 200 million Muslims in the Indonesia country that I know very - I - it's an exaggerated - it's a complicated country, but I know a lot about it. Most of those 200 million Muslims are very tolerant people. They liked nothing better than to live in a country that's like the United States.
We certainly shouldn't say, oh, anyone who is of that faith is a problem. And they are our best allies.
I'm sure very soon Wolfowitz will be going on RushBo's show to bow down, kiss the ring and beg for forgiveness from the Holy One.

Paladinette Introduces “Jobless Talk Rant” to 99er Nation
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 17:12:37 01/08/11
Yesterday, Paladinette Introduced “Jobless Talk Rant” to the 99er Nation. Jobless Talk Rant is a YouTube version of the opening remarks of her BlogTalk Radio Show, which airs Fridays at noon Pacific called Jobless Talk.
Jobless Talk was the first BlogTalk Show dedicated exclusively to “the stories of the unemployed, benefit extensions, Washington inaction to help the jobless millions, the out of control US unemployment rate and what Congress is not doing to help the 99er Nation.”
The 99er’s Rant can be found on ThePaladinette’s YouTube Channel http://www.youtube.com/user/ThePaladinette?feature=mhum and her show is even available free on I-Tunes. As She put it in yesterday’s show “I am even on Itunes Isn’t that a HOOT! Itunes.apple.com/bw/podcast/paladinette-blog-talk.../id373134073 free Podcast downloads you can schedule to automatically go into your I-TUNES PodCast Library!”
Yesterday’s Jobless Talk Show was the first of the New Year and came after a two week Holiday hiatus, since December 17, 2010.
This first installment of the Jobless Talk Rant comes in 2 parts (seen below) and is focused upon stirring the 99er Nation out of their apathetic and often self-deprecation lethargy after the long, unfruitful Tier 5 fight in 2010.
> “Actually I am trying to stir up 99ers from their sadness and Depression. What is happening to the 99er Nation is SHAMEFUL - but the shame is on Washington NOT the 99ers. Whether or not you agree with everything I write or opine that makes no difference to me - what matters is that I/We can agree to disagree and still stand in brother/sisterhood rising up to take our rightful place and demand what we have a right for - SURVIVAL! VIVA la 99er Nation, Arise and stand proud of what you have come through with NO HELP from Washington - only us helping each other!” Yesterday’s episode of Jobless Talk was the first of the new 2 hour format and was full of inspiring ideas, personal stories and poignant - In Your Face Style Paladinette is well known for employing.
> “Honestly I am not here to molly coddle anyone. I cannot and likely will NEVER understand anyone in our situation NOT being thrilled over the good fortune bestowed upon another down and out American. Some folks were actually pissed off at me at the end of last year because I found a benefactor to keep this show on the air. Now I will never understand not being absolutely THRILLED over the blessings God bestows on a fellow human being struggling to survive. Do not allow anyone to make you feel less than INCLUDING yourself.”
One of the most important suggestions she makes during this diatribe of a 99er Wake Up Call is to STOP fighting amongst themselves and remember everyone is human, makes mistakes and does their utmost best to lead the 99er Nation to what they need from Washington, in the form of more UI benefits NOW and a robust Jobs bill very soon.
One of the “Key STRATEGIES” she lays out in both her show and yesterday’s rant is:
> All of you need to:
GET over to U-Cubed [ http://www.unionofunemployed.com ] and sign up it is free and Rick Sloan who runs it is so smart about Washington and how it works. He has a long history and background in advocating for working class America with his involvement in IAM union. This man is so smart and U-Cubed will be a mover and shaker this year in the 99ers fight. How many people are represented in the 99ers union group what 20,000 or more? > I say stay with the 99ers union thing but also Get on U-Cubed now, today. When you get there, send me a friend request Paladinette . We need an army of folks fed up enough to take this fight to victory. I assure you that 20K people - ready to fight for survival of the 99ers under the leadership of Rick Sloan will make a HUGE difference and expedite the reward of our efforts. > So - spread the word. Get the word out to all the groups, blogs social networks, FB pages, radio shows, unemployed friends, pass out flyers if that is they only way you can help. Tell your friends and family to join you in this fight. It will help educate them, inspire you and positive energy attracts like energy. The power of like-minded people coming together for a good cause simply has to spawn something good.
The time to hide in your homes behind your computers is transcending into a call for more visible involvement. Hold your elected officials accountable. They put us in this mess and I for one intend to be politely in their face until we get what the 99er Nation needs to survive and eventually thrive. We will not be ignored any longer.
So I ask you How bad do you want to survive? Do you want it bad enough to pitch in and leave comfortable and apathy AND your ego at the door? Well now is the time and today is the day!
>
I will NOT GIVE UP OR GIVE IN! Nor will I stop trying new things that have the potential to effect the CHANGE necessary to help the 99ers - What you think of me personally is really none of my business. RATHER It is what we can accomplish together that is important the rest is distractions and immaterial crap!
SO I ASK You all out there in Unemployed America once AGAIN
Who is with me?

Bill Belichick Press Conference - 12/31/2010

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick addresses the media during his press conference at Gillette Stadium on Friday, December 31, 2010. BB: An early Happy New Year to everybody. Hope the holidays have been good. Q: Can we expect a drop kick this weekend? If so, who would be the person to do that? BB: That's a good question. Maybe we will have tryouts this afternoon and see who can drop kick. I don't know if we have too many people that can drop kick. Doug [Flutie] was a real exception to that. He would get out there and bang them threw and after a while you didn't really think much of it. I haven't seen anybody do that in a while on the football field. Q: You don't practice it? BB: Sometimes you see guys fooling around. Doug would stand out there before practice and after practice and hit a couple. It would look pretty good and I would think, %lsquoMaybe he can do that,' but I haven't seen any of that. [Watching] offensive lineman or whoever throwing the ball around sometimes you just notice that. Or watching a guy punt or kick or something you say, %lsquoDid he do that at some other point in his career or whatever?' I can't say that I've seen any drop kicks since Doug. After Doug did it, a few guys within the next couple weeks would say, %lsquoOh I can do that.' Q: You have had a number of successful years in the last decade or so. How important is it to maintain momentum with the bye week coming up? BB: I don't know. I don't know. Each year is different and every game is different. We'll worry about the rest of the year when we get to the rest of the year, but right now we are just worried about this week. Q: I know you do what's in the best interest of the football team all the time, so how do you get to that spot? What do you evaluate to get there? BB: Well, part of it is individual players. Each individual player's situation is different: how long they play, what their health is, what they need, what the team needs, what our opponent is doing, what we ...

Tom Brady Press Conference - 12/31/2010

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady addresses the media during his press conference at Gillette Stadium on Friday, December 31, 2010. Q: Can you talk about the year you've had and making the Pro Bowl and do you evaluate it at the end of the season? TB: I mean, I think the only thing I really think about is what we have to do this week. This season, I think we put ourselves in a good position and I think it would be great to finish it off the right way this week - go out there and play a real good game against a team that we've split with the last few years. So, I don't get into all the personal evaluation or anything like that. I think that's really a waste of time for me [and] probably all of my teammates, too. Q: Can you evaluate Brian Hoyer a little bit and how far have you seen him come from last year? TB: Brian is a great player, even though he's a Michigan State kid. Q: Tough for you to say that? TB: It is. He's really come a long way. I think for any quarterback, really, that first to second year is a big jump. He's really a smart kid that's got all the physical skills. He just needs the opportunity. We always talk about [the fact] that you never know when you're going to get that opportunity because at quarterback, it's one play. And then you go in there and you seize the opportunity. He's done everything the coaches have asked for. Obviously they have a lot of confidence in him; he was the backup last year. I think the whole team has a lot of confidence in Brian. Q: How do you deal with your backups? Do you consider yourself almost a tutor or a mentor? Do you take time to really deal with them on a one-to-one basis? TB: Well, I think you provide a good example. I think that's what you try to do best as a veteran player for any young player. You try to lead by example and well-done is always better than well said. I always think you should go out there and do the right thing and you hope that the younger players see that and take a liking to it. I mean, e...

Bill Belichick Press Conference - 12/24/2010

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick addresses the media during his press conference at Gillette Stadium on Friday, December 24, 2010. BB: Did you get your Christmas shopping done? I just finished up mine this morning. You've still got some time. Q: What did you get me? BB: It's in the mail. So how are we doing, ready for Buffalo? Q: The question is, are you? BB: [We're] getting there, we still have got a little more time that we need today. [We] definitely need today to wrap up a lot of the situational stuff and try to pull it together but hopefully. Q: [The Buffalo Bills] special teams unit has always been very good, is it still as good this year? BB: Absolutely. They've got two outstanding returners, I mean, [C.J.] Spiller's been giving them a big lift and obviously you saw what he did against us. He missed a couple games in the middle of the season there and [Leodis] McKelvin did a great job too. [Terrence] McGee, we all know what he can do so it doesn't really matter who they put back there. The kickers are good. They've got good coverage units. I know [George] Wilson kind of leads the charge on that. They've got a lot of good guys. Yeah, they are solid and I think that's one of the most solid areas of their team. Q: Yesterday a fan asked about Rob Gronkowski and whether his style of play might compare to Mark Bavaro's. How would you compare and contrast those two guys? BB: There are some similarities. Q: How so? BB: Size, blocking, receiving. They have a little bit of the same body type and playing style. I think there are some similarities. Q: Athletically would you give Gronkowski maybe a little bit of an edge there? BB: I don't know. Mark [Bavaro] is pretty athletic. I'd say they are similar. Q: Related to that, Tedy Bruschi joked earlier in the year about you still looking for the next Mark Bavaro. Do you kind of feel that you have found the next Mark Bavaro or do with the tight ends here have that ideal combination of good hands, good size and...

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady addresses the media during his press conference at Gillette Stadium on Friday, December 24, 2010. TB: Hi guys. Sorry to bring you guys in here on a Christmas Eve. Q: (On how he's feeling) TB: Doing good. Doing good. Ready for this game. Ready for Santa Claus and then ready to play some football. Q: How would you describe what you got hit with illness-wise? TB: Probably what a lot of guys are getting hit with lately. It's just going around town. But I'm feeling good. Good day of practice yesterday. Have to go out and have a good day today, get sharpened up and get ready to go play for a division title. Q: How much does it affect your ability to prepare? TB: None. None. Q: It wasn't like that AFC Championship game a couple years back when you were on your death bed? TB: No. I wasn't quite on my death bed that day either. No it wasn't anything like that. Just the normal flu. Q: When you aren't at practice, are you getting treatment, watching film? TB: Everything. All that stuff: treatment, film, still getting prepared, finding different things to do other than run around. You still use the time to prepare, certainly [to] get caught up on some other things that maybe you don't get a chance to do when you're out there practicing. It's maybe a little more rehab, stuff like that. Q: Is the turnover streak a self-fulfilling prophecy almost because everyone is so focused on not being the person to break the streak? TB: We always talk about not turning the ball over. I think we've been very fortunate - I certainly have been a couple of times - over the last few weeks. The guys who are a carrying the ball in these conditions in the winter time, when it's snowy... In Chicago, that was pretty cool not to turn it over on a day like that. As the weather gets cooler the ball gets a little harder to handle. The teams that really play well in this type of weather don't turn it over. So it's definitely a point of emphasis this week as well. ...

The Tea Party Nation's War On Christian Churches
[LESS INFO] 4 VIEWS | ADDED 18:00:09 12/21/10
Clearly, Tea Party Nation's Judson Phillips has his own ideas about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. I didn't realize that when the teabaggers held up signs saying "We want our country back", they meant back to 1790. Explain to me why African-Americans want to be part of this group? It's not like that era worked out well for them.
But now that the tea party groups have made inroads into Congress and have the Republican Party kowtowing to them, Phillips has a new target for the Tea Party Nation. In this time when we remember the birth of Christ, Phillips is going after the Methodist Church for their "socialistic" leanings. No, I'm not kidding. >
Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips has a dream: "No more Methodist Church."
A blog post on his Tea Party Nation page says that on Friday he walked by the United Methodist Building in Washington D.C., which had a sign that said, "Pass the DREAM Act." Phillips wrote: " I have a DREAM. That is, no more United Methodist Church."
Phillips explains that he was formerly a member of the church, but he left because it's "the first Church of Karl Marx," and "little more than the "religious" arm of socialism."
"The Methodist church is pro-illegal immigration," he continues. "They have been in the bag for socialist health care, going as far as sending out emails to their membership "debunking" the myths of Obamacare. Say, where are the liberal complaints on the separation of church and state?"
"In short, if you hate America, you have a great future in the Methodist church," he says.
Lord, protect us from your idiot followers. To say that he's obviously unfamiliar with the Constitution to subvert the First Amendment in that way would be kind. But he's also very, very unfamiliar with the teachings of Christ himself to find the teachings of the Methodist Church to be religious socialism. Seriously, dude?
In one of the proofs of His divinity, Jesus multiplied loaves and fishes to feed everyone, spreading his wealth to all, without regard to their ability to pay. He healed the sick (our first universal health care plan!) and railed against the money changers and advised the wealthy that their material status in this world gave them no guaranteed access to the next . >
Jesus spoke remarkably often about wealth and poverty. To the poor he said, "Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God," (Luke's version). To the rich he said, "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth," and "go, sell what you have, and give to the poor." When the rich turned away from him because they couldn't follow his command he observed, "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
For Jesus, helping the poor and the outcast is not optional: it is the essence of what it means to love God. In the parable of the last judgement he welcomes the righteous into heaven saying, "I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me." When the righteous answered that they didn't recall doing any of these things, he said, "as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me."
We are to "forgive our debtors" and "give to every one who begs from you." But don't handouts contribute to moral decay? Jesus was more concerned about the moral decay in those who are so attached to their wealth that they would hoard it for themselves. In our better moments most of us recognize that giving does not corrupt. We sacrifice to give good things to our children and do our best to provide them with years of carefree existence as they grow up. We do this to give them a sense of security and a foundation for growth. People who have been devastated by misfortune, or for whatever reason are down and out, may need even more help because they may not have what it takes to recover on their own. Many of us will help a friend in hard times, even though we know we will never be repaid. It is when dealing distantly with people in the abstract that we fall back on the "moral decay" argument.
Frankly, I think the Methodist Church is probably better off with Judson Phillips out of their flock. His understanding of Christianity is sadly wanting.
