Drive it!: The Motor Magazine
[LESS INFO] 7 VIEWS | ADDED 00:30:00 02/08/12
This edition of Drive it! takes us to the automotive past, present and future. There’s the new Audi A4, and a review of BMW’s electric concept cars. We also pay a nostalgic visit to the original VW Bug and its revamped successor, the New Beetle. Plus a report on a car that can influence the outcome of Formula 1 races despite not competing.Present it! Audi A4Now in its 8th generation, the A4 has become Audi’s best-selling model. In almost 40 years, Audi has sold almost 10 million units of the A4 and its predecessor the Audi 80. Now the carmaker presents a massively revamped A4 series. The design is even bolder. The horizontal lines at the front are more pronounced, and the bulge in the hood is more prominent. The revamped engines are said to consume up to 11% less fuel. Together, the sedan and Avant wagon models offer a choice of six TDI and four diesel versions. Drive it! tests the new A4 sedan powered by a 2.0-liter TFSI engine.Compare it! The Seat Alhambra and Ford GalaxyThe two MPVs share a common history. The first generation of the people-carrier in 1995 was ultimately a joint production from Ford, Seat and Volkswagen. Although the collaboration ended three years later, with Ford developing the second generation of the Galaxy on its own, the basic structure of the carmakers' models remained virtually identical until 2006. The second generation of the Seat Alhambra has been on the market since 2010. Drive it! takes a closer look at the most powerful diesel versions of the two models. The Alhambra delivers 125 kW of power, the Galaxy delivers 147 kW. So what other differences are there between the close cousins? Picture it! The BMW i3 and i8The two concepts are intended to give us a glimpse of the automotive future. The i3 concept is set to be BMW’s first mass-produced fully electric car, and has been designed with tomorrow’s urban traffic already in mind. The BMW i8 concept is a plug-in hybrid that embodies the vision of a modern, sustainable sports car. The i8 combines the modified electric engine from the i3 (front axle) with a 164 kW/300 Nm three-cylinder high-performance gasoline engine (rear axle). The dynamic duo are due out in late 2012 or early 2013. Test it! The VW BeetleThe New Beetle constitutes a difficult challenge for Volkswagen. The new generation aims to capture some of the magic of the Bug-original. That didn’t really work out in the 1998 incarnation of the New Beetle, which was never accepted by Bug fans as a worthy successor. The latest attempt from VW is a modern car determined to convey that genuine Bug feel. Constantin Beims asked Bug connoisseurs what they make of the New Beetle.Admire it! The Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Formula 1 Safety CarA non-competing vehicle that can determine the outcome of a race.Huge leads can be whittled down and entire race strategies destroyed. But safety has to have top priority. Safety Cars in Formula 1 debuted at the 1973 Canadian Grand Prix, and since 1996 have been provided by Mercedes’ works tuner AMG. The cars’ mission: to take the danger out of hazardous situations. The SLS AMG will again be heading the field occasionally this season. Drive it! meets Bernd Mayländer, who’s been at the wheel of the safety car for 12 years. He shows us the special features that make the SLS AMG Safety Car so unique.

Les Jupes - "One Solemn Oath": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
Les Jupes are a new band from the centre of Canada versed in expansive musical landscapes, sharp lyrics and an observer's eye for the world. They are four Anglos with a French name making big, broad and determined music. And they are at the centre of a prairie renaissance growing around Head In The Sand Records. Their debut album Modern Myths is built on Michael Petkau Falk's baritone charging through waves of psychedelia and driving rhythms. Pounding, introspective, at times fierce, at times playful. It is purposefully dyslexic - an echo of the characters entombed and a mirror of the writer. Having moved to Montreal and quitting music in 2005, this album culminates the creative turnaround of "the patron saint of the Winnipeg music scene" (Jaxon Haldane) - a process which also brought us the Record Of The Week Club in 2009. Modern Myths was recorded over a year and a half when Montreal producer/engineer Marcus Paquin (frontman of Last Gang's Silver Starling) found time from working on Arcade Fire's The Suburbs. Marcus and Mike have that rare magic found in friends who share similar musical visions. The process of recording Modern Myths also brought turnover - one version of Les Jupes slowly dissipated and another has come to take its place. David Schellenberg (The Playing Cards), Adam Klassen and Kelly Beaton (All Of Your Friends) have brought new passion and skill to this song cycle and anticipation for next wave of songs. For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me New research has exposed the ten most powerful business people in China. Known for wearing black suits and driving black cars, they are called the "Black Collars." They control a large part of the nation's economy and have substantial political influence. In Chinese they are called the "Black Collars"%mdasha group of elite business people who control large parts of the Chinese economy. Britain's Daily Mail recently published a list of ten "Black Collars," citing research by the Brookings Institute, specialist China publications and the Sunday Times. The list includes the former head of the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China and now appointed governor of Hebei Province, Zhang Qingwei. Also Wang Jianzhou, chairman of China Mobile, the world's biggest mobile phone network, with 650 million users. Critics say the company makes much of its profit through charges that would be illegal in other countries. And Zhang Guoqing, the general manager of China North Industries Group%mdashChina's largest arms maker. The company has been subject to sanctions for suspected missile sales to Iran and weapons sales to Libya's Colonel Gaddafi. What these "Black Collars" have in common is that they all hold high positions in the business world and in the Chinese Communist Party. Many are provincial governors as well as executives in China's often state-owned businesses. [Caoan Jushi ... From: NTDTV Views: 162 6 ratings Time: 02:27 More in People & Blogs

Treasure hunter finds $3B WWII wreck and Polo Club Founder Adopts Girlfriend
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 11:27:07 02/02/12
Welcome to CRWE Newswire News Update, I'm Christina Collins. A treasure hunter said he has found the wreck of a British merchant ship torpedoed by a German U-boat off Cape Cod during World War II while carrying what he claims was a load of platinum bars now worth more than $3 billion. Should his claim prove to be true, it could be one of the richest sunken treasures ever discovered. An attorney for the British government doubts the vessel was carrying platinum, and if it was laden with precious metals, who owns the hoard could become a matter of international dispute. Treasure hunter Greg Brooks of Sub Sea Research in Gorham, Maine, announced that a wreck found sitting in 700 feet of water 50 miles offshore is that of the S.S. Port Nicholson, sunk in 1942. A Florida polo club founder has adopted his longtime adult girlfriend in what attorneys believe may be a legal maneuver to protect his financial assets as he faces a trial for a drunk driving incident that killed a 23-year-old. John Goodman, formally adopted Heather Laruso Hutchins in October 2011. The couple started dating in 2009. Goodman is the founder of the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, Fla. Judge Glenn Kelley wrote in a court order that the Defendant has effectively diverted a significant portion of the assets of the children's trust to a person with whom he is intimately involved at a time when his personal assets are largely at risk in this case. Goodman is being sued by Lili and William Wilson for the wrongful death of their son Scott Patrick Wilson, who died in a car crash on Feb. 12, 2010. Goodman ran a stop sign and slammed into Wilson's car. Goodman did not call police or an ambulance, but left the crash scene on foot, it was determined that Goodman's blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit. The new Opel Ampera has finally delivered what most e-cars have been promising for years - electric power for everyday use. It comes with a price tag, though. For the more economically minded we pit five small family cars against each other. The new BMW 1 Series takes on the VW Golf and other members of the compact segment. And finally a bit of sporty elegance: the Porsche Boxster Spyder.Present it! Opel AmperaWith the Ampera Opel is setting new standards for electric vehicles in everyday use. Its specially designed lithium-ion battery provides energy for the 111 kW electromotor. Depending on driving style, road profile and outside temperature, the fully charged battery will take the car distances between 40 and 80 kilometers on battery power alone - which is still unusual in the e-mobility segment.A classical gasoline combustion engine helps extend the range to up to 500 kilometers. But since the batteries recharge in around four hours, the Ampera can master most inner-city stretches in ultra-quiet electric mode. Compare it! BMW 1-Series - VW Golf - Audi A3 - Ford Focus - Alfa Romeo GiuliettaThe compact class is considered one of the most competitive automobile segments of the German market. Every revamped model, every next generation issue raises the question of who is leading the pack? The newcomer in our contest is the 5-door BMW 1 Series. It represents the second generation compact from the Bavarian carmaker. But will the 1 Series take first place? Four other candidates with diesel engines with around 103 kW power have their eye on the prize. We compare the BMW 118d to the Ford Focus, Alfa Romeo's Giulietta, the Audi A3 Sportback and the VW Golf. Taste it! Mercedes C-Class 350 BlueEfficiency SedanThe C-Class is one of Mercedes-Benz' most successful models. Over 8.5 million have been sold since it was introduced back in 1982, as the Mercedes 190. Drive it! took a look at the version with the most powerful gasoline engine - the C 350 BlueEfficiency sedan. While the C-Class has a high price tag and looks a bit old school, its performance proved to be anything but.Examine it! Roof Boxes - Packing and Travelling SafelyWhen families go on vacation the trunk is usually jam-packed. Many drivers invest in a roof box to give them extra storage space. But is driving with this extra load on the roof really safe?Together with the DEKRA technical testing service, we conducted tests on a compact car and an SUV to see how they handled - with and without roof boxes. An expert from DEKRA shows us why it's vital to reduce your speed when travelling with a fully-packed roof box. Test it! Porsche Boxster SpyderThe Porsche Boxster Spyder is the diva of the Boxster family. Straight off, the mid-engine roadster looks different from the others; it was mainly designed as an open-top, fair weather car. The fabric soft-top really just serves as a sun shade or repels a few drops of rain. The Spyder is significantly lighter than the Boxster S and has a lower center of gravity. It also has a very stiff transmission which makes the Boxster Spyder's driving performance as sporty as its looks.

Following is the note from Wayne Knapp about extracting drivers out of your recovery image:
"It sounds a little scary but it works well and you can always restore to the factory image if something goes wrong. This gives one the maybe the cleanest possible starting point. I recently was able to upgrade a Dell 2320 all in one touch screen computer to Windows 8 using the above approach. I was able to reinstall all the correct drivers in about 10 minutes after the Windows 8 install was complete.
1) Open up an administrator command prompt.
2) Create a directory to create a copy of the expanded restore image, say "c:\backupImage".
3) Expand the factory image with dism.exe. This is scary looking but docmented in MSDN. In my example:
" dism /mount-win /wimfile:d:\DELL\Image\Factory.wim /index:1 /mountDir:c:\backupImage "
This command will take a few minutes to run.
4) Copy the c:\backupImage\windows\system32\DriverStore directory to the recovery partition, say d:\DriverStore.
5) Now reinstall a clean version of Windows on the C:\ drive, leaving the restore partition alone!
6) Fix the drivers by using the device manager and browsing to the D:\driverstore for the drivers.
7) Enjoy your fast and very clean system!"

Arkansas Woman, 73, Forced to Attempt Bank Robbery and Michelle Obama's Transition Stages as First Lady

Welcome to CRWENewswire News Update, I'm Christina Collins. Todays News Update: Arkansas Woman, 73, Forced to Attempt Bank Robbery and Michelle Obama's Transition Stages as First Lady The search began Monday for man suspected of holding a 73-year-old woman and her husband hostage at their home, then forcing her to attempt to rob a bank with what she thought was a bomb strapped to her ankle. Mrs. Betty Davis told employees at the bank in Fayetteville about the device, and authorities were able to safely evacuate the building before a bomb squad removed it from Davis' leg. Davis told police that a man, the couple could only vaguely describe as a white male of an indeterminate age had been holding her and her husband captive in their Washington County home. Sheriff's deputies dispatched there found her husband tied up but unharmed. The couple's pickup truck was missing, but sheriff's deputies found an abandoned truck believed to be the couple's. Washington County sheriff's Lt. Emily Augustine said Monday night that investigators believe the couple's story as the evidence they have supports the witness statements so far. According to a new book by New York Times correspondent Jodi Kantor titled "The Obamas," scheduled to hit stores on Tuesday, claims of Michelle Obama wanting to stay in Chicago with their children and not move to the White House after her husband's historic win in the 2008 presidential race are revealed. The book describes Obama as alone, frightened with uncertainty of what to do next during her first days as First Lady. She worried about her children running into White House tourists during play dates and said that sometimes it becomes difficult to live in what we call a bubble. Mrs. Obama's trip to London in 2009 when she visited with young girls found then that she was having an epiphany, truly understanding for the first time through the eyes of those admiring girls what it meant to be first lady realizing the responsibility and the impact and potential of her role. An advisor told Kantor that everyone was waiting for a black woman to make a mistake. However Mrs. Obama moved past that and took on the fight against childhood obesity while becoming a defender of her husband's drive to reform health care. Former aides say eventually, Mrs. Obama came to not only embrace, but love her role as first lady.
