The Bain of Our Existence
[LESS INFO] 8 VIEWS | ADDED 01:00:28 05/24/12
I love this Bain debate. It is exactly the kind of debate about the nature of business and job creation we need to be having in this campaign. The Republicans, along with pro-Wall Street Democrats, are squealing like stuck pigs about the Obama campaign “attacking free enterprise” because they want to change the subject fast. They are saying to themselves: please, let’s talk about anything else. Deficits would be their first choice, but anything would be preferable. Maybe we’ll see them start talking about contraceptives and how people shouldn’t have sex again just to change the subject. Because this debate goes straight to the heart of what kind of economy we should be trying to build in this country.
This is isn’t about being for or against free enterprise. This is about how the economy should work better for everyone in it, not just the top 1 percent. The Republicans -- and Democrats like Cory Booker and Harold Ford, who both have raised millions of dollars in Wall Street money ( including money from Bain ) for their campaigns -- say that it is great when financial corporations like Bain make money by loading up the companies they buy with debt, taking all the tax write-offs the law allows, and then walking away with tons of money whatever happens to the original company. In fact, the companies Bain bought frequently went bankrupt, and Bain usually profited when those companies did go belly-up because of tax write-offs and sucking the companies’ assets dry. But in this line of reasoning, it’s all good, because capitalism should be unrestrained and some people got very rich.
What Obama and other Democrats are arguing is that our government should be on the side of the businesses that create not just wealth for a few at the top, but jobs and incomes for a lot of people. That is why Obama made the incredibly gutsy move to save the American auto industry, a policy that saved 1.45 million jobs in the short run, and kept desperately needed manufacturing jobs in this country for years to come. It is why Obama has made big investments in the budget for Small Business Administration jobs. It is why investments have been made in clean energy jobs of the future. It is why the U.S. Department of Agriculture has emphasized rural economic development and small business development in areas where jobs and incomes are desperately needed.
Democratic policies are in fact far more pro-business than policies like the Romney-Ryan budget, which independent studies estimate would cost the nation more than 4 million jobs in the next two years. That’s a lot of business customers who no longer have money to spend.
The Republican attack machine (helped by Democrats like Booker and Ford who have been feeding at the Wall Street trough for their entire careers) wants to intimidate the Obama campaign by making the claim that any attack on greedy business practices like the ones Romney perfected at Bain is an attack on all business and the market. It’s the same kind of argument Republicans make when they complain about class warfare politics when Democrats suggest that millionaires ought to pay a little more in taxes. It is an utterly soulless, amoral argument. But this is a fight Democrats can and will win if we make our case, because I think most people understand that there are ethical and unethical business practices. And they get that there is a difference between making money by manipulating the tax code and squeezing all the value out of businesses before throwing them away, and making money by making and selling good products that people want to buy. Biden laid this case out beautifully in a speech in Youngstown:
And the President got it right when he said “when you are President, as opposed to the head of a private equity firm, then your job is not simply to maximize profits. Your job is to figure out how everybody in the country has a fair shot.”
This debate about Bain Capital is one we need to have. What kind of business activity, and what kind of government policy, is better for America? Republicans, you better batten down the hatches, because we are going to have this debate. Whiny Wall Street Democrats, get over it, this is a fight we are taking on. This is a make or break moment for America’s middle class, and we aren’t going to let Republican bullies and Wall Street Democrat whiners from making Bain the bain of Romney’s existence.

www.euronews.com The European enlargement project remains unfinished as long as the Balkan jigsaw has missing pieces, of which Serbia is one. Near the end of the queue of aspirants until recently, Belgrade's arrest of indicted war criminals has improved Serbia's image. But the country remains a difficult fit for people like Lucille. She asked U-talk: "We know that Serbia is an official candidate for EU membership, but what are its chances of joining?" The European Commission's Peter Stano, who handles Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, replied: "Serbia, as every other candidate country, has a chance of course, even a perspective to enter the EU once all the conditions and obligations are met. "Serbia was granted a candidate status on the 1st of March which was a very important step in recognition of all the reform efforts Serbia was doing until now, but now after getting candidate status actually the really hard work begins because you need not only to carry on with the reform efforts, but step them up, in order to be able to open the negotiations on the accession which is basically the next logical step. "Only afterwards, when you start to negotiate, can you basically speak about a country entering the European Union, which is a process that takes a lot of time. "So instead of focusing on time frames and saying a date by which Serbia could enter the EU, I would say, Serbia can enter the EU as soon as all the obligations and criteria for the membership are met ... Germany and France set out summit position
www.euronews.com The German and French finance ministers have met in crisis talks to hammer out a joint position on growth ahead of Wednesday's European summit in Brussels. The weekend's G8 meeting left Germany and its strict stance on cutting debt first looking isolated as the tide turns on boosting growth. "We didn't really need to discuss the fact that the progress of European integration, and a strong Europe that is capable of acting is in our common interest and that we will cooperate for that," said German Finance Minister Wolfgang Sch%aumluble. "As Fran%ccedilois Hollande has said, we must study every option. Everything will be on the table. We know what we are going to talk about, we are going to argue for supporting growth while at the same time acting responsibly with our budgets," said his French counterpart Pierre Moscovici. Many governments are, four years into austerity, facing high unemployment and collapsing popularity in the polls, and looking to sweeten the pill of spending cuts. Meet Pete Peterson, Architect of Social Security and Medicare Cuts
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 17:00:23 05/17/12
enlarge Click for a larger idea of Peterson's world Just after the disastrous midterms in 2010, I wrote a lengthy post about who Pete Peterson was , and why he is exactly the wrong guy to be having a "bipartisan summit" on so-called "entitlement reform." Here's a snippet from back then: >
The Peter G. Peterson foundation claims to be bipartisan, yet their former CEO is out pimping a book, a new advocacy group and a position . Peter G. Peterson served as Secretary of Commerce under Richard Nixon. He claims to be very, very, very concerned about our deficit, yet not one word is uttered in this report about Wall Street's contribution to the deficit, the collapse of our economy, or any responsibility on the part of the financial industry to help reduce the deficit they helped create .
Ryan Grim at the Huffington Post has updated that information with some more current relevant facts and data: >
According to a review of tax documents from 2007 through 2011, Peterson has personally contributed at least $458 million to the Peter G. Peterson Foundation to cast Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and government spending as in a state of crisis, in desperate need of dramatic cuts. Peterson's millions have done next to nothing to change public opinion: In survey after survey, Americans reject the idea of cutting Social Security and Medicare. A recent national tour organized by AmericaSpeaks and largely funded by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation was met by audiences who rebuffed his proposals.
But Peterson has been able to drive a major shift in elite consensus about government spending, with talk of "grand bargains" that would slash entitlements, cut corporate tax rates and end personal tax breaks, such as the mortgage deduction, that benefit the middle class.
Peterson's deficit hawkery drives the narrative away from fairness right into the arms of willing Republicans. So this week, he held a "summit" of Washington elites to pearl-clutch over the deficit and debt in order to bolster their case. We can thank Bill Clinton for contributing to that narrative, too, since he was one of the featured speakers. The entire interview is at the end of this post.
Thanks to Peter Peterson, we have a country full of people who actually believe the national debt is the single biggest issue this country faces, and because he's put a "bipartisan" face on the dialogue, he gives the appearance that Democrats and Republicans alike should abandon Social Security and Medicare because they are, in his opinion, the primary drivers of the deficit. Worse yet, he's pimping those ideas to kids in order to drive a wedge between generations in the hope of succeeding at eroding these fundamental safety nets. >
Another effort to persuade America's youth about the shakiness of the entitlement programs is a joint venture between the Peterson Foundation and mtvU, the campus-based network created by MTV Networks, called Indebted . Peterson has already shelled out nearly $2 million to fund this effort to convince college students that Social Security won't be there for them, so therefore it should be slashed now -- a self-fulfilling policy prescription if ever there was one.
The educational website for Indebted , which borrows its look of revolutionary activism from contemporary stencil-based art made famous by graffiti artists Banksy and Shepard Fairey, explains that the inevitable and unavoidable debt burden to be shouldered by college kids through student loans, credits cards and a poor job market make it all the more important to cut entitlements now.
I like Seth Michaels' answer to that over at Working America : >
Peterson—a billionaire—never has to worry about dignity in retirement, about choosing between food and medicine, about having to work even when your health won’t allow it. Nor do members of Congress with their taxpayer-funded pensions, or well-paid TV hosts, lobbyists and think-tank presidents. They also feel the pressure of paying into the system much less than the majority of working people, since they only pay Social Security tax on the first $110,100 of their income .
So here’s a modest proposal for Peterson and the networks that advance his message. You can raise the retirement age to whatever you want—as long as, at age 65, every think-tanker, pundit and politician who pushes the fake crisis gets to swap places with a 65-year-old nurse, truck driver, hotel housekeeper or drill-press operator. Sound good?
Better yet, any lawmaker who thinks it's a good idea to raise the Social Security retirement age and erode Medicare should agree to relinquish their federal pension and health insurance retroactive to the day they take office. If they can't do that, then they recuse themselves from any vote concerning Medicare or Social Security. Seems like a fair deal to me.

Jobs and Medicare are issues beyond partisanship
Indiana Representative Joe Donnelly says he's able to cross the aisle to create compromise. "We're willing to talk with anyone to see if we can create a better program to reduce the debt." The hard line of the tea party isn't what's needed in Washington, Donnelly says, a dedication to jobs and compromise is. "Our founding fathers, when they created the constitution, nobody in that room was able to say I either get my way or I'm going home." Joss Whedon talks avengers 2 and we have the details! As you guys already know, the avengers are official member of the billion dollar club, so the natural next question is, when will we get another?! Well the sequel is ALREADY in the works, but we wonder if writer-director Joss Whedon will be back at the helm. In a sit-down interview before the film's US opening whedon said, "It's an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else's story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it. But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really cool." Sounds to me like he wants to direct, but just being humble...no need for that whedon, you already struck gold once! In my opinion whether he does or doesn't get the sequel, the avengers is HIS movie...but what about you guys...do you think the franchise will be good even without whedon? Eurozone finance ministers meet amid growing fears over Greece
www.euronews.com Greece's potential exit from the euro was once again top of the agenda as finance ministers gathered in Brussels for their monthly Eurogroup meeting. Last year such talk was unthinkable. But, with the on-going political deadlock in Athens and a failure there to form a coalition government, leaders were openly discussing what Greece needed to do to stay in the eurozone. ''It's very difficult in Greece right now. We shouldn't dictate what the country must do. But nevertheless, as we have lent money, the conditions we agreed should be met. We don't have a deal with any particular government, what we have is a deal with the Hellenic Republic,'' Luc Frieden, Luxembourg's Finance Minister said. The biggest fear remains contagion to the bloc's other debt stricken economies, especially Spain. Despite major worries about Spain's banking sector the country's economy minister Luis de Guindos insisted Madrid was delivering on its promises. ''In relation to Spain, I'd like to emphasise that Spain has taken all the measures judged necessary. We've implemented these with conviction. These measures will help growth to return and re-balance Spain's economy.'' Nonetheless, with Madrid's borrowing edging towards unsustainable levels, De Guindos also called on his counterparts to deliver a united response to prevent Greece's problems engulfing Spain and the rest of the bloc. Medical Marijuana Irrelevant To Romney
Via Reason.com: "During an interview with a local CBS News affiliate in Colorado yesterday, Mitt Romney got more than a little annoyed with a reporter after she asked about gay marriage, college tuition for children of illegal immigrants, and finally about medical marijuana. Romney wanted to talk about other things. And he told her so. "Aren't there issues of significance you'd like to talk about," Romney asked. "The economy, the growth of jobs, the need to put people back to work, the challenges of Iran? We've got enormous issues that we face. But go ahead, you want to talk about medical marijuana?"...".* Michael Shure (host of TwenTYTwelve) and comedian Jimmy Dore break it down on The Young Turks. Sessions: IRS Checks To Illegal Immigrants Part of Larger Border Problem
Sen. Sessions, a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, spoke on the Senate floor today about the need to restore lawfulness to the border and actions taken by the Obama Administration that undermine that goal. Sessions raised concerns about the DREAM Act proposed by Senator Dick Durbin, which would extend amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants, including to those convicted of crimes. Sessions also discussed an Inspector General's report found that more than $4 billion in taxpayer money was being distributed to illegal immigrants who claimed as dependents children living in other countries. Sessions also quoted Gov. Mitt Romney, who during a presidential debate recounted a conversation he'd had with Border Patrol agents in San Diego: "They said, when employers are willing to hire people who are here illegally, that's a magnet, and it draws them in. And sanctuary cities, giving tuition breaks to the kids of illegal aliens...Those things also have to be stopped. If we want to secure the border, we have to make sure we have a fence, determining where people are, enough agents to oversee it, and turn off that magnet. We can't talk about amnesty, we cannot give amnesty to those who have come here illegally." From: SenatorSessions Views: 461 20 ratings Time: 04:21 More in News & Politics
