Bechtel had recently returned from two weeks in Palestine as part of a delegation of Interfaith Peace Builders. He was in the West Bank during and after the attack on the Freedom Flotilla and was able to participate in protest/solidarity demonstrations in Ramallah and Sakhnin. Hany El Saidany has ties with family in Gaza. He participated in the Viva Palestina Convoy to Gaza in December 2009. This event was sponsored by the San Diego Socialist Organization.
