Czech Republic Debate on Mandatory Vaccination

In the Czech Republic, children are required by law to undergo vaccination, whether their parents agree with the practice, or not. The student association "Jurist" held a discussion seminar on Charles University's Law Faculty last week. The theme of the seminar was "The constitutionality of compulsory vaccination of minors in the Czech Republic". Discussion focused on promoting the rights of individuals in receiving medical care in the compulsory vaccination of minors. [Zuzana Candigliota, Human Rights League Lawyer] "There is continuity in the way of thinking from the communist era, people can't recognize what is actually still acceptable and what is not. That is why there are such big discrepancies." But there are more and more voices calling for voluntary vaccination, and also for improving the awareness of parents and pediatricians. [ Jana Mlada MD, State Institute for Drug Control]: "We must consider all the benefits that vaccination has for a child. For example, there is a "hexavaccine" - it is intended against tetanus, which can kill in fifty percent of cases." The problem is that both of these approaches have pros and cons. And who decides who is to be vaccinated? Voluntary vaccination as practiced in many European countries, involves a sensitive consideration of each child. They consider when and how ... Chinese Investigative Journalist Wang Keqin's Team Disbanded
For more news visit ? english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ? http Add us on Facebook ? facebook.com Investigative journalism in China is suffering a blow. A veteran reporter who's been praised for his in-depth reporting on sensitive issues has now been left without a team. His department at an influential newspaper was dismissed earlier this week. His supporters say it may be a way to silence him. Wang Keqin is known for his bold reporting on thorny issues in China. Now his investigative reporting department at the China Economic Times has been disbanded. The decision came on Monday, after a meeting by the paper's Communist Party Committee. Media freedom advocates fear it's yet another step towards more censorship under the communist regime. A veteran investigate journalist, Wang pushed the boundaries of reporting in China. He covered issues such as the fatal distribution of bad vaccines and corruption. The editorial team of the state-run paper, the China Economic Times faced a reshuffle in May last year. After being moved to another department, Wang declined to speak with reporters. [Wang Keqin, Chinese Investigative Journalist]: "According to the newest rules by the Times, we need the State Council's Development Research Center before speaking to foreign media. We need the editorial team's approval to speak with domestic media. So right now, we cannot accept any media interviews." Wang's supporters believe authorities are targeting him for his open reporting. [Tufu ... From: NTDTV Views: 38 2 ratings Time: 02:13 More in News & Politics

Vidcast #44 - Pixie Bob Kittens
[LESS INFO] 4 VIEWS | ADDED 16:04:46 02/20/11
The Pixie-Bob breed seems to have everything going for it: an intelligent, playful personality, a strong resemblance to the American Bobcat and an origin clouded in mystery and legend. Thought to be descended from matings between bobcats and house/barn cats, DNA testing has so far failed to prove a link to a wild ancestor. Pixie Bob History The Pixie-Bob is an American breed. The first Pixie-Bob was believed to be the issue of a random mating, between a small Coastal Red Bobcat and a short-tailed polydactyl barn cat. Carol Ann Brewer, of Washington State, purchased a male polydactyl kitten from the resulting litter in 1985. Because of the many legends, surrounding such matings between wild and domestic cats, she dubbed this first kitten a "Legend Cat". Within a year, Ms. Brewer had acquired a few more of these cats and began to establish the Pixie-Bob breed. One female kitten, named Pixie, became the dam line and namesake for the breed. The Pixie-Bob was accepted into TICA as "new breed and color" in 1995 and for Championship status in 1997. Currently, only TICA and CCA accept the Pixie-Bob for registry. It should be noted that there is also an "American Bobtail" breed, accepted as a separate cat breed by TICA and recognized by the CFA as well. This breed has a different breed history, but it does share some physical characteristics, notably the bobbed tail. The Pixie-Bob is muscular, with a heavy bone structure. Males will typically mature to 12-26 pounds, with females a bit smaller. The coat is double one and can feature spots, broken bars and rosett Colors are shades of brown or russet, with silver or black t is short (a minimum of two inches) and is carried high. Ey deep-set. Brown and gold colored eyes are preferred but accepted. Many Pixie-Bobs also have lynx-pointed ear tuft is common, with a maximum of seven toes per paw. This i breeds wherein polydactylism is accepted for registry. The Pixie Bob is a hardy breed with no special care needs. Some breeders have raised concern about the effect of certain vaccines may have on cats of this breed. Pixie Bob cat o consult with both the breeder and veterinarian about their cat's vaccine plan.

Pneumonia Vaccine Recommended for Smokers, Thyroid Disorders Linked to Glaucoma, Depression During Pregnancy Increases Risk for Preterm Delivery
[LESS INFO] 33 VIEWS | ADDED 21:20:00 10/23/08
(October 23, 2008 - Insidermedicine) From Washington - U.S. federal advisers have recommended that smokers be vaccinated against pneumonia, along with children and the elderly. If this recommendation is accepted by the CDC, it would be the first vaccine recommendation targeted specifically at smokers. Previous studies have shown that the risk of pneumococcal disease rises with the number of cigarettes smoked, and smokers account for half of otherwise healthy adults with pneumococcal infections.
From Alabama - According to research in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, thyroid disorders increase the risk for glaucoma. In a study of over 12,000 adults, researchers found that having a thyroid problem at some point in life was linked with a 38% increased risk for developing glaucoma. The researchers suggest that there is a biological link between thyroid problems and glaucoma which accounts for these findings.
And finally, from California - According to research in the journal Human Reproduction, depression during pregnancy increases the risk of premature birth. In a study of nearly 800 pregnant women, researchers found that those with mild depression had a 60% increased risk for preterm delivery, while those with severe depression were more than twice as likely to deliver their baby early. The researchers suggest that emphasizing the treatment of depression in prenatal care could lead to a significant reduction in preterm deliveries.
