From Milwaukee - Research published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases finds that immediate antiretroviral therapy is the best approach to treating early HIV infections. Researchers randomized 130 patients with early HIV to immediate antiretroviral therapy or until treatment was medically indicated. They found that the infection progressed much faster in those whose treatment was deferred.
From Kentucky - Vaginal progesterone may help prevent preterm births, according to a report published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology . Studying women with a short cervix--a known risk factor for premature delivery--researchers found that vaginal progesterone significantly reduced rates of births prior to 33 weeks gestation.
And finally, from Hamilton - A new report published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine finds that young adults frequently stop exercising once they attend university or college. Researchers followed over 600 adolescents until they were 24-27 years old, finding a 24% decrease in physical activity over the 12 year study period--with the decline greatest among men entering post secondary schooling.

From the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, Hispanic women are 20% more likely to die from breast cancer than non-Hispanic white women. The researchers from the University of Kentucky also found that Hispanic women who received chemotherapy were 1.5 times more likely to die from breast cancer. The researchers also pointed out that this difference in cancer survival between Hispanic and non-Hispanic white women does not appear to extend to all-cause or non-breast cancer mortality.
From Euroecho, the annual meeting of the European Association of Echocardiography, researchers are working toward developing protocols for evaluating myocardial damage associated with different cancer treatments. As treatments for cancer have improved survival rates in patients, the long-term effects of these treatments are of growing concern. Cardiotoxicity is a common side-effect of many cancer treatments, and the current research projects aim to identify when patients might benefit from changes in cancer therapy, and when protective treatments against cardiotoxicity are indicated.
And finally, from Los Angeles, researchers from the University of Southern California have reported progress toward identifying a blood-based DNA biomarker for ovarian cancer. Such a diagnostic tool could prove very useful in both the early detection of ovarian cancer as well as monitoring for recurrence.

OLLABELLE is a multi-talented, democratic collective whose participants share vocal and songwriting duties. This New York quintet draws from a deep well of gospel, blues, bluegrass, and country influences to create timelessly resonant music that honors the integrity of its sources while remaining effortlessly contemporary. Emmylou Harris said of the band, "Every time I hear something on the radio I truly love, it's Ollabelle." The band has emerged from a five year period of great artistic and personal change - including marriages, births, tours and other projects - to deliver their most assured, deeply felt album to date, "Neon Blue Bird." The CD was produced by Ollabelle and recorded in Athens, NY and at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock. GOITSE (pronounced gwi-cha) is a five member Irish Trad band which specializes in their unique rhythmic arrangements of well known tunes and own compositions. Goitse is a Donegal Irish word meaning 'come here'. The band, now in it's third year, are all students of Traditional Music and Dance at the University of Limerick and have captured several prominent awards including Colm Phelan becoming the first World Bodhrn Champion. This is the band's first tour in the states.

AMANDA SHIRES is a singing fiddle-playing Texan who just released her second solo CD called "Carrying Lightning." She deftly employs her fiddle/violin, ukulele and even whistling ... the resulting sound is a beautiful but woozily surrealistic swoon. Amanda was also recently seen in the recent Hollywood movie Country Strong where she played the fiddle player in the band backing Gwyneth Paltrow's fictional country superstar. WoodSongs alum Rod Picott will join Amanda on acoustic guitar. BEN HALL is a 22-year old multi talented National Thumbpicking Champion from Okolona, Mississippi. Ben has also been recognized nationally as a singer/songwriter who prefers traditional styles of music. While attending Belmont University, Hall has managed to perform at some of Nashville's most famous venues including the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame. Although he makes frequent appearances as a soloist, Hall has worked the stage as a sideman for legends such as Jeannie Seely, Jan Howard and Charlie Louvin. Ben has recorded with Louvin, Kurt Wagner & Cortney Tidwell, and Candi Staton. In 2011 Tompkins Square will release a new Ben Hall album full of guitar tunes heavily influenced by his heroes Merle Travis and Chet Atkins.

Let’s talk sports
Well, the US Soccer team was eliminated from the World Cup by Ghana in 2-1 overtime defeat. Another thing that was predicated correctly by Ride The Pine. The problem with US soccer is simple, attitude. The United States never goes in to a World Cup talking about winning, they talk about how far they will advance or their shortcomings. American soccer will never take off until they get a star with star like attitude, who doesn’t except just a good performance but expects to win. Good news, there’s four more years to practice and maybe Freddy Adu would stop stinking by that point.
Did anyone realize that the NBA draft, well the NHL draft too, happened this week? University of Kentucky’s John Wall was taken first overall by the Washington Wizards . Most of the commotion was about the Miami Hea t and Chicago Bulls making trades to clear cap space to sign two big name free agents, possibly one of them being Lebron James . This whole Lebron James thing makes me laugh because what has this guy won. Look, he’s the most physically gifted basketball player ever but some of his best games have been Game 3s, not Game 7s. One trip to the finals, swept. If you get Lebron for your team, I guarantee great jersey sales and an unbelievable regular season record, but playoffs.
The other interesting thing that came out of the NBA draft the other night was the Portland Trailblazers firing their General Manager, Kevin Pritchard , prior to the draft. And Pritchard stayed to make the selections. First off, managing a business 101: If you fire someone make sure they leave as soon as possible. Second, if I was Kevin Pritchard and was just fired from a team and then was asked to stay to make the draft selections my first round pick would have been myself. Followed by my mom, and my cat. Given us all a big signing bonus and called a night. This is why Portland is a Mickey Mouse franchise.
And here are a couple of things to check out while you’re on the pine...
* Another correct prediction by Ride The Pine as John Isner was bounced from the second round of Wimbledon after his historic first round victory that spanned three days. You just can’t come back from that type of match.
* Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Edwin Jackson threw the fourth no-hitter of the this MLB season against the Tampa Bay Rays . He did it by also giving up 8 walks.
* Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback, Michael Vick’ s birthday party ended with someone being shot. Although Vick was not around at the time of the shooting, maybe you should stay home next year.
