Chinese authorities detained a human rights lawyer in his office to prevent him from meeting with Merkel. The lawyer had been invited to a function by the German embassy in advance. On Saturday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel wrapped up her fifth visit to China since taking office. While Merkel was able to reassure Chinese leaders on the prospects of the Euro and Europe's recovery from the sovereign debt crisis, she was prevented from meeting with a prominent human rights lawyer. The German Embassy in Beijing had invited Lawyer Mo Shaoping to attend a function with Merkel on February 2nd and afterwards to hold private discussions. [Mo Shaoping, Human Rights Lawyer]: "Chancellor Merkel hoped to meet with me and also the editor of 'Yanhuang Chunqiu,' Mr. Wu Si and have a talk in private. Mainly she wanted to discuss with me the situation of law and order in China, and the situation of lawyers in China." However on the day of the meeting, Beijing police locked Mo up in his office for several hours to prevent him from attending the event. [Mo Shaoping, Human Rights Lawyer]: "Afterwards they said there was no legal foundation for it. They were just following orders from above. China will hold the 18th Party Congress this year. German Chancellor Angela Merkel Meets Hu Jintao for Talks
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me German Chancellor Angela Merkel held talks with Chinese Communist Party leader Hu Jintao and top legislator Wu Bangguo in Beijing on Friday. During her meeting with Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday, Merkel urged China to use its influence to persuade Iran to give up its nuclear program. Wen appeared to reject the pressure to do more on Iran, telling reporters later in the day that China objected to Western nations politicizing the "normal commercial relationship" it has with the Islamic Republic. Merkel is also expected to bid farewell to China's outgoing leaders, despite differences over human rights and democracy and issues like intellectual property theft. Both Hu and Wen are due to retire from their state posts in March 2013 and hand over power to successors, most likely led by current Vice President Xi Jinping. The next generation of leaders has not expressed different economic or trade policy views, and are expected to proceed cautiously once in power. The Chancellor will fly to the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou on Friday afternoon to attend a business forum... before wrapping up her trip to China on Saturday. For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird criticized the Chinese regime for its (quote) "abhorrent" treatment towards religious groups in a speech he gave in London on Monday. He said he would speak out against what he saw as violations of religious freedom. (quote) "In China, we see Roman Catholic priests, Christian clergy and their laity, worshipping outside of state-sanctioned boundaries, who are continually subject to raids, arrests, and detention...we see Falun Gong practitioners, Tibetan Buddhists, and Uyghur Muslims face harassment, and physical intimidation. These abhorrent acts fly in the face of our core principals, our core values." Baird made the comment ahead of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's planned trip to China in just two weeks. The Chinese regime has recently launched a crackdown on dissidents ahead of its upcoming leadership transition in the fall of this year. Largest Human Migration Highlights Migrant Labor Issues
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me We've been telling you about the flood of travel that happens every year around Chinese New Year. One major cause of that congestion is the issue of migrant workers--people who live and work in cities but can't register as residents there. That means they have to leave their families behind in the countryside. And for many, it's a long trip home. Every year, at about this time, the world's largest human migration begins. It's a few days before the Chinese New Year, as marked by the traditional lunar calendar. This year it falls on January 23, kicking off a 15-day long celebration. It's an occasion to spend time with the family. [Yu Guoxin, Construction Supplies Salesman]: "Going home is to reunite with the whole family. The family spends the Chinese New Year together and issues in a happy New Year. My parents are still back at home. So I must go home." But for many, it marks the start of an arduous journey home. Over the next 40 days there will be an unprecedented 3.1 billion passenger trips throughout China, according to state-run Xinhua. It's putting a strain on an already overtaxed transit system. At the center of the migration are millions of migrant workers. According to China's National Bureau of Statistics, over half of the population now lives in cities. [Zhou Xiaozheng, Sociologist at Renmin University]: "Last year the urban population exceeded the ... From: NTDTV Views: 105 1 ratings Time: 02:12 More in News & Politics

Massive Chinese New Year Migration Begins
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me There's something universal about going home for the holidays. And with the Chinese New Year coming up hundreds of millions of people are testing the limits of China's transit system. That means for some people, even getting a ticket can be a challenge. It's the largest annual human migration. Hundreds of millions of Chinese citizens make their way home for the Lunar New Year. [Zhang Fengling, Student from Hebei Province]: "You definitely have to go home for lunar New Year, I think that goes for all Chinese people. It doesn't matter where you are, you just have to go home for the New Year." Even though the lunar New Year isn't until Monday, trains, planes, and buses are already overrun with travelers. [Xiang Fan, Duty Station Manager]: "Each day now there are about 430 buses going out, carrying about 12000 people. The passenger flow this year surpasses the transport capacity, and it should be the highest so far. Compared to last year, it should have increased by about 10 percent." That's an estimated 3.1 billion passenger trips over 40 days, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency. In hopes of making holiday travel easier, the Ministry of Railways launched a new online ticketing system. But it does little good for migrant workers like Gao Yongxu, who have no access to the Internet. [Gao Yongxu, Migrant Worker]: "I queued up for five hours, and still ended ... US Treasury Secretary Geithner to Visit China, Japan
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is traveling to China and Japan next week. The US is eager to push planned economic sanctions on Iran and needs the support of Asia's biggest powers. Iran is suspected of continuing nuclear research, despite international efforts. The Obama administration wants to curb Tehran's oil revenue through economic sanctions to prevent Iran's nuclear program from developing further. However, two big challenges block the way. The Chinese regime is the largest buyer of Iranian oil and has frequently stated its opposition to the sanctions. And on top of that, Iran is threatening to block off a critical oil supply route through the Strait of Hormuz if sanctions are imposed. 40 percent of the world's oil travels through those shipping lanes, and a blockade would drive up oil prices at a time when the global economy is already fragile. The European Union on the other hand is already on the road to a complete embargo of Iranian oil. Besides the sanctions, Geithner is expected to discuss strategies for global economic growth and trade during his trip to China and Japan. Tourism Along Mekong River Resumes After Attacks
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ me.lt Tourism has now resumed along the Mekong River in Yunnan Province. Tourist trips were put on hold after passenger ferries were robbed in August, and more than a dozen Chinese sailors killed in an attack in October. The Mekong River begins in China, and runs along the border of several Southeast Asian countries. The tourist line along the Mekong River from China to Thailand was resumed on Tuesday. It opened four months after the security situation along the river deteriorated in August last year. Last year the passenger ferries along the Mekong River were all suspended after some tourists were robbed in August, and 13 Chinese sailors were killed in October. The Chinese tourist ship Golden Triangle 2 set sail at Jinghong Port in China's Yunnan Province and sailed along the river to its destination port of Chiang Saen in Thailand. Fourteen Australian tourists were onboard the ship. [Allan, Tourist]: "I've heard of the pirates on the river, but as I understand it, they were traveling in a vessel which was traveling much more slowly, and the vessel we are in will travel very quickly. I don't think the pirates will be a problem for us." The captain of the ship was not as optimistic as his passengers. [Zhu Bing, Captain of Golden Triangle 2]: "I still feel worried because the robbery and the attack happened not long ago and I am worried about the situation. I have to go ... Chinese and Japanese Leaders Sign Direct Currency Exchange Deal
For more news and videos visit ➡ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ➡ http Add us on Facebook ➡ on.fb.me As part of the Japanese prime minister's recent trip to China, which ended yesterday, the two countries signed a new currency agreement. The agreement will make it possible for their currencies to be traded directly for the first time. The agreement could signal a significant tightening of economic relations for the world's second and third largest economies. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda was in Beijing for bilateral talks with the Chinese leader, Wen Jiabao, when they announced a plan to begin trading their currencies directly. Up until now, trade between yuan and yen had to be first converted into US dollars%mdasha process that added to the cost of doing business. The direct currency exchange will grease an already lucrative bilateral trade between the world's second and third largest economies. The two leaders also said that the Japan Bank for International Cooperation will be allowed to issue bonds in yuan%mdashthat's the first time a foreign bank will be allowed to do so. China is currently Japan's largest trading partner, with annual trade worth roughly $340-billion. These new economic agreements between the Chinese regime and Japan come amid the backdrop of increased US involvement in the region. The United States has courted Tokyo to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, a trade pact that includes regional powers like Australia and Vietnam ...
