Emperor Ex - "Sig Alert": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
Emperor X is a pop/noise/folk music project headed by American songwriter and sound artist CR Matheny. A former high school science teacher, he dropped out of a graduate physics program in 2004 to focus on music. Over the next eight years, he released a string of critically-acclaimed lo-fi speed folk and grabbed the attention of writers at NPR, Pitchfork, The New Yorker, the Los Angeles Times, The Huffington Post, Said the Gramophone, and dozens of other music blogs. Reviewers compared Matheny's tracks to The Microphones, Black Dice, and early Modest Mouse. Salon.com ranked his Bar/None Records release _Western Teleport_ among the most overlooked albums of 2011 and termed his music "wonderfully bizarre...[and] triumphant in its deep empathy and humanity." Said the Gramophone/McSweeney's writer Sean Michaels described the lyrics of Emperor X songs as both "ghosted" and "precise": they discuss subjects as diverse as plate tectonics, paramilitary insurgencies, religious fanaticism, the nature of time, failed attempts to fix broken air conditioners, and Matheny\'s poetical obsession with rapid transit systems. He tours the United States very frequently, usually traveling on public buses and bringing only what he can carry in a small backpack and guitar case. Emperor X also completed several international tours including trips to Mexico, Canada, and Australia. From: sxsw Views: 66 4 ratings Time: 02:56 More in Entertainment

Young Magic - "Sparkly": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
This is a beautiful story. Three vagabonds travel across the world with no direction home, record music whilst on the road, meet up in New York City, and form a band. Drawing a symbiotic balance from the soundtracks of West Africa, Turkey and beyond, Brainfeeder hip-hop, UK Bass and 60s psychedelic soul, Young Magic is an ethereal exploration into past and future. Appearing at Iceland's Airwaves festival in October 2011, New York's CMJ festival in the same month and touring as main support for Youth Lagoon throughout America and Canada this November, Young Magic's sound is spreading far and wide in the lead up to the release of their debut album Melt on Carpark Records February 14th 2012. Young Magic began with singer and producer Isaac Emmanuel. In early 2010 he quit his world and left his hometown in Australia with all of his belongings packed into a suitcase. He wandered through northern Europe, across the UK, over to New York City then down to Mexico, recording with a microphone, his voice and whatever instruments he would find along the way. There were no plans, no accommodation: instead, couch surfing with friends, always low on coin, always high on the thrill of it all. Whilst living in a small Mexican town called Tepoztlan, Isaac had been in touch with an old friend from Melbourne who was on his own world adventure, Michael Italia. A musician and photographer who was also traveling around the world with little more than a backpack, and some portable recording gear ... From: sxsw Views: 69 5 ratings Time: 03:40 More in Music

The MEXICAN INSTITUTE OF SOUND third disc is revealed: "SOY SAUCE." It's funny, but never really thought I would have three albums. Thus passed many shows, many trips, many movies, many friends. We play from Rotterdam to Albuquerque without stopping. Of all the places in the world have written to connect to me.."Pi%ntildeata", the second album was a bit more planned. I did team with my dear friend Holger Beier from Le Hammond Inferno and had a memorable recording sessions. For this record was a guest Chris Frantz of Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club, Adrian Dargelos of Babas%oacutenicos, Tanaka of Fantastic Plastic Machine, Joselo and Quique Rangel from Caf%eacute Tacuba. The Liquits ... well ... tons of nice people. With this album has been complete madness. We toured around and has been the most fun to me happened in my life. Now we are with "Soy Sauce." According to me is my best album. I recorded it in 3 stages in Mexico City with Holger Beier, is already a tradition. This time besides the Liquits studio also visited the studio of Molotov, was fun to be there. I have less guest this time. Ad Rock of Beastie Boys rapping on a version of Alocatel. Joselo Rangel also recorded some great guitars and my dear drummer Paco also got his own. Julian Placencia with which play live was the super engineer with Paolo Morabito. The album is more eclectic: it has Mariachi, Hip Hop, Soul, French Chanson, Punk, Ska and Cumbia. I hope you enjoy it like me. Camilo Lara From: sxsw Views: 1161 21 ratings Time: 03:58 More in Music
