And while I may love this time of year, many hate it. Regardless, being prepared to face the elements is wise in any season. With smartphones being so common nowadays, having gloves that will respond to touchscreens is almost as important as owning a coat. It is considered a "man's problem." But more WOMEN are dying of heart disease than men. It is the number one health problem in women... Megan Lowry introduces us to a Bismarck woman who never thought she would be one of them... At age 37 and a mother of two expecting her third child, Raquel Richter thought she was healthy. "I didn't think that was something health wise i'd have to worry about other issues like breast cancer, Diabetes not my heart." But on December 3 2010 that changed. "I woke up because I was having trouble breathing and the only thing I was thinking was asthma or an allergic reaction I sat up for almost an hour. I woke up my husband and he said lets go to the hospital." Her pulmonary artery was completely blocked. "I cried and told my husband I loved him and that we were going to get through this but I didn't think I was" One in three women over the age of 20 will suffer from a heart attack. Raquel's Cardiologist Stephen Bernard says the danger is understanding the symptoms. He says unlike men who experience pain during a heart attack, most women feel discomfort. (Bernard) "The Nature of heart disease in women it's easier to write it off as oh we ate something and our stomach is upset maybe its not my hear and a lot of people go into denial (Raquel)"I was expecting numbness, I am just so thankful Id people there who knew what they were doing to save my life " Two months later Raquel is recovering, but not with out heart ache. The heart attack caused her to miscarry. "It was very emotional for me." For her the experience is a wake up call. So she's taking recovery one step at a time. Id rather be here, You can't take care of anybody if your not here. "It's amazing in such a short time how much has changed" Megan Lowry, Kx News Raquel says the biggest change in her life has been the increase of activity. As a family, they are making an effort to get out and walk together. She also says making small changes in her diet have made a real difference. And her kids barely notice the fast food is gone. It is National Go Red Day to raise awarenmess about heart disease in women... That's the reason why so many people are wearing red today...
