C++ and Beyond 2011: Scott, Andrei and Herb - Ask Us Anything
[LESS INFO] 3 VIEWS | ADDED 15:55:00 01/03/12
I was able to attend C++ and Beyond 2011 and it was a tremendous experience. I captured some great footage from the event for C9, like this end-of-last-day panel - Ask Us Anything - with Scott, Andrei and Herb . Great questions and excellent answers. This is the third and final panel from C%B 2011 to air on C9. The other two panels: C++11 and Concurrency and Parallelism - are very well worth your time if you haven't had a chance to watch/listen to them yet.
Thanks Andrei Alexandrescu , Scott Meyers and Herb Sutter for putting on such a great event for C++ developers and for allowing Channel 9 to broadcast some of it. I am so thrilled to learn that C++ and Beyond 2012 will take place August 5-8, 2012 ! I encourage you to attend (I know I'll be there!). It will be well worth your (and your company's) time. The way I think about C%B is: Mind-bending C++ content that's also practical , presented by industry experts who are very engaging, passionate about C++ and very approachable. The folks in attendance are stellar native developers from around the world, employing C++ in a variety of contexts.
Make sure to check out all the C%B 2011 content we're lucky enough to have on C9
Enjoy! Learn! Go native!

AFL-CIO Launches 'Share Your Story' To Document Unemployment Crisis
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 15:00:23 12/07/11
The AFL-CIO launched a new website on Tuesday designed to capture the stories of the unemployed in their own words. The website, Share Your Story allows site visitors to upload their stories and pictures to the site, providing a human face to the issue of unemployment, which politicians talk a lot about, but don't seem nearly as interested in doing something about.
Many of the stories on the site are like those of Pat from San Jose: >
I was a Communications worker for just under 20 years. After I was "surplused" in 1995 I went to work at a non-union job in the same industry which later became Worldcom followed by positions in two other companies. After the dot com bust in 2001, finding a full time job was hopeless. Apparently the rules had changed and I did not have the education to continue doing the work I had done for 25 years. The past 10 1/2 years have held sporadic, temporary and part time positions, most in retail which paid very little and I have now been unemployed for about a year. This track record, along with the fact that I am now 61 years old doesn't offer much for a resume. My thought is to apply for Social Security (a real oxymoron) if the powers that be will allow it. My retirement fund has all but vanished in the wake of what has happened. I don't know what plan the 1% has for us--maybe they expect that we will simply vanish the way our money did on Wall Street.
Janet from Texas questions the whole system: >
I have two masters degree and am all but dissertation for a doctrate in social work. I worked, consistently for the first 30 years of my adulthood and am now unemployed. I am living with friends because I cannot get unemployment. I cannot get unemployment because I quit my last job. I quit my last job because they were not paying me. I am suffering, in chronic pain, because I have no health care coverage. I am substitute teaching to try to cover my expenses so if a permanent job comes through, I will still have a car to get there. My question to you, as I stand in front of a classroom of young people: I am supposed to tell them to get a high school degree and go on to college because...............why?
She is far from alone in being a hard-working person who played by the rules and was still left out in the cold by the system. Even more heartbreaking are stories like that of Marge from Illinois: >
I am writing to say what a profound negative impact joblessness has on a family. My son in law is in the building trades industry. Due to lack of activity he has been laid off for the last two years almost as much as he has worked. This has placed much stress on their young family and marriage. In fact the stress has gotten to the point where my son in law is back to drinking heavily which has led to their separation. I might add that they have two young sons. One is six weeks old. So I have a very strong opinion that we need to do what it takes to extend unemployment benefits. What will families do if they have absolutely NO income? And more than that we need to get the economy back on track. What is wrong with Congress that they are more concerned about seeing someone fail or getting their way than to look out for the good of the people who elected them? I am still hopeful that those members of Congress who have real values will stand firm and do what's right!
AFL-CIO's release urges everyone to participate: >
You need to check out this website, right now.
It’s a powerful reminder of the real faces behind America’s sobering unemployment statistics. It has real pictures and stories from job-hunters and impacted people from all walks of life—from your state and from every state.
I hope you’ll take a minute to look at these powerful stories, share them and add your own.
If Congress fails to act by Dec. 31, extended unemployment insurance will expire for millions.
We never forget these are real people who face the prospect of going hungry and getting thrown out of their homes soon after the holidays if Congress fails to act. Many of us have been there before—or have friends and family who have.
Even though obstructionists in Congress are willing to ignore our joblessness crisis, we refuse to let these stories get brushed under the rug.
Click here to see and share the stories and faces behind America’s joblessness crisis.
Then, share our website on Facebook and Twitter and forward this message to all your friends.
These stories and pictures won’t just live on a website. We’ll share them with the media, hand-deliver them to Congress during our massive day of action on Dec. 8 and promote them widely on the Internet.
If callous members of Congress think they can sit back and allow unemployment aid to expire while they play political games, they’re wrong. With your help we’re going to force them to see this crisis head-on—with real faces of real people who are jobless and struggling in this brutal economy.
See these stories, share them and add your voice.
In Solidarity,
Manny Herrmann
Online Mobilization Coordinator, AFL-CIO
P.S. It’s not just people who are unemployed right now who have stories to tell. Millions of others do, too.
Maybe you’ve been jobless in the past and relied on unemployment benefits to get through. Or you’ve seen firsthand how much unemployment hurts your community and America—and how much unemployment aid helps. Or maybe you can write a brief statement of support for the jobless or urge Congress to act—even in just one to two sentences.
Together, we’re creating a visual display of the impact of unemployment that will be too powerful to ignore. See and share stories and statements in your state and across America. Then, add your own.

SPLASH 2011: Dave Thomas - On Modern Application Development
[LESS INFO] 25 VIEWS | ADDED 17:37:56 11/10/11
It's been a while since we've been lucky enough to catch up with Dave Thomas . Dave is well known for his work in object oriented programming language design, dynamic language development (SmallTalk), and virtual machines. Dave did the initial development of the Eclipse IDE and is currently the CEO of Bedarra Corporation. Dave is a recognized leader in the discipline of making software. A godfather in software engineering. Many technical conferences benefit from his support and influence.
Here, we learn about the history of SPLASH and find out what's on Dave's mind with respect to modern app development methodologies. Dave shares his wise opinions on the state of objects, JavaScript, Dart, browser DOM, model-driven development, IDEs, and more. Dave is on a mission to democratize software engineering for the masses by removing unnecessary complexity in programming abstractions (has Dave lost his faith in objects?). What does this mean?
Thank you for spending time with C9, Dave! Always a pleasure. We'll see you again at YOW! 2011
Tune in. Enjoy.

Recently, Channel 9 was invited to attend the great SPLASH conference . What is SPLASH? Systems, Programming, Languages and Applications: Software for Humanity . A big thanks to the SPLASH event organizers for inviting me and my camera to engage some key computer scientists and engineers in geeky, fun conversation! SPLASH is a great event! I learned a ton and met many amazing computer scientists and students.
SPLASH is an annual conference that embraces all aspects of software construction and delivery, and that joins all factions of programming technologies. Since 2010 SPLASH is the umbrella for OOPSLA and Onward! [source=splashcon.org]

The biggest thing of all was the upset the Juggernauts put on the Mustangs.Bishop Brossart (3-2) looked to rebound from the Newport Catholic (5-0) whipping of 62-0 last week. The Mustangs will hosted Lloyd Memorial (2-4) at Scott High School with game time temperatures in the mid to upper 50's.Lloyd Memorial's opponents have averaged nearly 10 (9.8) points more per game and have been shut out once this season. The Mustangs has been outscored by about a third as much (3.4 points) and most of those came during last week's shutout. When the Juggernauts win, the team averages three more touchdowns per gamete the opponents. During the team's two losses, it has given up 80 points and scored merely two touchdowns.Instead, KHSAA Class 2A football is not about the law of averages, it is about playing four 12 minute quarters and watching what happens. The homecoming game temperature hovered in the mid to upper 50's, with a slight breeze and some drizzle. The cold and dampness of the night did not stop either team from heating up late in the first quarter. Brossart's Jesse Orth capped off a drive by calling his own number and the quarterback went straight up the middle, and plowed through two defender to dive into the end zone, to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead. But the Juggernauts had and answer. After the kickoff, on the first play from scrimmage, Lloyd's quarterback, Dexter Smith went deep to find Tyler York running in stride to catch a 70 yard pass to get the game within in one point. (The PAT failed.)In the second quarter, the home team spread the margin out to eight points after running back Jacob Elbert burst around the end and down the sidelines for a 59 yard score that put gave the Mustangs some breathing room. Later in the half, Jesse Orth found Spencer Brown open on a post pattern for a 31 yard pitch and catch. That gave the Mustangs a 21-6 lead and breathing room that would prove to be needed.Lloyd came back and sustained a healthy looking drive that started on their 42. The drive started on the Juggernauts 48. On the first play of the drive, Dakota Kidd, chomped of a 27 yard run and the visiting team was in business on the 25 yard line. It took the team all four downs to convert, but the drive continued from the 14. With a fresh set of downs, QB Dexter Smith keeps it for a run of 11 yards. From the Three yard line, Kidd plows his way in off the right tackle to keep the score manageable at 21-12.Lloyd came out int he second half swinging like they had a point to prove. The team drove straight down the field and took the lead away from the host team on a two yard run from Kidd. 25-21 Juggernauts. The Mustangs would not score until midway through the fourth quarter on a 41 yard pass play from Orth to Brown. The PAT failed and the score was 27-25 Mustangs. With 16 seconds left in the game, the Juggernauts pulled it through scoring a touchdown fora 32-27 victory. Brossart falls to 3-3 and Lloyd improves to 3-4.Next week, Brossart will show its other colors against the Newport Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. The Green and black will wear pink jerseys with green numbers to raise money for Chicks N Chucks" for breast cancer awareness. Three cheerleaders are still in need of $100 sponsorships for their uniforms. You can support their cause by purchasing a t-shirt for $10 and wearing it to the game to receive free admission. You can contact bkramer@bishopbrossart.org to order or reserve yours today.

CIRCUS
[LESS INFO] 16 VIEWS | ADDED 04:22:53 07/24/11
"The CIRCUS is NO FUN for the animals... Big Cat Rescue does something called Operant Conditioning to teach our cats to do things we need them to do for medical reasons, such as lean against the fence to get their shots or open their mouth so we can look at their teeth. We do this with rewards and the cats have fun because they are smart and bored and love the attention. We never punish or withhold food to make them do something, and the cats only do it when they want to -- not on our schedule. But because tigers and lions in circus acts must perform specific acts at precise times and ""the show must go on,"" positive reinforcement is not the only method used by circus trainers or night club magicians. Often the cats are beaten, starved and confined for long periods of time in order to get them to cooperate with what the trainers want. And life on the road means that most of a cat's life is spent in a circus wagon in the back of a semi-truck or in a crowded, stinking box car on a train or barge. The messages the public gets from circus acts couldn't be worse. These acts either show man dominating one of nature's most magnificent creatures, which would never happen on an even playing field, or worse are promoted as illustrations of the ""special bond"" the trainer has with his captive. The latter just fuels the trade in big cats as pets and that never ends well for the cat. Last, but not least, circus acts are transient and often are a way of moving big cats across state lines or even in and out of the country. Because the endangered species protection acts are so poorly enforced, this transience creates a legal cover for the illegal importation and exportation of exotic cats. If a circus act leaves the U.S. with 10 tigers and comes back with 25, they can just say that the 15 additional tigers were born on the road -- there is no way to prove it if they were taken from the wild. No U.S. government agency tracks the ages nor the individual cats in private collections. Christine Schweikert, commodities expertDW-TV:And joining us in the studio now is Christine Schweikert, a commodities' expert How do we know if our commodities are extracted in a "humane" way? Christine Schweikert: Well you don't know it at the moment, you can only guess. But they're trying to change that now by giving a certificate to a raw material which shows you where it comes from exactly and through which hands it's gone to make sure it's properly mined. DW-TV: When you say 'they' - who is behind it? Christine Schweikert: America on the one hand and the OECD countries on the other. DW-TV: Our modern way of life is pretty dependent on these rare resources every year some 130-thousand tons of these rare earth elements are used for various items required by our modern civilisation: 40 percent for the production of batteries. 25 percent for crude oil refineries. 20 percent for lenses and spectacles. And some 10 percent for mobile phones and LCD screens. So we really NEED tantalum, and that puts countries like China, Russia, Africa and Brazil into a pretty strong position, right?... Christine Schweikert: That's true, and it is already a problem, as we have seen with China, which has restricted its exports of rare earth. And I think that's going to become an increasing problem - we're going to see more protectionism on the raw materials front. Not neccessarily because these countries are 'evil', but because they're using it for themselves. DW-TV: If we've seen this problem before, why didn't any European country invest in tantalum or other earth elements? Christine Schweikert: Well, some are, certainly - not in Europe, because it's very difficult to get mining through here - but there are companies financing mining projects in other countries. In return, getting long-term contracts suppling them with the raw material they want. DW-TV: So are there any other countries with whom we could do business? Other than China or Russia, so we are less dependent on them... Christine Schweikert: Yes, but it takes a long time to build up a supply, and a lot of money, and I don't know whether the European position is the best one in that case. DW-TV: Not at the moment, but if you say that it takes time, why didn't we start earlier investing in it? Christine Schweikert: That's a very good question. I don't know. A number of institutions pointed out that China would be using its rare earth on its own, for itself, it's its biggest customer anyway - But I don't know why that's happened. Until last year, people weren't alerted to it because the prices were fairly low. Now they're high, they're shooting up and suddenly it gets more important. DW-TV: Now our situation becomes clearer. We're also thinking about recycling the material - could that be an alternative? Christine Schweikert: To some extent, yes. But at the moment, recycling quotas are very low. Zero percent for some metals, 4 percent for tantalum. It's difficult and it's going to take some time, but higher prices will be an incentive. Interview: Monika Jones

Super Bowl XLV Recap
[LESS INFO] 5 VIEWS | ADDED 20:31:56 02/08/11
So out of the 11 games throughout the NFL post season, I only correctly pick 4 games. Big Deal, I got the one that matters right. When I picked the Green Bay Packers to win Super Bowl XLV. How did I know they would win, it wasn’t based on a feeling or karma but years of studying film, analyzing statistics, and...Did we have to show that clip...
Welcome to RideThePine.com , Let’s Talk Sports!
The biggest news coming out of the Super Bowl is the fact that Christina Aquilera messed up the words to the Star Spangled Banner. Is it bad that I didn’t even realize that she botched probably the watermark moment of her career. Why, because I was too busy trying to figure out what happened to Christina Aquilera? You remember this Christina Aquilera? Christina Aquilera looked like someone who ate Christina Aquilera.
And don’t even get me started on the half-time show. Those other Black Eyed Peas just kept getting in the way of Fergie.
Anyway the game had some more highlights like the stagged popcorn feeding of Cameron Diaz and A-Rod. Are there two people more desperate for attention.
Can someone get John Madden a freaking smartphone. That flip phone looked so old that I can’t figure out if he was trying to text or playing an intense game of snake?
The Super Bowl was exciting which is all that you can ask, but there has been a lot of debate on whether the Packers won the game or the Steelers lost the game. And this is what you will decide on this week’s poll on RideThePine.com . Let us know what you think was more true about the game.
I want to let everyone know the results of our most participated poll ever. Do you think that tennis star Kim Clijsters is hot. 64% of you think she is not!
Here are a couple of things to check out while you’re on the pine...
* Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Michael Vick received an honorary Key to the City in Dallas during Super Bowl week. I’m an Eagles fan but as long as I have to start a conversation about Michael Vick with, “I’m a animal lover.” It probably is too soon, to give him some type of honor outside of football. I don’t think he has even received a key to Philadelphia, so why their arch-rivals would do this is beyond me.
* New England Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady is your NFL MVP becoming the first player in history to win by a unanimous decision, which that fact alone is pretty amazing. Think any Patriots fans out there still wishing they held on to Matt Cassel instead.
* The Cleveland Cavaliers losing streak is at 25, which is an all-time record in the NBA. And nothing sums up how bad their play is than their lose to Dallas when they had no idea how much time was left on the clock and couldn’t a final shot off.
