From South Carolina %ndash A new report published in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology finds that copper surfaces in the ICU can greatly reduce health care-acquired infections. Researchers randomly assigned ICU patients at three hospitals to receive traditional care or to be placed in a room with copper-based bed rails, tables, IV poles and call buttons. Results showed that patients in the copper surfaced room were much less likely to develop methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) than those in traditional hospital rooms.

[ VIDEO ] This video from our local NBC affiliate's The Ward Room shows Obama in a debate at his best. I barely remember that field and would have a hard time seeing how he would not stand out. The only person I that stage I'm sure people may remember is former IL state comptroller Dan Hynes. That might be in part because now he's President, but certainly he was able to stick out from the crowd to eke out a victory back in the Democratic primary for US Senate in 2004.
In any event here's the caption that came with the video: " Think Barack Obama's debate performance against Mitt Romney was an anomaly? That's how he often does it. Take a look at this clip from the Senate debates in 2004 for a peek at his style. "
Well compare this to his performance on Wednesday night against his Republican opponent for President Mitt Romney. This video is a mere snapshot though of almost 3 mins of footage from that particular debate. What I've linked to is the whole hour and a half of the debate where to many observers the President got his clocked cleaned.
Can we expect much of the same in Obama's next debate against Romney?

Seeing as the weather has turned and the snow has stopped with the skies clear and some sunshine out it's time to look at our political situation during the recent blizzard.
I've noted on this blog once that the 1979 blizzard cost a past mayor and election thanks to his activity during that blizzard. Chicago didn't work that year during the blizzard and Mayor Bilandic gave way to Mayor Jane Byrne.
What's different in 2011 is that now Chicago's Mayoralty is an open seat now. We may well want a mayor who will be able to respond decisively when the weather turned the way that it had over the last 24+ hours. Well here's an answer via NBC Chicago's Ward Room :

Chico has been out on the streets of Chicago clearing snow drifts and helping folks in need by pushing stalled cars and offering warmth.
Chico released of video of himself helping push a car out a snowbank, and will be leading a team of shovelers at 2201 N. Maplewood in Logan Square, starting at noon.
Not to be outdone, Rahm Emanuel hit the streets of Logan Square to clear snow as well.

With the closing of New Orleans famous public Charity Hospital and numerous small neighborhood clinics and public health care facilities, and with the displacement of thousands of workers who made city health services run on a day to day, bedpan to bedpan basis, many of the residents who found their way back to post-Hurricane New Orleans also found themselves without access to any health care whatsoever; in particular, services for women, like battered women's shelters, birthcontrol, abortion access and prenatal care are inaccessible to many. However, Common Ground Free Clinics are growing in a local and national combined effort of volunteerism to serve the under and unserved residents whose health needs have increased while services have disappeared.
"After Hurricane Katrina flooded New Orleans, the humanitarian disaster followed exacerbated by existing poverty, racism and the scandalous emergency response and relief operations. Malik Rahima and Sharon Johnson - community activists in Algiers put a call out for a progressive response and for emergency medics to run a first aid station and help develop a permanent health clinic." (commongroundrelief.org) And so began Common Ground's Free Health Clinic in the space of a donated mosque in the Algiers neighborhood of Orleans Parish, just across the river from downtown New Orleans.
This week (and ongoing), teams of volunteers from around the country converge to gut a donated house in the flood-devastated 9th Ward area of New Orleans and build another free clinic while simultaneously, the city of New Orleans responds to the devastion by claiming eminent domain over thousands of homes in the Lower 9th Ward and prepares to bulldoze these homes without proper notification or participation from residents. Hundreds of volunteers from around the country and from within the local community have come together in New Orleans to spend time gutting and building clinics from the ground up, serving patients and organizing to make these clinics happen.
Here is an update on the common ground free clinics with Ellen Catalinotto, volunteer nurse mid-wife at the Algiers Health Clinic.
