American Experience | Clinton | Preview | PBS
(Coming Feb. 20th, 2012) www.pbs.org From draft dodging to the Dayton Accords, from Monica Lewinsky to a balanced budget, the presidency of William Jefferson Clinton veered between sordid scandal and grand achievement. In CLINTON, the latest installment in the critically acclaimed and successful series of presidential biographies, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE explores the fascinating story of an American president who rose from a broken childhood in Arkansas to become one of the most successful politicians in modern American history and one of the most complex and conflicted characters to ever stride across the public stage. It recounts a career full of accomplishment and rife with scandal, a marriage that would make history and create controversy and a presidency that would define the crucial and transformative period between the fall of the Berlin Wall and 9/11. It follows Clinton across his two terms as he confronted some of the key forces that would shape the future, including partisan political warfare and domestic and international terrorism, and struggled, with uneven success, to define the role of American power in a post-Cold War world. Most memorably, it explores how Clinton's conflicted character made history, even as it enraged his enemies and confounded his friends. The program features unprecedented access to scores of Clinton insiders including White House Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers, White House Counsel Bernard Nussbaum, White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta ... An Irish government tribunal of inquiry into institutions responsible for cruel and inhumane treatment of children is in session. In the foyer, James X, one of those children, now a man anxiously prepares to offer the testimony which he hopes will unshackle him from the past. As he waits, James is confronted with the fact that the tribunal he is about to go before is part of the very same system that made prisoners of children like him and sighting this truth prompts him to tell the story that will really, finally set him free.
In the last decade, the Catholic Church and State institutions in Ireland and throughout the world have been the center of an emerging secret history. That history involves the sexual abuse and torment of tens of thousands of vulnerable children. This is the human story of one of those children who is trying to emerge from a place of darkness into the light -- a light in which the human spirit is allowed to triumph into its full magnificence.
Gabriel James Byrne is an Irish actor, film director, film producer, writer, cultural ambassador and audiobook narrator. His acting career began in the Focus Theatre before he joined Londo's Royal Court Theatre in 1979. Byrne's screen debut came in the Irish soap opera The Riordans and the spin-off show Bracken. He has now starred in over 35 feature films, such as The Usual Suspects, Miller's Crossing and Stigmata, in addition to writing two. Byrne's producing credits include the Academy Award-nominated In the Name of the Father. More recently, he has received much critical acclaim for his role as Dr. Paul Weston in the HBO drama In Treatment.

GUY RITCHIE (Director) directed the smash hit “Sherlock Holmes,” which opened on Christmas Day 2009 and went on to gross more than $516 million worldwide. Successfully bringing Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famed detective to the big screen for a new generation, the acclaimed film starred Robert Downey Jr. in the title role and Jude Law as Dr. Watson.
Prior to “Sherlock Holmes,” Ritchie wrote, directed and produced the widely praised crime comedy “RocknRolla,” featuring an international ensemble cast, including Gerard Butler, Tom Wilkinson, Thandie Newton, Mark Strong, Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, Jeremy Piven and Chris Bridges. The film premiered at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival before opening in the UK at the top of the box office. “RocknRolla” went on to win the Empire Award for Best British Film.
Ritchie recently partnered with Lionel Wigram to form a new production company, which has a first-look deal with Warner Bros. He also has several writing and directing projects in development, including the epic “The Siege of Malta,” as well as “The Gamekeeper,” based on a Virgin comic book series he created.
Born in London, Ritchie started in the UK film industry in 1993 as a runner on Wardour Street. He worked his way up the ranks to directing music videos and commercials before writing and directing his first short film, “The Hard Case,” in 1995.
Ritchie made his writing and directing feature film debut with “Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels.” Made on a modest budget of $1 million, the film became one of the UK’s biggest box office hits and made its U.S. premiere at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. The London Film Critics Circle named Ritchie the British Screenwriter of the Year for the feature, which also received a BAFTA Award nomination for Best British Film. “Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels” also went on to spawn a series of British gangster flicks and helped launch the Hollywood careers of several British actors, including Jason Statham, Vinnie Jones and Jason Flemyng.
Ritchie followed with the 2000 hit “Snatch,” which he wrote and directed. The film featured an ensemble cast, including Brad Pitt, Dennis Farina, Jason Statham, Vinnie Jones, Alan Ford, Lennie James and Benicio Del Toro. In addition to being a box office success, “Snatch” also brought Ritchie an Empire Award for Best British Director, firmly establishing him as a new visionary in the film industry.
Following “Snatch,” Ritchie co-wrote and directed “Swept Away,” a remake of the 1974 Italian classic “Travolti da un insolito destino nell’azzurro mare d’agosto.” The romantic comedy starred Madonna, Adrianno Giannini, Bruce Greenwood, Elizabeth Banks and Jeanne Tripplehorn.
Ritchie continued to explore new challenges with the edgy crime thriller “Revolver,” which premiered at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival. Jason Statham, Ray Liotta, Vincent Pastore and Outkast’s Andre Benjamin starred in the film, which was later released in the U.S. in December 2007.
In addition to Ritchie’s feature film work, he has helmed a number of acclaimed shorts. He directed “Star,” a short film featured in Series 1 of the popular BMW series “The Hire.” He also collaborated with Nike to create the short “Take It to the Next Level,” which follows the rise of an up-and-coming Dutch footballer and featured some of the industry’s best players. The project brought Ritchie a Golden Lion at the 2008 Cannes International Advertising Festival.

Al-Mutawa came up with the concept of The 99: a team of superheroes, each one exemplifying one of the 99 attributes of Allah. His motivations were both entrepreneurial and idealistic %mdash The 99 would exemplify the Islamic virtues of compassion, understanding, and tolerance -- qualities not often associated with Islam by the West. Within the Islamic world, Al-Mutawa hoped these new role models would counter the growing tide of political and religious extremism. As a business, it was a daunting task %mdash comics were relatively unknown in the Arab market and those that existed were all Western imports. Al-Mutawa managed to raise $7 million in initial capital from 54 investors across four continents and brought together a team of comic book veterans to create The 99. The first issue was released during Ramadan 2006 and although it enjoyed widespread critical success, The 99 immediately came under suspicion from religious leaders. The comic was banned in Saudi Arabia and there were threats of a fatwa forbidding The 99. As Al-Mutawa battles the cultural gatekeepers (both anointed and self-anointed) to a draw Al-Mutawa becomes a forceful advocate for an Islam based on open-mindedness and individual thought. Marc Eliot on Reagan in Hollywood
At FreedomFest this July, Reason's Matt Welch spoke with Marc Eliot, author of Reagan: The Hollywood Years. The book chronicles Ronald Reagan's journey from sportscaster to actor to union president to politician. Unlike critics who make sport of Reagan's Hollywood output (Bedtime for Bonzo, anyone?), Eliot documents how backlot politics helped transform the once-proud "New Deal Democrat" into the embodiment of Goldwater conservatism. His tenure as head of the Screen Actors Guild was punctuated by episodes such as the time when he received death threats by one of Al Capone's henchmen over a union dispute and his starring role in the negotiations that led to actors receiving residuals. And while Reagan's film career ultimately petered out, he was for a time among the highest-paid contract actors of his day. Shot by Jim Epstein and Zach Weissmueller. Edited by Anthony L. Fisher. About 9.15 minutes. Held each July in Las Vegas, FreedomFest is attended by around 2000 limited-government enthusiasts and libertarians a year. Moral Markets: Paul Zak discusses Oxytocin, Trade, and Human Nature
"Our biology really tells us that, at our hearts, we're libertarians." So says Paul J. Zak, who spoke recently at Reason Foundation's annual Reason Weekend. Zak is the founding director of the Center for Neuroeconomics Studies at Claremont Graduate University and is credited with the first published use of the term "neuroeconomics," a new discipline that integrates neuroscience and economics. Zak discusses his "oxytocin argument," which he explores in the book Moral Markets: The Critical Role of Values in the Economy. In 2004, Zak's lab discovered that the chemical oxytocin (best known for inducing labor in women) allows us to determine whom to trust in situations that require exchange. That's the same trust that makes trade possible and underpins modern economies. Approximately 14 minutes-long. Filmed by Alex Manning and Paul Detrick; Editd by Hawk Jensen. Lifting The Veil Barack Obama And The Failure Of Capitalist Democracy
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 02:50:45 03/21/11
Sub-headed “Barack Obama and the failure of capitalist democracy”, this film explores the historical role of the Democratic Party as the “graveyard of social movements”, the massive influence of corporate finance in elections, the absurd disparities of wealth in the United States, the continuity and escalation of neocon policies under Obama, the insufficiency of mere voting as a path to reform, and differing conceptions of democracy itself. "Lifting the Veil is the long overdue film that powerfully, definitively, and finally exposes the deadly 21st century hypocrisy of U.S. internal and external policies, even as it imbues the viewer with a sense of urgency and an actualized hope to bring about real systemic change while there is yet time for humanity and this planet. See this film!" -Larry Pinkney Editorial Board Member & Columnist The Black Commentator Original interview footage derives from Noam Chomsky, Michael Parenti, Michael Albert, John Stauber (PR Watch), Sharon Smith (Historian), William I. Robinson (Editor, Critical Globalization Studies), Morris Berman (Author, Dark Ages America), and famed black panther Larry Pinkney. Non-original interviews/lectures include Michael Hudson, Paul Craig Roberts, Ted Rall, Richard Wolff, Glen Ford, Lewis Black, Glenn Greenwald, George Carlin, Gerald Cliente, Chris Hedges, John Pilger, Bernie Sanders, Sheldon Wollin and Martin Luther King. “Lifting the Veil is a major contribution to political documentary. ; It teaches everyone from the uninitiated to the most sophisticated the true nature of the American government... It covers the issues clearly and succinctly, from the opening narrative through to its stirring conclusion.” -Ralph Poynter lynne stewart defense committee new abolitionist movement "The best political film I've seen to date. A must watch if you want to understand who and what Obama is about, as well as this hypocrisy they call democracy." Kiilu Nyasha Independent Journalist and former member of the Black Panther Party "Noble is brilliantly pioneering the new film-making -- incisive analysis, compelling sound and footage, fearless and independent reporting, and the aggregation of the best information out there into powerful, educational and free online feature films – all on a shoestring budget. His films educate and inform while building the movements needed for real change at the grassroots. Noble's films are dedicated to democracy; they fan the flames of non-violent, people-powered revolution." -John Stauber, Founder, PR Watch
