Studies conducted by the California Healthy Marriages Coalition indicate that children in single-parent family environments perform poorly in school and experience behavior problems far more than children who grow up with two parents in the home. In Part 2 of Making Our Schools Safer...we decided to discuss the Family Structure in more detail. Still, we found that the majority of people stood firm in their position that the family is the essential part of a child's conduct in school. But some said other factors come into play and the school system can't be blamed.

Having a supportive family structure really helped motivate him to pursue a degree. Neither of his parents completed college, yet they demanded Henry attend and finish some kind of degree program. Even though his journey has had high and low points, his father has been especially supportive to keep him motivated to finish. Henry believes that by completing college, he can serve as a role model to his family and friends, and hopes that his younger relatives make the committment to go to school.
