Love Your Enemies, Huh?
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 07:00:00 05/10/12
A few years ago, a documentary called Collision was made where Douglas Wilson debated Christopher Hitchens on Is Christianity Good for the World? Hundreds of hours of footage was shot and edited down to 90 minutes of solid debate and conversation. The clip you see above didn't make into that 90 minutes. Consider it deleted scenes. This is the first time it's being released, and we have it here for you to learn what it means and looks like to make a defense for your faith.
___
Notes from Douglas Wilson
In this clip, Christopher is taking issue with the heart and soul of Christian living, which is love. This is Christopher at the top of his enfant terrible form %mdashattacking love! He will be kicking puppies next, trying to get all the Christians to gasp and go white in the face.
Love for God and neighbor is the summation of all the law and the prophets. Love describes the way God is, and the command to love is really a command to be like God. To obey it (by grace) is to bring yourself into conformity with ultimate reality. But Christopher didn%rsquot like being told what to do, and he especially didn%rsquot like being commanded to love. He regarded this kind of love as an extraordinary bit of luck, if it happens to you, but it could not be a rule to be followed. And he reserved a special ire for the command that Scripture gives to us when we are told to love our enemies . That is something that Christopher flatly refused to do.
But let us stop and reflect for a moment. One of Christopher%rsquos favorite tricks was that of saying shocking things, and this was designed to get us to stop thinking about what was just said. In the previous outtake from Collision , his complaint against God was that God treated his enemies in exactly the way that Christopher was insisting (now) that our enemies must be treated. In short, in the previous clip, how dare God send his enemies to hell? In this clip, how dare God interfere with our attempts to send them there?
Cornelius Van Til once used the illustration of a rebellious child who needs to sit on his father%rsquos lap in order to slap him. In order to attack God, a rebel must pick some place to stand (which necessarily must be an attribute of God%rsquos considered in isolation) in order to be able to be critical of another of God%rsquos attributes. These two video clips provide a perfect illustration of the technique. In this clip, Christopher uses the doctrine of justice to attack God%rsquos words concerning love. In the previous clip, sitting at the same table, he was using the reality of God%rsquos love to attack God%rsquos words concerning justice.
G.K. Chesterton once said that it began to look as though Christianity were not big enough to encompass any errors, but rather that any stick was good enough to beat Christianity with. Learn more about apologetics

NPR Music Field Recordings: Amadou & Mariam
There's not a lot in New York City that looks much like Bamako, the capital city of Mali, but there are pockets uptown where a West African might feel a little closer to home. With increasing numbers of immigrants to Harlem from countries like Mali, Senegal, Guinea, Gambia and beyond, jewelry shops sell the beautiful, bright gold twisted hoop earrings traditionally worn by Fulani women; men stride along the street wearing the elegant, flowing robes called grands boubous; and restaurants sell bissap, the sweet cold drink made from hibiscus flowers that's beloved across the region. One major gathering point for Africans and non-Africans alike in this neighborhood is The Shrine, a nightclub and restaurant whose clout belies its small size. So when Malian breakout superstars Amadou and Mariam happened to find themselves with an extra day in New York recently, we invited them up to The Shrine to sing a quick, unplugged set. As it happens, we discovered that The Shrine was a familiar locale for this husband-and-wife team: They had just shot a video there earlier in the week. (Great minds think alike, we suppose.) But the intimate setting proved to be the perfect place for a stripped-down performance of the song "Wily Kataso," from the pair's new album, Folila. The album version features TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone, but here, it was just their two powerful voices, Amadou's blues-soaked guitar and an incredibly catchy melody that lit up The Shrine. 'Short Circuit' Reboot To Feature Edgier, More Menacing Robot

Johnny 5 is alive again with recent announcements that the Short Circuit franchise is undergoing a reboot. Keep it programmed right here; ClevverMovies has the input. According to the LA Times, Dimension Films is currently developing a new script for the classic 1980's comedy about an experimental military robot that develops human emotions and self-awareness after being struck by lightning. Tim Hill, of Hop,Alvin & the Chipmunks & Spongebob fame, will direct and write. Hill's experience with family movies and his knowledge of modern technology makes him the perfect choice to recreate this classic story. Quote, "If you look at kids and how they adopt machinery, it's just getting tight and tighter...we're just becoming more connected to our machines. That's why I think this can say more about our relationship with technology than the original ever did." When asked about the relationship between Johnny 5 and the animal-lover that he befriends, Hill states that he will reinvent that part with either a pre-teen or teenager cast in the role because it will make the film more family-friendly as well as add a wish-fulfillment element that was missed in the original film. While Johnny 5 will retain the childlike qualities that made him so loveable in the first place, Hill plans to make the film slightly edgier and more dangerous and add more adult themes to the film so it ... The weeklong Vans Wängl Tängl Presented By G-Shock Contest-ival in Mayrhofen, Austria showcased the highest level of snowboarding the event has ever seen, epic weather conditions, innovative skateboarding, nightly parties, live music and life-long memories for all who attended the 10th Anniversary of this rider driven event.
Snowboarders Eric Willett, Iouri Podladtchikov and Arthur Longo made the trek from the Winter X Games in Tignes to join the laid back vibe of the unique team-format Vans Wängl Tängl snow event and took a break from their rigorous schedules to ride the perfect conditions of the Vans Penken Park.
Peetu Piiroinen’s team topped the podium with a first place finish for the “Triple Cocks.”
Skaters mingled with musicians and snowboarders to check out the Pop-Up gallery hosted by Looking Sideways, which featured works from snowboarders and skateboarders Danny Wainwright, Blaise Rosenthal, Corey Smith, and French, Danny Larsen and others.
The highest level of skating went down on the Mega-Mini-Ramp with Jake Collins dominating a “Cash for Tricks” Best Trick contest. Day two of the skate event featured a knock-out style team format that awarded innovation and combo tricks. Nassim Guammaz and Daan Van Der Linden amazed the crowd with creative skating and split the prize money with the other stand out teams in the top 4 finals, which included Josh “Manhead” Young & Andy Scott, Martino Cattaneo & Kevin Blaser, and Micky Iglesias & Phil Zwijsen.
M.O.P and Roots Manuva brought their legitimate hip hop legacy to the streets of Mayrhofen and performed a free show for nearly 1000 fans in the Music Pavillion.
After a decade of staying true to the Ästhetiker and Off The Wall spirit, this event continues to be one of a kind, an event that creates memories and defies the boundaries of the typical contest. It’s rider-driven, for the riders, skaters, artists and musicians. It’s an event that no one wants to miss.

Elliott BROOD have always been time travellers. The Toronto trio writes songs steeped in history that feel very present. They've done their share of actual travelling, too, these musical troubadours, acoustic guitars and banjos slung over their sharp suits as they barnstormed across Canada and beyond. For the new album Days Into Years it was century-old stories encountered an ocean away that brought them closest to home. On the band's first European tour back in 2007 they found themselves driving through the backroads of France. Vocalist Mark Sasso, guitarist Casey Laforet and drummer Stephen Pitkin, all enthusiasts of military history, raised on the harrowing stories of Canadians in World War 1, were simply looking to avoid the toll highways. Then they came upon a sign for a WW1 military cemetery.
"We'd been driving through Belgium and France, always passing by these historical war places and we decided to pull over and take this one in," recalls Mark. "We saw all these Canadian names, and it really resonated with us, these young guys that had gone off to war. I knew all about it from reading books, but when you actually visit a place where the battles were, it hits you a lot harder. We said, 'We need to write a record about it.'" Days Into Years is Elliott BROOD's third full-length recording, the follow-up to 2008's Polaris Prize short-listed Mountain Meadows. Like its predecessors, including the 2004 debut EP Tin Type and 2006's Juno-nominated Ambassador, it mines real history to connect songs that are deeply personal in a cinematic, narrative way. Unfolding like a series of movie scenes, it looks to the future by starting with the past. Opening track "Lindsay" invites you into process of revisiting one's life while cleaning out an old family home. "If I Get Old" daydreams of making it through difficult times, be they in the trenches or a sickbed, and finding a nice place in the country to live out one's final moments. Days Into Years presents these reflections as a celebration of life, particularly on the perfect summer single "Northern Air", a love letter both to the rural Ontario landscape and the memory of a departed friend whose spirit now resides there.
Recorded with co-producer John Critchley at Green Door Studios in Toronto and Avening Town Hall (a former army barracks) in rural Ontario, the album showcases a more amped up Elliott BROOD that will put the knell to the "death country" tag that described their early work. Now, the roof-raising rhythm stomp and mandolin collides with luscious harmonies, piano and, for the first time, electric guitar in a mix Casey admits is "loud, heavy and rock 'n' roll." Since forming in 2002, Elliot BROOD has become a Canadian music institution. (The 2004 campus radio hit "Oh, Alberta!" remains a national treasure.) But after touring with acts like Wilco, Blue Rodeo, Corb Lund and the Sadies, playing festivals across North America, Europe and Australia and scoring the 2010 film Grown-Up Movie Star (for which they earned a Gemini nomination for Best Original Song), the band now also has a global presence. With Days Into Years they will bring their music, and of one of the greatest Canadian stories, to the world. Elliott BROOD are Casey Laforet (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass pedals, bass guitar, mandolin, banjo, lap steel, vocals) Mark Sasso (banjo, guitar, harmonica, vocals) and Stephen Pitkin (percussion, drums, piano, vocals).
