TEDxUSC - Jose Antonio Rosa - Hope and Innovation Among the Next Four Billion Psychologist Jose Antonio Rosa seeks to understand innovation in its purest form. In his research, he lived amongst the four billion people who sustain on less than $2 a day, communities we know little about, and witnessed the way these people make being innovative, experimental, and creative a way of life and incorporate modern market practices into the business of scavenging, whether its testing products or coming up with guarantees. Rosa explains where hope, healthy delusion, and creative deviance come into play when innovating by hand. Public Radio International's Julie Burstein, creator of the award-winning program Studio 360, along with its host Kurt Andersen, offers a rare, fascinating glimpse into some of the 21st century's greatest creative minds%mdashfrom Yo-Yo Ma and Robert Plant to Mira Nair and Chuck Close, to David Milch and Joyce Carol Oates, to Rosanne Cash and beyond. Fans of Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, Daniel Pink's A Whole New Mind, Rosamund Zander's The Art of Possibility, and Lynda Barry's What It Is will be enthralled and electrified by this unique look at the creative process of the world's most talented and prolific artists. Creativity is an elusive subject. We enjoy its fruits%mdashmovies, novels, paintings, songs%mdashbut rarely are we privy to what happens in the creative process. In Spark, Julie Burstein traces the roots of some of the twenty-first century's most influential and creative thinkers, including Joyce Carol Oates, Yo-Yo Ma, David Milch, Isabel Allende, and Joshua Redman. Burstein pulls back the curtain to reveal the sources of these artists' inspiration and the processes that bring their work into being. "These artists may not change lead into gold," Burstein writes, "but they lift materials from their familiar contexts, combining, reshaping, transforming them into works of art that change the way we see the world." Spark is an invaluable resource for the aspiring writer and artist, but the need for creativity extends well beyond the world of paintbrushes and typewriters ... TEDxSheffield - Brendan Stone - The Power of Story Dr. Brendan Stone - The Power of Story Brendan Stone is a Senior Academic Fellow at The University of Sheffield. Much of his work focuses on themes of wellbeing, communities, social and cultural capital, and the development of creative approaches to understand and combat social exclusion. He has considerable experience in working with people who have longstanding mental health problems; his 'Storying Sheffield' project attempts to empower individuals to renegotiate the stories which define them. Brendan's work is based around the idea of the 'porous university', in which barriers to access are carefully removed to foster a mutually productive exchange with the city and the wider region.
