YOW! 2011: Simon Peyton-Jones - Closer to Nirvana
[LESS INFO] 25 VIEWS | ADDED 19:52:04 12/15/11
I caught up with Simon Peyton-Jones , author of the Glasgow Haskell Compiler (GHC) and a key contributor to the Haskell functional programming language, at YOW! 2011 . Simon is a pure functional guy. That said, he's OK with side effects as long as you can control them (so, monads are great!).
Simon works at Microsoft as a research scientist in MSR. Simon's work on Haskell is legendary and the language has seen an increase in usage over the years and a steady evolution toward being not only a general purpose, strongly-typed functional programming language, but also a practical one. No longer is Haskell suited only for academic experimentation (though this continues to be an important aspect of the language—in fact, it's one of the very effective ways the language is pushed forward). As Simon says, Haskell is like a laboratory in which to test new functional ideas and novel language constructs.
One of the very interesting aspects of Haskell is how the surface language (so, the syntax you write) is boiled down to a very small intermediate language, System F . Simon spends a nice chunk of time in this conversation explaining this. It's a rather excellent approach. We only touch on C-- , but I have a feeling I'll be interviewing Simon again in the future.
How has the language evolved over the years? What's Simon working on these days (besides evolving Haskell, he's helping to make general purpose computing education for the masses much better!)? What's next? What are the big problems he and others are tackling with respect to moving Haskell forward? As always, it's a real pleasure to converse with and learn from Simon. His passion, enthusiasm, and intelligence are infectious (well, maybe not the intelligence part—you're born with the smarts you have. So, I didn't get smarter by talking with Simon, but I sure learned a lot!). Very few people are able to explain complex concepts in ways mere mortals can understand and assimilate. Simon is one of these people.

The YOW! Developer Conference offers outstanding opportunities to learn more about the latest practices, technologies, and methodologies for building innovative software solutions as well as the chance to meet and network with international software experts and other talented developers in Australia. Thanks to Dave Thomas and the event's excellent staff - Mary Catherine (MC), Lisa, Aino, Melissa , and others - for inviting me to this excellent pure developer event and thanks to all of the speakers for letting me take some of their time to record conversations for Channel 9. If you live in Australia, or aren't too far away, or just like to travel (who doesn't?), then you need to go to this yearly event. It's outstanding. There are many great developers down under. That's for sure. The speakers are exceptional—Dave and team set a high bar!

This is a Lytro light field camera, and its anodized aluminum and silicone skin hides an engineering feat %mdash a proprietary sensor that the firm claims can capture 11 million rays of light instantly. That's paired to an 8x zoom lens with an f/2 aperture and eleven elements, plus a glass touchscreen around back, which allows you to touch any portion of the image to refocus on that part of the scene. [LESS INFO] 7 VIEWS | ADDED 06:00:05 07/12/11
As we've discussed in Moxie Mo Show episode 214 , Google+ (Plus) has exploded in popularity and now it's nearly impossible to get an invite to Google's first, successful social network... until now! Plus, what does Apple have up its sleeve coming this September? Could be some BIG news.
Apple's September Event: Launching 3 Big Products?
For the sanity of our Moxie Mo Show fans, the Moxie Mo doesn't cover every Apple rumor that comes out; otherwise we'd be covering nothing but iPhone and iPad rumors. That said, major sources have began reporting the same "rumors" which now lead us to believe Apple may have a huge event coming in September. We already know Apple's iOS 5 will be released to every iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch owner in September. Guess what else? A new iPhone 5 AND a new iPad HD . Details inside!
Google+ (Plus) Gets So Popular - How Can I Get Invited to Join?
We weren't kidding when we told you Google was at war with Facebook , Twitter and any other social network around - Google+ is the hottest thing since the iPhone arrived and that's no exaggeration. Will it catch up to be the Facebook in a few years? Most definitely. Why? We show you. So, the Moxie Mo is giving away INVITES to join Google+ which is still in private beta. Want an invite? Announcing the Official Release of Rx!
[LESS INFO] 25 VIEWS | ADDED 16:00:00 06/29/11
You've learned a lot about Rx (Reactive Extensions) on C9 over the years. You've seen Rx go from incubation stage to DevLabs project to having a happy home on the MSDN Data Developer Center .
Today, we're very pleased to announce that Rx is now officially official with the final V1 release!
Rx V1 will ship as a stable release with professionally-written technical documentation, developer samples and...ready? Product support!!
Since Rx is written and maintained by Erik Meijer's team you can imagine that there will continue to be innovation and experimentation at a quick pace. The Rx cutting edge will manifest itself as experimental releases . The real-world-developer-tested innovations in the experimental releases will most likely find their way into subsequent stable releases, which are the bits you'll want to build your event stream processing empire on top of.
The experimental releases will allow you to see and touch where the technology is heading, as well as help the team go in the right direction, as you have already done. Without developers using Rx in the real world and providing feedback to the Rx team, it is unlikely that Rx would be in the shape that it is today. Thank you!!
Here, I catch up with Rx developers Wes Dyer and Bart De Smet to get more information (and to see if I can get Wes and Bart writing on the whiteboard at the same time ). Tune in,
Congratulations to the Rx team!!

301 - Creating Web Content with Hype [Trailer]
[LESS INFO] 37 VIEWS | ADDED 18:05:00 06/09/11
Want to create beautiful animated or interactive web content? The latest and greatest technologies that allow you to do just that are HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript - but perhaps that all sounds very complicated! However, If you do adopt these technologies, your content will be playable on most modern browsers, as well as the iPhone and iPad.
But how to get to grips with all that coding? Well the good news is you don’t have to.
This week’s tutorial is all about Hype, a brand new tool that allows you to create amazing web content, without a single line of code. Just drag in images, videos and animate them using simple keyframes using the Hype user interface. Add scenes and buttons to make it interactive, then generate the required code to include in your webpages, or even publish directly to Dropbox. No previous web development skills required.
It really is amazing what can be achieved using HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript. These latest technologies allow you to create beautiful animated and interactive web content, with the benefit of your content being accessible from most modern browsers and mobile devices.
Previously, you would need skills in Adobe Flash or Dreamweaver to create this sort of content, something that would required in depth technical knowledge and web development skills. Even with these tools and the required skills, content generated with these proprietary tools could not be displayed on the latest iOS devices. The iPad/iPhone and iPod touch have excluded Flash playback, relying instead on standards based technologies such as HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript.
These new technologies are capable of displaying some amazing visual tricks such as transforms, reflections and other effects, all without taxing the processor and affording a wide range of support on many devices and browsers.
The problem is, how to learn these new technologies?
Well with Hype, you don’t need to!
Hype is a new application that allows you to create simple or complex animated and interactive graphics using simple drag and drop. Just create some text and drop an image on the scene. Then use a simple timeline and keyframes to animate the text and graphics as you need. Fade in, move around the scene, all easily accomplished. Add additional scenes and buttons to create fully interactive content, all without a single line of code.
Once you’ve created your content, preview it directly in your browser, without leaving the application.
Publishing your content is a snip. Just export to a file and all the required HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript code and supporting files are generated for you. Just copy into any existing webpages and upload to the web and you’re done. Or, Export to Dropbox and see your content published to the web instantly, Hype even provides the links to the newly published files to send via email.
It really is that easy.
This week’s tutorial takes you through the basics of using Hype, with plenty of examples on how to create stunning web content.

MM211: iOS 5, Mac OS X Lion and iCloud: What To Know
[LESS INFO] 7 VIEWS | ADDED 05:48:39 06/07/11
As the Moxie Mo Show accurately predicted last week , Steve Jobs and his Apple leadership took the stage at today's WWDC 2011 opening presentation . A lot was announced at this event, and we've got the major highlights of iOS 5 for your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, the next big OS for Macs (Mac OS X Lion) and the much anticipated iCloud - what is it and how does it affect you?
First of all, we couldn't do this show if it weren't for YOUR support . If you want the best backup software solution that works in the background, easy to set up, backs up all of your files to a secure, safe location and you never have to worry about it, use our promo code MOXIEMO at Mozy.com ! Mozy.com is one of the leading backup solutions for individuals as well as corporations! Check out Mozy Home and save 15% off by using MOXIEMO at checkout.
Mac OS X Lion Preview - Lots of BIG Changes: With over 250 changes coming to Apple's next major OS (10.7 - Mac OS X Lion), there's no doubt our Macs will never be the same once this comes out. The Moxie Mo Show goes over the moxiest of the 250 features that will knock your socks off - these "top features" will truly change the way you use your Mac computer (or wish you had one!)
iOS5 - iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch's new OS: No, a new iPhone wasn't announced, but the next generation of its operating system, iOS 5, was announced with TONS of moxie features . How can the iPhone get any better? Revamped notifications via a Notification Center, Twitter full-integration (literally), a better Safari, News Stand, better Mail application, "all-in-one" iMessage app and a better way to take and edit pictures in a snap! Plus, great features for BOTH iPad 1 and iPad 2 and we'll show you why this new iOS 5 is a winner. The Moxie Mo Show describes the biggest features coming in iOS 5 that will make your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch completely "moxie-fied." When is it coming and how will you get (hint, hint - no more cords!) - we'll tell you in the episode!
iCloud - Sync Everything to All Devices? Huh? So we've been waiting for this announcement for years, many of us believing it would occur last year at WWDC 2010. But, as we accurately predicted in Moxie Mo Show 210 , Apple has officially announced (and launched) its iCloud service - syncing all of your files, documents, photos, calendars, mail and music all "in the cloud" - so what does this really mean and how will it affect you? How does this change iTunes for good? Just wait until you see what iCloud is about.
Big News - Thanks to Lionel Archuleta, our wonderful Moxie Mo Show App developer, we have an upgraded newer version of the Moxie Mo Show! The best part, if you already have the iPhone or iPad Moxie Mo Show App, simply open the app and it will automatically ask you to refresh to the latest version! We've added some great new features , so make sure you stay on top of all things MOXIE and download our FREE iPhone and iPad app !

For example, you can look up commercials for games in the 1960s or stroll over to 1984 and see what was going on in the world of technology.
