Canada's PM Stephen Harper in China to Talk Trade
For more news and videos visit ➡ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ➡ http Add us on Facebook ➡ on.fb.me The Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is currently in China for talks on oil exports and trade. The visit can be seen as a change in attitude for Canada, which has a record of taking a hard stance on the Chinese regime's human rights abuses, as it looks as if economic ties between the two nations are warming. Harper said he still plans to bring up human rights issues during the trip. The Canadian Prime Minister's plane touched down in Beijing on Tuesday. It's the second time Stephen Harper has visited China since becoming Prime Minister, and he's on a mission to sell Canadian oil. Currently 97% of Canadian oil exports go to the United States, but with Obama's recent rejection of a pipeline carrying Canadian oil across the continental US, Harper is looking east to emerging markets in Asia and especially China. Harper is with an entourage of 40 Canadian business leaders who will be meeting Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao to discuss trade. NTD senior China commentator Wen Zhao says Canada's push to sell energy resources is coming at the right time for China. [Wen Zhao, Senior China Analyst]: "From last year to today, after incidents in Libya and Iran, the reliability of China's oil imports from the Middle East has been threatened. So for mainland China, they really need a stable and reliable provider of crude oil." An energy deal between the two countries will ... German Chancellor Angela Merkel Meets Hu Jintao for Talks
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me German Chancellor Angela Merkel held talks with Chinese Communist Party leader Hu Jintao and top legislator Wu Bangguo in Beijing on Friday. During her meeting with Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday, Merkel urged China to use its influence to persuade Iran to give up its nuclear program. Wen appeared to reject the pressure to do more on Iran, telling reporters later in the day that China objected to Western nations politicizing the "normal commercial relationship" it has with the Islamic Republic. Merkel is also expected to bid farewell to China's outgoing leaders, despite differences over human rights and democracy and issues like intellectual property theft. Both Hu and Wen are due to retire from their state posts in March 2013 and hand over power to successors, most likely led by current Vice President Xi Jinping. The next generation of leaders has not expressed different economic or trade policy views, and are expected to proceed cautiously once in power. The Chancellor will fly to the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou on Friday afternoon to attend a business forum... before wrapping up her trip to China on Saturday. Taiwan Hopes War History Will Entice Mainland Tourists
For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Follow us on Facebook ☛ me.lt The number of mainland Chinese taking tours of Taiwan is rising. Many Chinese are wanting to learn about the history surrounding the 1949 war between the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party... that led to the establishment of Taiwan. Taiwan hopes to increase tourist traffic from the Mainland by showcasing its wartime history. Thousands of visitors flock daily to the Taipei's Martyr's Shrine, where Kuomintang soldiers are commemorated for their fight against the Chinese Communist Party in 1949. The visit often sparks heated conversation for Mainlanders. [Liu Xia, Chinese Tourist]: "We had this exchange about when we were in school, how did the textbooks describe Kuomintang and the Communist Party, and we heard about how her text books talked about the history between Kuomintang and the Communist Party back then. At the same time, we also talked about our children's education now, after so many years, it is very different how they see the two parties. I think we are getting closer to what is true to history." Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou plans to strengthen ties with China, and has converted many places of war into places of tourism. This includes a small off-shore island called Matsu. President Ma is also adding a $558 million USD budget to boost Taiwanese tourism. Many Taiwanese locals see business opportunities in the increase of Chinese tourists. [Chou Yen ... Internet Freedom Seminar in Sweden
For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Follow us on Facebook ☛ me.lt While countries like China and Iran are busy suppressing internet freedom, Sweden supports projects protecting freedom of the internet. The Swedish government and NGO's have organized a seminar for companies that sell technology to repressive regimes. Our correspondent in Sweden has more. In Sweden both government and non-government organisations are addressing the issue of how to protect freedom on the internet. This week a seminar about Human Rights and the internet was held on "The Human Rights Days" in Stockholm. One participating company "Cisco" has been heavily criticised for selling hardware to the Chinese. Hardware that was used to by the regime to build up the so called "Golden Shield" which is controlling internet users in China. [Patrik F%aumlltstr%oumlm, Distinguished Consulting Engineer, Cisco]: "People talk about what we at Cisco sold and did like four years ago, did we have any discussion in the world at all about freedom of expression on the internet? No. Did we have any kind of discussion in the UN about freedom of expression on the internet. Not much. Now we can actually communicate and talk about it at conferences like this one in Stockholm, where we can discuss more and change. So of course all of us have changed our view and values and how to do things right." NGO participant "Supporting Human Rights in China" (SHRIC) has had experience of the censorship in ... He's especially concerned about economic cyber espionage. And he says that US companies who are hit with cyber attacks from China are afraid to speak out. Factories Hard at Work for Christmas
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ me.lt It may sound a bit early to talk about Christmas, but for Chinese factory workers, October is crunchtime to make sure all the holiday products are finished, and make it to shelves around the world on time. Although Christmas is still more than two months away, factories in China are working hard to prepare for the holiday season. September and October are the busiest months for manufacturing seasonal goods to meet shipping deadlines. To compensate for slow US and European markets, factory owner He Songping (not pronounced hee, more like huh) explains his methods. [He Songping, Co-owner, China Zhongsheng Crafts Co. Ltd.]: "Right now, because the global economy is not doing very well, our factory had to take steps early on to deal with this problem. We had to talk to our old customers earlier to try to find new business opportunities. Overall, for factories manufacturing Christmas goods, there is not too much of an effect on our sales." He and his brother employ over 200 workers, but recent inflation in China has made workers either harder to find or demanding higher wages. [Fu Chensong, Factory Worker]: "Of course, there is a difference (with inflation). Nowadays, I keep feeling that I don't have enough money to spend. After such a hard day of work I feel I don't have enough to survive. I feel that if the boss is making profits, he should improve the welfare ...
