The global environmental watchdog%mdashGreenpeace%mdashhas released its rankings for China's supermarkets to help consumers avoid stores that sell unsafe food. The best-ranked place to shop is Carrefour, and the worst ranked is Tesco. Amid a series of food safety scandals in China, Greenpeace has released its 2011 ranking of China's supermarkets. The aim is to help consumers avoid supermarkets that continue to sell unsafe food. This comes after a recent Greenpeace survey shows that most local fresh produce at five supermarkets in China contains pesticides. Some are banned or exceed legal limits. Last November, Greenpeace randomly sampled 35 items of fruits and vegetables from five supermarkets in Beijing, Chengdu, and Guangzhou. Thirty samples contain pesticides. Only 14 percent is pesticide-free. Greenpeace food and agriculture campaigner Wang Jing said, "With so many pesticides, it might seem impossible to find safe food." Wang said consumers' choice is the best deterrent: "If we choose not to buy unsafe food, then supermarkets won't sell them." According to Greenpeace, the best place to shop for pesticide-free food is Carrefour%mdashfollowed by Auchan and Shanghai City. US Payrolls Jump; Jobless Rate Drops
Feb. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Employment climbed more than forecast in January and the US jobless rate unexpectedly fell to the lowest in three years, casting doubt on whether the Federal Reserve can wait until 2014 before raising interest rates. The 243000 increase in payrolls was the most since April and exceeded all forecasts in a Bloomberg News survey, Labor Department figures showed in Washington. The unemployment rate dropped to 8.3 percent, the lowest since February 2009. Peter Cook and Michael McKee report on Bloomberg Television's "In the Loop."
