Haitian Earthquake Survivors Protest Over Slow Aid
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me It's been two years since the devastating earthquake hit Haiti. But quake victims say government and aid agencies have not delivered on their promises to help with the recovery effort. Nearly six thousand Haitians marched on Wednesday to remember the earthquake and protest against what they say is a slow recovery process. They say the government and aid organizations have not done enough to ensure the donations go to those who need them. [Otelier Herman, Coordinator, Center of Respect and Promotion of Human Rights]: "Two years after, nothing has been done in the poorest neighborhoods. As a citizen within the poor neighborhoods, we have found that there was not a policy for housing and that's why so many people have died." One day before the two-year anniversary of the disaster, Haitians peacefully wound their way through the streets of Port-au-Prince, wearing white t-shirts and straw hats to symbolize unity among the poorest. Several NGOs came together to help organize Wednesday's march, saying that access to land and housing is a fundamental right that is not being met for Haiti's earthquake survivors. Haitians are also struggling to get access to education. [Marie Yolen Gefrard, School Director and Representative of Platform for a Cause]: "We've heard from a government official that there is free school for all and we haven't seen that yet. #OccupyNOLA Successfully Disrupt Foreclosure Sales
[LESS INFO] 6 VIEWS | ADDED 19:00:08 12/11/11
Survivors Village, a community group of former St. Bernard public housing residents and their allies, joined forces on Dec. 6, 2011 with recently evicted Occupy NOLA protestors to successfully disrupt a Sheriff’s sale of foreclosed properties . Delaying the sale for two hours, the protestors chanted: >
“This auction is illegal and immoral. It is a way to steal homes, redistribute wealth and prevent the right to return. The sale of blighted property is the city's attempt to remove poor homeowners who have already suffered tremendously from economic and natural disaster. Blight has become an excuse to gentrify. Charging poor homeowners outrageous fees in order to steal their homes is an underhanded way to keep people displaced. Stop capitalizing off of crisis! This process is corrupt! You are stealing homes! Stop now!”
The sale was scheduled to begin at noon. At approximately 1:45 pm, after several potential buyers had already left, the police arrived and threatened the nonviolent protestors with arrest. Before declaring that the remainder of their protest would be silent, the protestors announced their intention to physically defend any properties sold: “We will be in court. We will be in the streets. We will be in the houses--defending them, boarding them up, and occupying them.”
Protestors specifically identified two properties and successfully urged buyers not to purchase them. The Fight Back Center, a long-time community center in the St. Bernard neighborhood in New Orleans’ 7th ward was slated to be auctioned at the sale despite city personnel having acknowledged that there were numerous legal problems with the process. “This is community space and we will fight to keep it that way,” protestors declared.
The Fight Back Center is currently being redeveloped and rebuilt by Survivors Village, which began in 2006 as a tent city of public housing residents who were locked out of their homes after Hurricane Katrina.
The protest was also carried out in solidarity with a call from Occupy Wall Street, who declared December 6 a day of action on the foreclosure crisis.

New Releases for September 6, 2011 - Press Pause Daily
[LESS INFO] 14 VIEWS | ADDED 04:34:08 09/06/11
Some big new releases are on tap this week with aliens, zombies, and fast cars. SHOW NOTES: GAME #1:
First up this week is Resistance 3.
In this third installment of the first person shooter franchise, you take on the role of Joseph Capelli. It’s been five years since the end of the last game and Nathan Hale is dead, killed by your own hand. America has fallen to the Chimera, and you are mankind’s last hope. Joseph will travel across the country, leaving his family behind in the hope that he will be able to help defeat the Chimera once and for all. And with added support for the Move, you’ll feel like you right in the thick of things.
While many thought the second game was a bit of a letdown, here’s hoping that this third installment brings the game back to the potential it showed in it’s first game. And hey, it’s an Insomniac game, so at least there will be cool guns, right?
GAME #2:
Next up we have a game that has been widely talked about, and greatly anticipated: Dead Island.
The game takes players to the beautiful South Pacific island of Banoi, the ultimate getaway for vacationers with money to burn. However, things quickly go to shit (crap) when a sudden zombie outbreak threatens the once tranquil island.
Cut off from the outside world, you play as one of four characters, who are somehow immune to the virus. You’ll need to protect the remaining survivors, discover what is REALLY going on, and find away off the island before you come to a very sticky end.
Warm sun, tropical breezes, and the rotting undead, what more could you ask for?
GAME #3:
And lastly this week we have the newest installment in the Driver franchise.
Driver: San Francisco puts players back into the shoes of original Driver protagonist John Tanner as he takes to the streets of the city by the bay to take down a ruthless crime lord.
Players will shift between more than 130 licensed cars, with the ability to shift to any car at any time as you drive though a network of more than 200 square miles of road. You’ll also see and driver by many iconic San Francisco landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge.
So strap in and hit the streets as you do your best Bullitt impression on the many hilly streets of San Francisco.
[cut-in]
Wait...Bullitt, that’s a movie right?
That will do it for your daily dose of Press Pause. Be sure to check out our live discussion show today over at twitch.tv/presspause at 12 pm pacific. You can also find fully edited episodes over at our Youtube channel: youtube.com/presspausemevio .

Vanishing on 7th Street
(Magnolia Pictures )
Release: 02/25/2011
From director Brad Anderson (Session 9, Transsiberian, The Machinist) comes VANISHING ON 7TH STREET, a terrifying, apocalyptic thriller that taps into one of humankind’s most primal anxieties: fear of the dark. An unexplained blackout plunges the city of Detroit into total darkness, and by the time the sun rises, only a few people remain—surrounded by heaps of empty clothing, abandoned cars and lengthening shadows. A small handful of strangers that have survived the night (Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton, John Leguizamo and newcomer Jacob Latimore) each find their way to a rundown bar, whose gasoline-powered generator and stockpile of food and drink make it the last refuge in a deserted city. With daylight beginning to disappear completely and whispering shadows surrounding the survivors, they soon discover that the enemy is the darkness itself, and only the few remaining light sources can keep them safe. As time begins to run out for them, darkness closes in and they must face the ultimate terror. The entire city’s population has vanished into thin air, leaving behind heaps of empty clothing, abandoned cars and lengthening shadows. In Iraq, Carbombs & Terrorism Don't Discriminate
[LESS INFO] 8 VIEWS | ADDED 04:49:30 10/01/07
BAGHDAD - November 23rd, 2006 was the second deadliest coordinated attack against civilians to date. The media covered the death toll and impact on property with graphic imagery. Unfortunately as with every previous attack, the impact on civilian survivors has not only been ineffectively covered, it appears to have been covered not at all. A Google search for “carbomb survivors” nets only one story on the survivors of a car bombing that is easy to find. That is Alive in Baghdad’s story Car Bomb Survivors, No Longer Statistics , on November 26th, 2006, just 4 days after the carbombing discussed this week.
Approximately 250 civilians are believed to have been wounded, but still alive, on November 25th, 2006. According to Reuters, via ABC News Online, “ Doctors say many of the wounded have serious injuries and are unlikely to survive. ” Three of these wounded include Shams, her mother, and her older brother Ghaith. Shams was just a year old when her family was driving through the Al-Hay Market on November 23rd. Her mother moved to protect her from the blast, her brother Ghaith was wounded with shrapnel to his back. Although Shams was saved, her mother wasn’t so lucky. She died from burns all over her body soon after reaching the hospital. Shams lived, but has been disfigured and has lost her sight. Her family has traveled to Iran, Jordan, and Syria seeking answers to her condition. Shams is luckier than most, as her family could afford this. However, she was not lucky enough to find an answer.
Shams story, although perhaps particularly poignant, is one of many untold stories of daily life in Baghdad. Human Rights Watch produced a list of “major” terrorist attacks on civilians from 2003 to September 2005 , this documents a short list of the attacks, but doesn’t tell what happened to the survivors. They describe the various victims of these attacks as well in their full report . Like most attacks, the information reported on the November 23rd triple bombing was disconnected and even contradictory. The death toll reporter ranged from 138 people killed , to 161 reported by MSNBC , to the confusing report of the Independent, which listed 140 dead in the title , but claimed 145 killed in the first sentence. The final accepted toll, was reported by the BBC as a much higher 202 , but still 13 shy of the 215 eventually claimed as the correct number.

A Small Band of Public Housing Rights Advocates gathered at the Iberville Projects and Marched down Canal Street calling for the Re-opening of habitable public housing and schools
Click Image to Download the VIDEO 8 mgs 3 minutes
On Saturday, December 3, a band of housing rights advocates gathered at the Iberville Projects on Basin St. Saturday in support of New Orleans residents' right to return to their homes and called for the re-opening of the city's public schools (2 or 3 public schools are open in Orleans Parish now). With 80% of the city flooded from hurricanes Katrina & Rita, and over a million Gulf South residents dislocated from their lives, the housing shortage, rapidly rising rents, and lack of sustainable government supports faces many thousands of people who wish to return to their homes and rebuild their lives. Evictions - both illegal and legal - are epidemic in the New Orleans area and returning home or the lack of ability to return to a home, rain down further struggles on the survivors of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In particular, people who needed public assistance to meet basic needs and the right to their home find the rug pulled out from under them as the city makes plans to tear down public housing, closing even livable and marginally damaged housing with little or no dialogue with displaced residents.
Less than 20% of pre-hurricane residents actually reside in New Orleans now, which currently hosts thousands of new building contractors, laborors, developers and gaggles of various military, security and law enforcement personel now set up shop in the no-flood zones, in a former arts high school, on enormous cruise ships and in public spaces in the city centers. With 80% of the city flooded and by devastating hurricanes, evictions, both illegal and legal, happen quickly, often with little or no legal formality with as few as 5 days or no notice at all in this tumultuous housing market and with little or no regard for any notion of housing rights. Residents of the cities extensive public housing wish to return home and reclaim their lives - or at least check on their home - however there is little dialogue with the Housing Aughority of New Orleans and information that HANO housing will be closed and bulldozed circulates fear and anger from displaced survivors of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Despite the fact that most New Orleans residents are out of town, a few dozen marchers gathered in front of the Iberville Public Housing projects just outside of the French Quarter to show support for the city's poor and working people and marched freely down Canal Street to the Federal encampment by the Mississippi Riverwalk. The marchers called for the re-opening of habitable public housing and public schools, dialogue and the right of residents to return home. The Coalition to Save Iberville, New Orleans Housing Emergency Action Team (NO HEAT), the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond, and Common Ground Eviction Defense represented at the march and can be contacted for support of Housing Rights.
