Now, more than 100 people have lost their lives to the torrential downpours... and the rains are set to continue for several more days. According to Chinese state-run media... torrential rains in central and southern China continue to trigger floods and landslides. State-run media Xinhua also reported that by late Monday (June 13), floods across parts of 13 provinces had killed 105 people with 63 missing. The floods have also damaged dozens of square miles of crops, and toppled hundreds of houses and other buildings. It's caused millions of dollars of economic losses. CCTV reports that more than 3000 relocated in Jiangxi Province in southern China. Heavy rains have turned drought-stricken areas into a picture of destruction. [Yan Huaiza, Resident of Anfu County, Jiangxi Province]: "The losses are very serious, everything was washed away, nothing is left." How to Plant Fall Asian Greens. By Patti Moreno, the Garden Girl There’s no better cure for the end-of-summer blues than extending your growing season. It’s as simple as planting cold weather crops. For me, that means a variety of Asian greens, which are great in stir fry and soup. (I have literally knocked snow off of my bok choy for beef stir fry.) Chinese kale and most kale varieties also do extremely well, if covered, and can add hearty crunch to soups. Bok choy and pok choy are quick to germinate and grow, so I can get a full crop in before the ground freezes. Same goes for many lettuces. In my video posted at boston.com’s gardening blog, I show you how to prep your bed and sow seeds. For those of us in the northeast, by installing a hoop house or cold frame, you can create a micro climate around your plants that will bring the temperature inside the hoop house up by almost 20 degrees on a sunny day, and give your fall/winter veggies an extra lift to get through our harsh overnight freezes. A short one this time – I upgraded to Karmic Koala and did a clean install with new partitions and EXT4 filesystem. And now I am getting the important stuff back on the disk and leave the cruft out. This meant that a lot of the files needed for a proper podcast are still on the external disks. I take a look a the new Folio by Jeff Curto at Lenswork – because it’s an example of printing an image on paper with a different aspect ratio, the images are really good and Jeff is a friend and I hope he sells a lot of them. Jeff does two podcasts in the Photocas Network, Camera Position and The History of Photography. The last is the only podcast where I have experienced a coffee break. I use an image from “wbool63″ from the forum to make some nice frames with G’MIC, the Swiss Knife plugin from France. And I have done….
