Structure committee credibility in question

This Tuesday the structure advisory committee, already embroiled in a great deal of controversy, will try to give a formal presentation of its "findings and conclusions" despite doubt cast by dissenting members of its own ranks. The presentation will be during a normal commission meeting but this one will be held at the Owen Building to accommodate an anticipated larger crowd. Last summer, by a unamimous vote of the Coos County Commission, a citizen advisory committee was formed to find ways to streamline county services. The seven member committee produced a majority and minority report with the former proposing a centralized management style and the hiring of a county chief executive. The majority report was delivered to the commission on Jan 17 amidst public protest due to the lack of proper notice. Despite claims by co-chairs that the conclusions presented January 17 were the consensus of the committee on January 31, Sheriff Zanni presented the dissenting view of 3 of 7 members. The minority report does not recommend hiring an executive and indicates that the majority have not identified how to pay for an executive or how doing so will save the county money.

Their goal is try to disrupt the annual gathering of the rich and powerful in Switzerland. The Occupy movement, which went global after protests against Wall Street last year, is camping in igloos to bring its argument with the super-rich "1 percent" to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. It is a reminder to the leaders of finance and industry at the WEF of the resentment that is leading to questions about the future direction of capitalism. The group has set up camp to "occupy" the WEF in a car park just outside the security cordon around the meeting. Activists say the camp, which includes six igloos plus two heated tepees and a field kitchen, can house about 50 people. [Ed Sutton, Occupy Protester]: "...There's seven billion people on the planet who don't have any kind of a say in what they are doing. And we just find that its personification of the fact that free market capitalism and democracy don't really fit together and that's the fundamental thrust of the occupy movement in general." Back then, being a Great Lake swimmer was a big deal; now, it's an astonishing physical feat taken for granted. It's a rapidly forgotten part of history, like a faded map or a tattered photograph. As economic concerns grow, so too is social unrest. Here's the story. The global economic recession is taking its toll on China's economy. New research released on Thursday by senior researchers for the Chinese regime shows a slowdown in its exports, although it could still achieve seven to eight percent of economic growth in 2012. For the first time in 28 months, foreign investment in China has dropped, according to a report by Reuters. It's bad news for China's already shrinking industrial sector. Strikes and protests have rocked the nation in recent months as factories close down. China's rapid economic growth since 2009 led to skyrocketing inflation. But as the economic fortunes of Europe and the US have soured, it now faces the opposite problem. The market China depended on for growth has vanished. Many expect 2012 to see even more losses. Coastguards say he made the seven hour trip to Taiwan on a boat made from styrofoam and bamboo sticks. A Chinese man was arrested on Wednesday for illegally entering Taiwan. He paddled a makeshift boat from China to the island, claiming he wanted to see Taiwan's version of democracy. Walking with police officers, 35-year-old Guo Zhiyong from China's Xinjiang Province expresses his disappointment at his arrest. [Guo Zhiyong, Paddled to Taiwan]: "I want to ask you a question -- are Taiwan and China both parts of the Republic of China? If they are one country then why am I illegal? Where are the human rights in Taiwan?" He saw the coming election as a means to share his views. The Kinmen County coast guard says the paddler was found at the shore with a boat and a backpack at approximately 8:00 am on Wednesday. [Pu Yulin, Deputy Captain, Kinmen Coast Guards]: "He came from China by re-assembling a piece of discarded styrofoam with some bamboo sticks.
