Khaled’s eldest daughter Souad was 7 years old, Summar was 4 years old. On the 12 day of the war, according to Khaled, both his children were shot dead by an Israeli soldier as the family left their home on the Army's command with their hands up and waving a white flag. While looking through the rubble once his home, Khaled found the bear Summar was holding when she was killed… SOT KHALED ABED RABBO "It was 12.50 on the 7th january, the Israeli tanks came right to the door of my house. They ordered us on loudspeakers to leave the house. My mother went out and then me and the children. My mother was holding up a white flag and the distance between us and the tanks could not have been more than 10 metres so they could see us clearly. Suddenly I saw one of the soldiers stick his head out of the tank, raise his gun and shoot at my children and mother. My eldest, Souad, was shot 12 times in her chest." Khaled then ran back inside the house and later escaped by foot with his wounded mother and youngest child- 2 year old Amal. She was also shot in the chest and has now been taken abroad for treatment. He says he is not Hamas and nobody was firing rockets in the area. He wants to know why Israeli soldiers killed his children and spared him. SOT KHALED ABED RABBO "There is no life after this..I don’t even have a single picture left of my children, everything is gone. Nothing to remember my babies by." Abed Rabbo is 2 km from the Israeli border..this area saw some of the worst bombardment and fighting of the war. 500 homes have been destroyed..thousands are homeless with no place to go…and the community is in mourning. And this is what’s left of the homes Israel spared here – turning many of them into makeshift military bases ….this family found their personal belongings buried, their bedrooms trashed..and that’s not the only thing Israeli soldiers left behind them… PTC Sherine Tadros – Abbed Rabbo Farm, Northern Gaza “We’ve seen around a dozen houses here and its pretty much the same story, not just did they demolish people’s homes but the soldiers also left messages on the walls and furniture – this one says Hamas bad, IDF or Israeli defence force good, this one says IDF were here ..and on this cupboard ‘we want you’ and on this one ‘join the Israeli Army today” I translated the messages for the family…" SOT AZZET FARAJ ABED RABBO “We want to live in peace. We are simple people, we used to work in Israel, my son worked for the Palestinian Authority..why would they write these things? And do this to our home? We don’t deserve to be humiliated.” (PIX: writings on the wall 'i love israel' and family looking at it) The Israeli PM has apologized to the Palestinian people, telling them this war was not meant to make them suffer…..but actions speak louder than words, and in Gaza both show Israel’s true intention. Gaza Refugees

Source: All AJE Exclusive Restrictions: None --------------------------------------------------------- Intro: Thousands of refugees are living in make shift refugee camps. Infants crying. Young children crying due to absence of milk. Refugees living in bad conditions. Shows: Makeshift refugee camps. Young women with infant crying. Young women shouting and weeping. Bad living conditions. Man drinking dirty water in makeshift camp. Young girl crying. Man shouting about the conditions. Shireen Tadros PTC They fled the frontlines of this war... knowing that Israel's assault would follow them. In Gaza, nowhere is safe and nobody is immune from the onslaught. There are hundreds of refugees now living in makehift centres like this school in Gaza City. Thirteen thousand have already been DRIVEN FROM THEIR HOMES, according to the UN. Noha left her home on the outskirts of the Strip with her husband and three children. Her youngest, Marwa, hasen’t been changed in 3 days. The milk she is drinking is the last bottle Noha has for her… SOT NOHA – REFUGEE I want to tell people outside to do something, why is Palestinian blood so cheap to you? Why are our neighbours living in peace but we are deprived of that? What have the children done to deserve this? Why should my daughter drink milk from a dirty bottle? She won’t even take it anymore. What did we do wrong? They bring us some milk, a blanket- we don’t want it! we want to go home and eat and sleep and live like everyone else. Where is the great Arab world that they taught us about at school? They have left us…shame on them. Conditions here are deteriorating..creating a CLEAN, SAFE shelter in a warzone is no easy task. PTC Sherine Tadros – Gaza City “The school simply isn’t equipped to be able to handle the number of refugees staying here night after night. This is the only place they can get clean water, but you can see most of the taps aren’t working and people are using this sink to wash their hands, their faces, their feet…and they're also using it to drink from because it’s the only clean water in the whole school” We could feel the anger all around the shelter.... disappointment at the inaction of the international community….and rage at the Arab leaders who they feel have sold them out. SOT Sobhi Rizk - Refugee Where are the authorities, where are our leaders..they have shut their eyes. Why is it that children around the world are allowed to live in peace but not Palestine’s children? Aren’t we all the same, the children of God. We just want to be free to live in peace. 61 members of Sobhi Rizk’s family are now living in this shelter….his granddaughter amal was overwhelmed by what was happening around her.. SOT Amal Rizk - Refugee I am crying for the children of Gaza that have been thrown in the streets. We have nothing to do with this. We don’t fire rockets, we don’t know what this war is about. Why should children be forced to drink dirty water, what did we do wrong? where is everyone?! Refugees are a casualty of every war. But in Gaza, there is nowhere safe to flee. Israel says its enemy is Hamas, but while it fights its battle it keeps a million and a half people trapped inside the warzone its created. ST, AJ,Gaza City 05/01/2009

They are hitting us, normal people, with F16 planes! A person who does that is not a human being. Refugee camps are hit all the time, we are flesh and bone we cannot stand that. The walls, look at the walls, they shake like there's an earthquake, they cant stand that either.” - Heba displaying the living conditions in the camp. - SOT - HEBA ABU SAMAAN GAZA REFUGEE CAMP RESIDENT - “We don’t have water, we cant wash anything, not even clean the fish we managed to get days ago. Look here this is shrapnel from an Israeli missile that fell nearby it broke the window. The Israelis claim they are not harming civilians or their homes. That Hamas is bearing the brunt of this war. Well what does this look like to you?” - Close of Dried fish in the kitchen. - Wide of window broken by Israeli Missiles. - Close of gas stove. - SOT - HEBA ABU SAMAAN GAZA REFUGEE CAMP RESIDENT “No, from the day I was born I have seen missiles and attacks in Gaza- with or without Hamas Israel punishes us. It’s the same story over and over again whoever is in control here.” - More of house interiors and damages. - Small girl drinking from a glass. - Heba's family sitting together. - Wide of Heba Abu Samaan at the door. Heba does not want to be here. But like half the population of Gaza, venturing out to get UN food aid, she has little choice. Israel’s blockade has stopped food distribution for 2 weeks…now its war has forced Gazans to choose between going hungry or risking their lives to find something to eat. We met Heba in the queue waiting to collect a food ration for her 15 brothers and sisters… we followed her home to the Shat’I refugee camp. For the past 6 days the family have not left their house…which is within target range of Israel’s warships. The 7 children who live here cant sleep at night… MOREB SOT (NEEDS ENGLISH V/O PLEASE) “The sounds we hear are incredible. They are hitting us, normal people, with F16 planes! Look here.. this is shrapnel from an Israeli missile that fell nearby…it broke the window. The Israelis claim they are not harming civilians or their homes. It’s the same story over and over again whoever is in control here.” All over Heba’s home is evidence of Israel’s continuing assault…. and the effects on those they insist are not their targets… But there is evidence here too of resilience …a family sticking together through times of hunger and now through days of war…both imposed by Israel. In the hour we spent with Heba we heard 4 rounds of Israeli warships firing onto Gaza…as we said good bye, the sounds of the fighter jets hovering above got louder and she said she had a bad feeling. Minutes after we left the Israeli military rang the home, warning the family to evacuate….the next round of fire was coming.
