The Dalit Massacre of Paramakudi
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 11:57:20 01/30/12
Tamil Nadu Police uses teargas, lathi and guns on unarmed dalit protesters. 11th September, 2011 was the day Paramakudi resident Valiswamy’s wife Gayatri gave birth to their first child. He was a dalit while she was from an upper caste family. In a caste sensitive area like Paramakuddi, inter-caste marriages are rare and they have to survive immense social pressure to come together. Valiswamy and Gayatri had fought hard and negotiated a truce with these forces. He was on his way to the hospital when he was caught in the Paramakudi firings, a widely reported incident in which the Tamil Nadu police opened fire on a group of unarmed dalits who were staging a peaceful protest. Valiswamy would not survive to see his newborn. “The families of the bereaved have received their compensations from the government but other than that, nothing has happened. The perpetrators are scot free. In fact, the chief minister has since been effusive in her praise for the state police. And the dalits are continuing to live in a stifling atmosphere of violence and fear. The incident has been a backlash to dalit morale in Tamil Nadu.” Dalit activist and IndiaUnheard Community Correspondent Mani M. aka Makkal Sevakan sounds angry and weary as he describes the situation in Paramakudi 5 months after the police’s attempts to disband a peaceful protest against the incarceration of popular dalit leader John Pandian resulted in the murder of 6 dalits and injuring many others. The incident caused uproar in the country. Dalit and Human Rights Organizations from across the nation condemned the attack and called for investigation. The media covered the incident extensively. The fact finding team set up to probe the incident made a strong case against the actions of the police but still as Mani puts it ‘nothing has happened.’ 54 years ago, Paramakudi was witness to one of the biggest caste riots in the country, a skirmish that cost the life of dalit iconoclast and leader, Immanuel Sekaran who was amongst the first Tamil Nadu dalits to advocate for dalit empowerment and rights against 3000 years of upper caste oppression. On 11th September, John Pandian was scheduled to arrive to pay his respects at Sekaran’s memorial. But using the sensitive atmosphere caused by recent murder of a dalit high school boy for allegedly writing offensive graffiti against the upper castes as a pretext, the police pre-emptively arrested him. When the crowd gathered to receive Pandian heard news of the arrest, they protested by peacefully occupying the road. The police’s diplomatic response was teargas and a lathi charge. The mood soured and the crowd turned unruly. A few protestors began pelting stones against the police. The police responded with gunfire. “It is not like the police could not handle the situation. There is an upper caste festival in Paramakudi each year that goes smoothly without the need to resort to pre-emptive arrests and lathi and gunfire. But the first time the dalits try to get together and organize a festival, it ends in tragedy,” says Mani. Mani was in Chennai on the fateful day when he heard of the Paramakudi firings. He immediately got on the first train. When he arrived, he saw a wasteland of police barricades, empty streets and burning vehicles. Some of Mani’s friends who had been part of the protest had managed to record footage of the police bashing in the heads of the people and shooting at unarmed civilians. The footage, which offers a birds eye view of the incident, justifies the statements of the fact finding group but there has been similar footage before and witness accounts and reports and photographs and yet, ‘nothing has happened.’ Of all the cases filed in the Tamil Nadu Courts under the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribes Protection Act, 95% are acquitted. It is a disturbing figure that makes the atrocities seem insignificant or routine. In the 1969 Kilvenmani massacre, 44 landless dalit labourers were burnt alive for demanding better wages. In 1997, the dalit panchayat president and others were murdered in Melavalau. In September 2002, at Kaundampatti in Dindigul district, a dalit worker was forced to drink urine for having lodged a complaint of trespass with the police. In May 2002, two dalits were forced to eat human excreta in Thinniyam village in Tiruchi district. In 2011, on the 54th anniversary of a dalit massacre and the subsequent murder of Immanuel Sekaran, 6 dalits are killed in broad daylight by the state police. And not a single perpetrator has been brought to justice. Almost as if nothing had happened. ——————————————- For a brief account of the dalit struggle in Tamil Nadu, read http://www.pragoti.in/node/3947

TEDxRotterdam - Richard Straver - Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication Leonardo DaVinci is alleged to have said: 'simplicity is the ultimate sophistication'. And indeed, his sculptures look so smooth and natural, they appear to have just shaken off the stone to step out of it. Nothing reminisces the endless hard working hours it obviously took too make them. The truly good things on this earth seem to just come into existence effortless. Richard Straver is convinced that he has developed one of these really good things: something that appears so simple, you and I should have thought of it our selves. On TEDxRotterdam Richard Straver reveals this unique project. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

There's now a sense of cautious hope for smooth recovery. Euro zone leaders announced agreement on Thursday on a comprehensive package of measures to tackle the euro zone's sovereign debt crisis. The deal calls for private owners of Greek bonds to accept a 50 percent writedown on their investment. The scope of the new version of the euro zone's rescue fund would be increased substantially to about 1 trillion euros. And China-region investors were relieved, as fears lessened over a hard landing for the Chinese economy. [John Noonan, Asia Pacific FX Head, IFR Markets]: "Well the markets were pleasantly surprised by the fact that there was as much details as there was, particularly on the 50 percent haircut. The reports earlier indicated that the banks were holding out for 40 percent while the EU wants something closer to 60." Thursday's numbers made the relief apparent: the Hang Seng Index closed up 3.26 percent, The China Enterprises Index of top Hong Kong-listed mainland companies was up 5.13 percent, and The Shanghai Composite ended up 0.34 percent.Euro zone leaders announced agreement on Thursday on a comprehensive package of measures to tackle the euro zone's sovereign debt crisis. Saint Anger "Between Us"
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 15:18:08 07/01/11
Hip Hop/R%B artist Saint Anger’s video “Between Us” featuring J. Tait is a reminder that even in the hard core world of rap, there’s room for love. This is a video and track that you’ll want to be watching when it’s time to chill out with that special someone after a long day or right before a long night. With a smooth, swagging beat and lyrics, this is definitely one to chill by. Live shots of the artist and his lady love in various places keep the video real and the focus on the lyrics, which are tight and sweet. Sometimes when you get back from the club, you need to soften it up just a bit to get the mood right, and Saint Anger fills that void with “Between Us.” He’s is on top of his game with this one in all respects.

T Fi J33 Luke & Max's 1st Vegetable Garden
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 12:13:17 08/27/10
For his summer English project, my son Luke uses English to tell the story of a vegetable garden he and his sister Max planted this past spring. Papa wrote the script, Luke worked hard to learn the lines, then we spent a couple of afternoons recording and filming. It was a lot of good practice for Luke! He's not totally smooth, but it's so cool to hear him speak in only English for an extended period. I hope you like this little story. If you have some words of encouragement for Luke, please leave comments. This will give Luke some good reading practice!

Top 100 Teacher Jon Tattersall explains how to improve your game with powerful drives. Allow the right side of your body to expand and go into the golf ball will help utilize and maximize all available power into the ball allowing it to go farther. Distributed by Tubemogul.I'M AT EAST LAKE GOLF CLUB, ON THE NINTH HOLE, THE SITE OF THIS YEAR’S TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP. IT’S A PAR FIVE AND POWER IS IMPORTANT ON A PAR FIVE. THE OLD ANALOGY OF DRIVE FOR SHOW, PUTT FOR DOUGH REALLY DOESN’T COUNT ANY MORE. IF YOU DON’T DRIVE THE BALL WELL, YOU’RE DONE BY THE TIME YOU GET TO THE PUTTING GREEN. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A LOT OF PEOPLE TRY AND HIT THE GOLF BALL HARDER, THEY’RE VERY VERY GOOD AT GETTING TO THE TOP OF THEIR BACKSWING AND THEN, THEY PULL DOWN VERY HARD WITH THEIR LEFT SIDE BUT, THEY DON’T GET THE GOLF CLUB ONTO THE GOLF BALL. THEY DON’T MAKE MAXIMUM USE OF THE POWER THEY’VE CREATED. WHAT I’D LIKE YOU TO THINK ABOUT IS HOW YOU CAN GET TO THE TOP OF THE GOLF SWING. RATHER THAN TRY AND KEEP THIS SIDE HERE AND STOP THE RIGHT SIDE FROM COMING DOWN, ALLOW THE RIGHT SIDE TO EXPAND AND COME DOWN INTO THE GOLF BALL. YOU’RE PULLING WITH THE LEFT SIDE, YOU’RE GETTING THE RIGHT SIDE DOWN. WHEN I GO TO THE TOP OF THE BACKSWING, I’VE GOT A 90-DEGREE BEND IN THE RIGHT FOREARM. WHAT I WANT TO FEEL FROM THE TOP OF THE SWING IS THAT EXTENDS. IT GOES STRAIGHTER. THAT GETS THE CLUB HANDLE CLOSER TO THE GROUND AS YOU COME DOWN. AND THEN, WE’RE ALLOWING THE ARMS TO ROTATE BACK IN FRONT OF THE BODY GETTING A NICE STRAIGHT LEFT ARM AT IMPACT, VERY STRONG HITTING POSITION, FULL EXTENSION OF BOTH ARMS AS YOU STRIKE THE GOLF BALL. TIMING THAT UP WITH HOW YOUR BODY MOVES LEFT, NOW YOU GET THE CORRECT SEQUENCE OF THE CLUB COMING INTO THE GOLF BALL. A GREAT DRILL TO TRY AND FEEL THAT, TAKE YOUR LEFT HAND AND PUT IT ON YOUR RIGHT SHOULDER. TAKE THE CLUB BACK TO THE TOP AND JUST FEEL YOURSELF SWING YOUR RIGHT ARM THROUGH AND EXTEND YOUR RIGHT ARM THROUGH THE SHOT. THAT WILL GIVE YOU THE FEELING OF HOW MUCH THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE GOLF SWING HAS GOT TO PARTICIPATE TO MAKE THE GOLF BALL FLY FURTHER. THAT’S GOING TO FEEL SOMETHING LIKE THIS WHEN YOU HIT THE SHOT. TRY AND BE SMOOTH WITH EVERYTHING. I HOPE THAT HELPS YOU GET SOME MORE POWER ON THE GOLF BALL.

Chase Jarvis TECH: Photo Shoot In 180 Seconds
[LESS INFO] 16 VIEWS | ADDED 18:09:14 08/07/08
So many of the photography videos out there show great behind-the-scenes footage and tons of gear-related details. This video is more than that. In this Chase Jarvis TECH, I'm responding to the dozens--seemingly hundreds--of emails I've received recently asking me to highlight the various steps that comprise a professional commercial photo shoot. Therefore, follow along in this 3 minute video as I walk you through a recent commercial assignment where I was hired to photograph 3 hot young golf ladies of the LPGA. [And of course I included a lighting diagram and tech specs in the video for you photo geeks out there.] Click the 'continue reading' link below for a more complete description of the shoot, including the 6 core components to almost every commercial gigs, a detailed list of the equipment used, and more. -- We all like to focus on the creative aspects of our jobs as photographic artists. I know that's my favorite part - it keeps us sane and engaged. However, often overlooked are the nuts and bolts, or the framework for what enables our professional creative vision to become a reality. As you see in the vid, it's my belief that nearly every commercial shoot has 6 core components or phases. Roughly, those are: 1. Contracts, creative concepting, and pre-production. In this phase you're putting the deliverables in writing, your flexing your creative muscles with the client, and you (or your producer) are lining up the logistical details of the shoot. 2. Travel. While it's not a component to every shoot (eg, in your studio?), it is a big part of many shoots. Whether you travel across the country, the world, or just your home town, you're still moving bodies and equipment, and thus this deserves your attention. 3. Scouting. Whether you do it weeks, days, or hours in advance, you should--if at all possible--build time into your schedule to visit the location before you shoot. Take into consideration how the light looks, where the sun moves, logistical challenges, etc. Take sample images and look at various angles. Make a game plan. 4. Shooting. This is the fun part where you get to do all the stuff that made you want to be a photographer in the first place. Focus on creativity and executing your vision. 5. Post production. This is the step where you process your images, retouch them according to the client needs, and most importantly add your personal mojo. This is often overlooked, so be sure to build time into the schedule. (See an earlier post for my opinions on this.) 6 Delivery. Whether you deliver online via FTP or via hard drives, DVDs, or whatever media via Fed Ex, it's important that you have a smooth system that works for both you and the client, with special attention to file format, color space, and timeline, etc. Obviously, these 6 components are just a shell meant to act as a guideline. You could thin-slice this to death and include color palette review, stylist collaboration, prepping the models or talent, etc, but I've chosen to sort these things into these 6 larger buckets. Of course you could also add things before and after this set of six, like wooing the client before and following-up after the job with a thank you, etc. Again, I'm truncating these elements in favor of focusing on the big 6 elements so that you catch my drift. Other specs from this job: -I shot using the Nikon D3, and -I shot primarily with the Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8 lens, and -I shot primarily on a Bogen carbon fiber tripod and a Manfrotto head, and -I shot tethered to an Apple MacBook Pro (see Pimped Laptop Case vid), and -I shot directly into Apple Aperture, and -I used 2 Profoto 7b packs, and -I used Pocket Wizards to fire the strobes, and -I used one medium and one small Chimera softbox. The great LPGA golfers I was fortunate to shoot for this gig were: -Erica Blasberg -Charlotte Mayorkas -Irene Cho

Primo Desiderio Casper Classic II

Primo skating at the second Casper Classic event. He displays some pretty solid skating including a lot of his old staple tricks like the railstand wheel spins, and kneeling shove its and even a super smooth TV stand. At the end he tries to cap his run off with a rail handstand flip, but can't quite come up with it. I love after his first try how he starts breakdancing, that was funny, and showed that he was out there to have fun. Also, this another one of those "Warning: THE MUSIC SUCKS IN THIS VIDEO" videos, so ignore it and watch Primo, who is admittedly hard to see due to the lighting. Also, I think this was 2003, unless the first Casper Classic was in 2003, then this was the next year.

120 - Leopard - Install Preparation & Time Machine [Trailer]
[LESS INFO] 8 VIEWS | ADDED 11:48:13 10/19/07
At last! The launch date has been announced, the DVD printers are churning out copies of Leopard and all we have to do now is pre-order and wait for the big day!
Well we could sit and wait, but there's lots of things we can be doing in the meantime to ensure that our Macs are fit and ready to receive Leopard. More importantly, there's things we can do in advance to make sure that the installation or upgrade goes smoothly and that we are in a position to recover if things don't go as well as planned.
Yes, this week's show is all about preparing for the Leopard install and what sensible steps you need to do in advance.
One of the major things is ensuring that you have a good bootable backup of your Mac BEFORE you even think about upgrading. In this episode, I take you through some of the options for getting an external hard disk that can dual as both a bootable backup of your current system and also be configured to act as your Time Machine backup at the same time! I also cover some simple housekeeping steps to weed out the data and applications that clutter up your hard disk. The show covers:
Selecting an External Hard Disk
Partitioning your new disk
Creating a Time Machine volume
Creating a Bootable Backup using Superduper
Testing your Bootable Backup
Disk Housekeeping
Identifying large files with Grandperspective
Removing Applications with Appzapper
Updating Applications with AppFresh

04 The Long Shot
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 18:07:44 07/28/07
02.28.06 As filmmakers, there are very few tasks that can be described as ‘easy’. Getting the perfect shot - not easy, casting the perfect actor - not easy, finding and dressing the perfect set - not easy... usually. So, naturally, it’s hard to put into words how happy we were when, one fine summer day, we randomly stumbled upon an absolutely picture-perfect old west frontier town built in the middle of nowhere. Of course, we’re planning on shooting our scenes at this location in the warmer weather... but in the middle of a Canadian winter, we still had to ‘scout’ the location, and plan out all of our shots to be sure everything goes as smoothly as possible when we had a dozen or so actors staring at us, expecting us to know what we’re doing. So, off we set in the midst of a blizzard to do a two-man rehearsal of all the action we would be shooting on our production day later this year. As dramatic as our rehearsal was for us, getting ourselves and our Chrysler out of our picture-perfect old west frontier town’s snow covered parking lot was a whole other dramatic event. Now that the feeling has returned in our fingers and toes we clutch our bellies as we laugh heartily while we watch these antics. Hopefully you will, too. So go ahead, clutch your belly, you know you want to. | Matt & Jeff Campagna
