New found energy, new found purpose: that's what Not Without A Fight is all about. The first New Found Glory album to bear the Epitaph logo brims with fresh promise, showcasing a band comfortable in their own skin and eager to get back to basics and present it all to the world. Not Without A Fight is arguably the strongest addition to an impressive catalog with no less than three gold records and ... some of the most memorable songs of the past decade.
Album opener "Right Where We Left Off" is an instant reminder of the keen self-awareness that endeared New Found Glory to millions of fans worldwide in the first place. And naming their album Not Without A Fight? That's a nod to that other side of the group Epitaph owner Brett Gurewitz called "the greatest pop-punk band in history," the side that is scrappy, that's from the do-it-yourself scene. The side of a band who probably never should have been lumped in with some of the more teeny-bop friendly fare they've often shared the rock radio and TRL charts with.
Lead single "Listen to Your Friends" flips the script by rocking a verse even catchier than its chorus; "I'll Never Love Again" boasts a killer singalong. "47" has a hooky scream that breaks new ground for the Florida-bred five-some while "Truck Stop Blues" summons the potent urgency of the burgeoning scene that New Found Glory arose from, recalling a bygone era when they shared small stages with their friends in Get Up Kids, Piebald and Saves The Day.
Not Without A Fight packs together the best elements of fan favorite albums like Sticks and Stones (2002) and Catalyst (2004) with a reinvigorated drive making for a declaration that's fresh and timely. There's pop, there's punk, there's crunch, there's those irrepressible melodies and Jordan Pundik's instantly recognizable voice is in fine form.
"Nobody in New Found Glory loves anything as much as this band," says guitarist Chad Gilbert, by way of explanation as to how they have managed to maintain the same lineup - Pundik, Gilbert, Steven Klein (guitar), Ian Grushka (bass) and Cyrus Bolooki (drums) - for over ten years. "You fight with your mom. You don't hang out with her all the time. But you love her! You're never going to hate her. We're family. It might sound cliche, but that's what it is."
That family first came together in Coral Springs, Florida in 1997. Nothing Gold Can Stay (1999) and New Found Glory (2000) became classics thanks to hard-touring and good natured relationship building the world over, which ensured the next two albums (Sticks and Stones and Catalyst) would both debut in the Top 5 on the Billboard 200 chart.
As happens all too often, the uber-successful and beloved band found themselves delivering Coming Home to a group of relative strangers who lacked the same investment in them as before. By 2006, many of the folks who worked with the band at the label had been replaced by new faces, from the president on down. "At major labels, people are always losing their jobs," Gilbert points out. "Someone can love your band one week and the next week that person is fired."
With their recording contract fulfilled and in between management, New Found Glory seized the opportunity to have some fun while weighing their options, releasing From the Screen to Your Stereo Part II (something their most ardent supporters had demanded for years) and a split EP with their alter-ego, International Superheroes Of Hardcore.
"It brought this different attention to our band that we hadn't had in a while," Gilbert says. "Through the major label years, some of those lines got blurred because of some of the things the label did representing our band. With the release on Bridge 9 Records, we were able to do things how we wanted to do them. It was awesome."
In the midst of all of this, the band continued to write their next album, which they ultimately decided to record before choosing a new label. That's where +44 / Blink 182's Mark Hoppus came in, agreeing to produce Not Without A Fight at the studio he co-owns with Travis Barker. "He's an old friend of ours," Gilbert explains. "We had no money to make the record so we wanted someone with the confidence to do the album for free and get reimbursed later."
Eventually, of course, the label situation needed sorted out, as the guys in New Found Glory have no desire to be in any kind of "business" other than than business of writing great songs, recording them and playing them live. "When we announced that we were no longer signed to Geffen two years ago, Brett Gurewitz was the first one to call me," Gilbert remembers. "'People at Epitaph are all music fans and have their shit together."
And as for that spectacular accolade from the man running their new record label home? "It's crazy!" Chad says, laughing. "The Descendents could take that crown way before we could, or Screeching Weasel, or Green Day. I don't know why he said that! He's crazy. It's flattering. It's really flattering. But I don't know what to say!"
New Found Glory's first Epitaph album has no guest appearances, no frills, nothing but fantastic songs and powerful performances. "If you really listen to our music, you can't pigeonhole it. We play music that we love." Not Without A Fight is alternately the band's most streamlined and direct but powerful and broad album thus far.

R.I.P Snorkel the Tiger …

"As a cub, Snorkel spent his early years forced to pose as a prop with people for their photos. Then he ended up caged for years at a family circus.Luckily, he found a true safe haven at Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, FL. Watch as he finally enjoys a taste of the wild and, for the first time in his life, was able to run...still much less than he truly deserves. *Snorkel passed away on 3-12-10, we were told that he was born in 1989 not 1996 (typo on the video) making him around 21 years old! Help WWF, The International Tiger Coalition and Big Cat Rescue tighten regulations to protect captive tigers in the U.S and prevent the increased demand for tiger products that put wild populations at risk. Sign WWF's petition to Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack asking them to use their authority to close existing loopholes in the permitting and monitoring of captive tigers in the U.S. SIGN THE PETITION HERE: http://bit.ly/aC1IFN At present, there is currently no way to determine how many captive tigers are in the U.S., where they are, who owns them, or what happens to them when they die. This makes them an easy target for black market sales, stimulating demand for tiger products and threatening wild populations by putting them at increased risk of poaching. Paladinette Introduces “Jobless Talk Rant” to 99er Nation
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 17:12:37 01/08/11
Yesterday, Paladinette Introduced “Jobless Talk Rant” to the 99er Nation. Jobless Talk Rant is a YouTube version of the opening remarks of her BlogTalk Radio Show, which airs Fridays at noon Pacific called Jobless Talk.
Jobless Talk was the first BlogTalk Show dedicated exclusively to “the stories of the unemployed, benefit extensions, Washington inaction to help the jobless millions, the out of control US unemployment rate and what Congress is not doing to help the 99er Nation.”
The 99er’s Rant can be found on ThePaladinette’s YouTube Channel http://www.youtube.com/user/ThePaladinette?feature=mhum and her show is even available free on I-Tunes. As She put it in yesterday’s show “I am even on Itunes Isn’t that a HOOT! Itunes.apple.com/bw/podcast/paladinette-blog-talk.../id373134073 free Podcast downloads you can schedule to automatically go into your I-TUNES PodCast Library!”
Yesterday’s Jobless Talk Show was the first of the New Year and came after a two week Holiday hiatus, since December 17, 2010.
This first installment of the Jobless Talk Rant comes in 2 parts (seen below) and is focused upon stirring the 99er Nation out of their apathetic and often self-deprecation lethargy after the long, unfruitful Tier 5 fight in 2010.
> “Actually I am trying to stir up 99ers from their sadness and Depression. What is happening to the 99er Nation is SHAMEFUL - but the shame is on Washington NOT the 99ers. Whether or not you agree with everything I write or opine that makes no difference to me - what matters is that I/We can agree to disagree and still stand in brother/sisterhood rising up to take our rightful place and demand what we have a right for - SURVIVAL! VIVA la 99er Nation, Arise and stand proud of what you have come through with NO HELP from Washington - only us helping each other!” Yesterday’s episode of Jobless Talk was the first of the new 2 hour format and was full of inspiring ideas, personal stories and poignant - In Your Face Style Paladinette is well known for employing.
> “Honestly I am not here to molly coddle anyone. I cannot and likely will NEVER understand anyone in our situation NOT being thrilled over the good fortune bestowed upon another down and out American. Some folks were actually pissed off at me at the end of last year because I found a benefactor to keep this show on the air. Now I will never understand not being absolutely THRILLED over the blessings God bestows on a fellow human being struggling to survive. Do not allow anyone to make you feel less than INCLUDING yourself.”
One of the most important suggestions she makes during this diatribe of a 99er Wake Up Call is to STOP fighting amongst themselves and remember everyone is human, makes mistakes and does their utmost best to lead the 99er Nation to what they need from Washington, in the form of more UI benefits NOW and a robust Jobs bill very soon.
One of the “Key STRATEGIES” she lays out in both her show and yesterday’s rant is:
> All of you need to:
GET over to U-Cubed [ http://www.unionofunemployed.com ] and sign up it is free and Rick Sloan who runs it is so smart about Washington and how it works. He has a long history and background in advocating for working class America with his involvement in IAM union. This man is so smart and U-Cubed will be a mover and shaker this year in the 99ers fight. How many people are represented in the 99ers union group what 20,000 or more? > I say stay with the 99ers union thing but also Get on U-Cubed now, today. When you get there, send me a friend request Paladinette . We need an army of folks fed up enough to take this fight to victory. I assure you that 20K people - ready to fight for survival of the 99ers under the leadership of Rick Sloan will make a HUGE difference and expedite the reward of our efforts. > So - spread the word. Get the word out to all the groups, blogs social networks, FB pages, radio shows, unemployed friends, pass out flyers if that is they only way you can help. Tell your friends and family to join you in this fight. It will help educate them, inspire you and positive energy attracts like energy. The power of like-minded people coming together for a good cause simply has to spawn something good.
The time to hide in your homes behind your computers is transcending into a call for more visible involvement. Hold your elected officials accountable. They put us in this mess and I for one intend to be politely in their face until we get what the 99er Nation needs to survive and eventually thrive. We will not be ignored any longer.
So I ask you How bad do you want to survive? Do you want it bad enough to pitch in and leave comfortable and apathy AND your ego at the door? Well now is the time and today is the day!
>
I will NOT GIVE UP OR GIVE IN! Nor will I stop trying new things that have the potential to effect the CHANGE necessary to help the 99ers - What you think of me personally is really none of my business. RATHER It is what we can accomplish together that is important the rest is distractions and immaterial crap!
SO I ASK You all out there in Unemployed America once AGAIN
Who is with me?
PLEASE SPREAD THES LINKS AROUND the Blogosphere wherever Jobless Americans may roam http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKaCkUJCbLw

[The donation button below is for me, Paladinette. If you like what I write please donate so I can keep on fighting for the 99ers! Thank You!]

I dunno, I thought that the video would be a little more horrifying for all the fuss . >
Several hundred people gathered Sunday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to protest the recent decision by the Smithsonian Institution to remove a contentious video from a current exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
The video, "A Fire in My Belly," which was created by the late New York artist David Wojnarowicz and had been part of the exhibition "Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture," includes a scene of ants crawling over a crucifix. The film was removed following criticism from, among others, the Catholic League and Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio).[..]
The protesters marched from the Museum to Cooper-Hewitt, the city's primary Smithsonian institution, holding signs reading "Silence=Death" and "Smithsonian, Stop the Censorship."
The WSJ conveniently left out the name, but the outcry originated none other than Bill Donohue, the perpetually outraged head of the Catholic League, seeking headlines once again . >
A Smithsonian exhibit that includes a video of ants crawling on a crucified Christ has triggered an unholy backlash -- with the head of the Catholic League fuming that the artwork is "hate speech."
"A Fire in My Belly," by the late artist David Wojnarowicz, is included in "Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture," a show at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery to run through Feb. 13.
Catholic League President Bill Donohue said the four-minute video "was designed to insult and inflict injury and assault the sensibilities of Christians," and he blasted the museum's federal funding.
"If the government can't fund the promotion of religion, it shouldn't be in the business of funding an animus to religion," he said.
Smithsonian spokeswoman Linda St. Thomas declined to comment "on people's opinions on art," but noted that the museum, although 55 percent funded by Congress, raises its own money for exhibits.
That's right, the exhibit was privately--not government--funded. But you get a little wailing by Bill Donohue, egged on by John Boehner and the Smithsonian folded like a house of cards.
But there are many whose delicate sensibilities aren't so easily affected. In solidarity with the artist and against the censorship, protests have occurred in DC, NYC and Chicago and now, museums are agreeing to exhibit "A Fire In My Belly", including the University of Chicago's Smart Museum . >
While marches of protest have been staged in Washington, D.C., and New York City, dozens of privately funded institutions and collectives across the country have obtained permission from The Estate of David Wojnarowicz (via New York City-based P.P.O.W., which has represented Wojnarowicz's work since 1988) to screen "A Fire in My Belly" on their own terms. Among them are a trio of Chicago venues including the Smart Museum, which announced this week the video airing as well as a faculty panel discussion organized in part by graduate student Jenn Sichel, who served as a research assistant for "Hide/Seek."
"On the one hand, it's disheartening to see a work being used so blatantly out of context in this way to stir up controversy," Smith said. "But on the other hand, it's really quite beautiful and heartening to see how quickly awareness of the situation has spread, and to see how many institutions have really stepped up to provide people in their communities the opportunity to see the work, to experience it as art rather than just as this tool."

Nigel Barker's Beauty Equation World Book Tour 2010
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 19:17:33 10/29/10
Wow! So writing the Beauty Equation was a labor of love but the actual tour was if possible even more magical, if not thoroughly exhausting! Starting out in my home in NYC, we hit the road running. The following weeks took us all over the country on 15 stops not to mention an additional 7 city stop in Europe, namely my country of birth, England with a two day stint in Amsterdam. Everywhere we were met by happy throngs of Beauty Equation readers, many of which were deep into the book by the time we caught up with them. I will never forget one young girl at the beginning of the US tour, ; who came running up giving me a big squeeze and simultaneously bursting into tears. She had a hair lip and told me that she had never felt beautiful, since reading the book she was now finding herself and had grown in confidence. Not only did she know she could be beautiful but others certainly did - Her first boyfriend waved at me sheepishly from the sidelines... at that point I knew that the book was serving it's purpose, to encourage, inspire and motivate. I truly believe we all have the power to be beautiful, we just need the humility to summon it.The tour took a nostalgic turn in England, as I visited my old high school in Blandford Forum, Dorset. I discussed the purposefulness of art and photography in the world today, illustrating my point with the ability to spot light serious world issues with imagery that can change hearts and minds. Amsterdam and Toronto were also enormously fun. They kept me on my toes by filling the long days with dozens of TV, radio and press interviews. An average day on the tour would start at 4 AM when Ali, my personal assistant, and I would head off to the local airport to catch a 6 AM flight to wherever, arriving normally at around 11ish, diving straight into press or morning TV and radio chat rooms. We would do a book talk followed by a book signing in the late afternoon, snacking when and where we could, wrapping most nights at about 10 PM, only to start the whole thing again the following morn! I lost 10 lbs on the trip which is something I am happily eating back on again...... The hardest part of course was being away from Crissy, Jack and Jasmine but they have been and continue to be my rock, stone and pebbles for which I live for.Oh and by the way the tour's not over - I am heading to Grand Rapids Michigan on the 10th of November, then we have a few events in NYC in December followed by a book signing at Page & Palette in Fairhope AL on the 23rd of December. In 2011 we could be coming to a bookstore, school or college near you. Let us know if you'd like us to come and I'll do all I can to make it happen. Oh and we are planning an Asian trip to Hong Kong, Manila, Singapore, Shanghai and Seoul late Spring...... stay tuned and keep posting your stories and questions on BE One

The Switch :
(Walt Disney Pictures)
Release: 08/20/2010 A 40-year-old unmarried woman decides to become pregnant by inseminating herself with a turkey baster. What she doesn't know is that the sperm is from her best friend, who must live with the secret that the child is his.
Nanny McPhee Returns:
Production Information “I am going to explain to you the way I work. When you need me, but do not want me…then I must stay. When you want me, but no longer need me…then I have to go.” —Nanny McPhee In Nanny McPhee Returns, Academy Award®-winning actress EMMA THOMPSON (An Education, Stranger Than Fiction, Nanny McPhee, Love Actually, Sense and Sensibility) returns to the role of the magical nanny who appears when she’s needed the most and wanted the least in the next chapter of the hilarious and heartwarming fable that has enchanted children around the world. In the latest installment, Nanny McPhee appears at the door of a harried young mother, Mrs. Isabel Green (Academy Award® nominee MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL of Crazy Heart, The Dark Knight, Stranger Than Fiction, SherryBaby), who is trying to run the family farm while her husband is away at war. But once she’s arrived, Nanny McPhee discovers that Mrs. Green’s children are fighting a war of their own against two spoiled city cousins who have just moved in and refuse to leave. Relying on everything from a flying motorcycle and a statue that comes to life to a tree-climbing piglet and a baby elephant who turns up in the oddest places, Nanny McPhee uses her magic to teach her mischievous charges five new lessons. Starring alongside Thompson and Gyllenhaal in Nanny McPhee Returns are RHYS IFANS (Notting Hill, Pirate Radio, Greenberg) as Mrs. Green’s villainous brother-in-law, Phil, and legendary two-time Academy Award®-winning actress DAME MAGGIE SMITH (Becoming Jane, Harry Potter series) as the delightfully enigmatic Mrs. Docherty. Nanny McPhee Returns is directed by BAFTA winner and two-time Emmy nominee SUSANNA WHITE (television’s Generation Kill, Bleak House, Jane Eyre) from a screenplay by Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson, based on the character from the “Nurse Matilda” children’s book series by CHRISTIANNA BRAND. It is produced by LINDSAY DORAN (in her fifth collaboration with Thompson, including Nanny McPhee, Stranger Than Fiction and Sense and Sensibility) and by Working Title Films’ TIM BEVAN and ERIC FELLNER (Green Zone, Atonement, Bridget Jones’s Diary). The accomplished behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography MIKE ELEY (Touching the Void, television’s Grey Gardens), production designer SIMON ELLIOTT (Brick Lane, television’s Bleak House), editor SIM EVAN-JONES (Shrek, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe), eight-time Oscar®-nominated composer JAMES NEWTON HOWARD (The Dark Knight, King Kong, Salt) and two-time Oscar®-nominated costume designer JACQUELINE DURRAN (Atonement, Pride & Prejudice). The family comedy’s executive producers are DEBRA OSBORNE (Nanny McPhee, Atonement), LIZA CHASIN (Nanny McPhee, Pride & Prejudice) and Emma Thompson. SYNOPSIS Mrs. Green is at the end of her rope. Her three children—Norman (ASA BUTTERFIELD), Megsie (LIL WOODS) and Vincent (OSCAR STEER)—are constantly fighting with each other. Her husband, Rory (EWAN MCGREGOR), is away at war and hasn’t been heard from in months. Her brother-in-law Phil is pressuring her to sell him Rory’s half of the family farm and her employer, Mrs. Docherty, is beginning to behave very oddly indeed. On top of all that, her posh niece and nephew, Celia (ROSIE TAYLOR-RITSON) and Cyril Gray (EROS VLAHOS), are being sent to the farm from London for an unlimited stay, and the village warden, Mr. Docherty (SAM KELLY), keeps warning her that bombs could accidentally fall out of the sky at any moment. It’s all too much for Mrs. Green. She doesn’t know it yet, but the person she needs is Nanny McPhee. Unfortunately, Mrs. Green’s situation is even worse than it appears. Phil has been telling her that he has a buyer lined up who will give them a good price for the farm, but in truth he owes a gambling debt to the shadowy Mrs. Biggles. Mrs. Biggles has sent two female thugs, Miss Topsey (SINEAD MATTHEWS) and Miss Turvey (KATY BRAND), to threaten Phil and force him to get the farm away from Mrs. Green to pay off his IOU; if he succeeds, the Green family will lose everything. Cyril and Celia show up a day early while Mrs. Green is away at work. The rich city children and their country cousins hate each other on sight, and their fighting quickly escalates to epic proportions. Mrs. Green comes home to find absolute mayhem in her house. She is trying in vain to stop the fighting when she hears a knock at the door. She opens it to reveal the unsettling figure of Nanny McPhee. Nanny McPhee takes one look at the warring cousins and knows immediately that these children need her. She repeats her well-known phrase: “When you need me but do not want me, then I must stay. When you want me but no longer need me, then I have to go.” She bangs her stick, and the children are suddenly hitting themselves instead of each other. Eventually they agree to Nanny McPhee’s demand to stop what they are doing and apologize. Lesson One, to stop fighting, is complete. Later that evening, Nanny McPhee continues to give the children a taste of their own medicine. When they refuse to share beds and say they’d rather share with a goat or a cow or an elephant, Nanny McPhee bangs her stick and the children are forced to make room for each other as well as for the animals they’d named. Lesson Two, to share nicely, is complete. When Phil lets the family’s valuable piglets escape in an attempt to make Mrs. Green desperate enough to sell the farm, Nanny McPhee uses her magic to force the children to cooperate in the search, and even to enjoy each other’s company. Working together, the children manage to capture the piglets and return them in time to be sold to the Greens’ neighbor, Farmer Macreadie (BILL BAILEY). Lesson Three, to help each other, is complete. The children are just starting to get along, and Mrs. Green is finally becoming more relaxed, when a telegram arrives bearing the terrible news that Mr. Green has been killed in the war. Everyone is overcome with grief except for Norman, who “feels it in his bones” that his father is alive. Cyril offers help—his father, Lord Gray (two-time Academy Award® nominee RALPH FIENNES), is “very high up in the War Office” and can find out what’s happened to Mr. Green if only they can find a way to get to London. Before long, they’re being whisked across the countryside in the sidecar of a motorcycle driven by none other than Nanny McPhee. Back at home, Megsie and Celia find a note from Norman telling them where he and Cyril have gone and why. The girls realize they have to prevent Mrs. Green from selling the farm while Norman is gone. But later that morning, Phil shows up with a sale contract and a pen. The girls try to stall him, but time is running out. Cyril and Norman have an adventurous ride to London, and then arrive at the office of Cyril’s imperious father. At first Lord Gray dismisses the boys’ request, but Cyril stands up to his father for the first time and demands his help. Lord Gray looks into the matter and reveals that Rory Green is missing in action, not killed, and that no telegram was sent from the War Office. Norman realizes that his wicked Uncle Phil has forged the telegram for his own purposes and that he and Cyril must get home right away. Back at the farm, Megsie and Celia do their best to prevent Mrs. Green from signing Phil’s contract, but eventually Megsie loses hope. She whispers urgently, “Nanny McPhee, we need you!” Suddenly, a baby elephant—the same one that Nanny McPhee had deployed earlier for the lesson in sharing—appears in the kitchen. When Phil and Mrs. Green aren’t looking, the baby elephant sucks every pen in sight into its trunk. The children are delighted and Phil is temporarily confounded, but he eventually finds another pen and forces it into Mrs. Green’s hand. All seems lost, but suddenly a passing enemy plane accidentally drops a bomb into the Greens’ barley field, exactly as Mr. Docherty had predicted. The thud causes the ink to spill and ruin the contract, but the bomb doesn’t explode. The boys return and Norman tells his mother that Mr. Green is missing but not dead. Mr. Docherty faints at the prospect of actually defusing a bomb, and the children realize they have to do it themselves. In the end, the children defuse the bomb and Lesson Four, to be brave, is complete. Phil is arrested, the harvest is brought in by Nanny McPhee’s magic, the children have become friends, and Mrs. Green’s life has at last become manageable. Lesson Five, to have faith, is complete, and it’s time for Nanny McPhee to go. Genres: Family Comedy Starring: Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rhys Ifans and Maggie Smith Piranha 3D

* Nestle o At the Harrogate conference there was a BNFL stall there and Mark couldn't resist running up to them and shouting "see you soon"! * Aldermaston o Did a bit on Sellafield in a previous series. BNFL have had to spend nearly a million quid fixing things to stop the seagulls getting contaminated. o They claim they have an excellent safety record and are very open about any accidents. o This year they have had a nitric acid spill that hospitalised 2 people, they have an allegedly forged health and monitoring certificate, incomplete forms on a nuclear flask and, because a sealed source went missing, they got an improvement notice served on them. o Managed to get hold of some of their on-site briefing on health and safety. o A cable with a plug at one end and bare wires at the other was found plugged in at Thorpe (a repeat occurrence). o BNFL are in a consortium with Lockheed-Martin who had a stall at the labour party conference this year, not that they wish to influence anybody about winning the contract to run Aldermaston. o Aldermaston AWE currently run by Hunting Brae. o 2 months into their contract a worker misread a label and poured liquid tritium somewhere he shouldn't have resulting in Tritium being found in the nearby Aldermaston stream which feed the river Kennet which supplies Reading with some of it's drinking water. o 1997 they start doing managed discharges into the Aldermaston stream without permission. They are allowed to discharge nuclear waste but they have to do it through the Pangbourne pipeline. o Environment agency found out and held a public meeting at Beale Park, Pangbourne on 5th October 1999. Mark decided to attend. o They claim the environment agency knew about the discharges in 1997 but the environment agency say they only found out about them in 1999. o Mark goes down to Aldermaston where there are signs saying "Photography, sketching and carrying of cameras forbidden"! o On the same day a local MP (Martin Salter) was visiting the site and Mark managed to get hold of his mobile phone number. Took along a skycrane and phoned him from the top of it. o He agrees to a chat afterwards in the crane. o He isn't impressed with the facilities at the site. Current management don't know what's on the site due to the MOD's previous behaviour who just used to bury things on the site. o Aldermaston agree to the interview at 2:30 the next day. o Meet with Dr John Crofts, the "assurance director" of AWE Hunting Brae, who says they are trying to be more open but this is obviously quite painful because we have to get over some embarrassments. They call it "the pain barrier" and you have to get through the pain barrier. o Mark says "I am part of that barrier". o Don't find radioactivity, but there was a movement of Plutonium during a flash flood. Also admits Uranium leaked onto someone else's land. o Started to talk about the people who had been contaminated and went through the 14 cases and he gets the number down to 11, but then admits there have been some more accidents making the total 14. o Mark finds out the plutonium is less well packed than his sandwiches at school. o Mark commends them on their openness and suggests a visitor centre. Dr Crofts says that has been a pipe-dream of theirs for some time! o Put a sign up advertising Visitor centre coming soon.
