Josiah McElheny: History & Originality
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 20:45:46 10/09/09
Episode #077: Artist Josiah McElheny discusses the relationship between artworks and the context in which they were created, highlighting the distinctions between history and the personal and interpretive reinvention of historical facts.
Josiah McElheny creates finely crafted, handmade glass objects that he combines with photographs, text, and museological displays to evoke notions of meaning and memory. McElheny's work takes as its subject the object, idea, and social nexus of glass. Influenced by the writings of Jorge Luis Borges, McElheny's work often takes the form of historical fictions. Part of McElheny's fascination with storytelling is that glassmaking is part of an oral tradition handed down generation to generation, artisan to artisan. Sculptural models of Modernist ideals, these totally reflective environments are both elegant seductions as well as parables of the vices of utopian aspirations.

Insubordinate Episode 1 "Preemptive Hype"
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 15:25:53 06/06/06
Mike O'Toole's post production brain child finally sees the light of day, in this visual shock of the senses. Upon months of collaboration, and years of talk, "INSUBORDINATE" is officially born, and unleashed upon thousands of unsuspecting viewers. In the tradition of music videos, reality TV, youth perspective and askew comedy, comes a nontraditional project that is a true visual trip and unlike any series you've ever seen! Insubordinate's first episode, "Preemptive Hype" references the relentless nature of mainstream media, while at the same time, poking fun at itself, as Insubordinate has been promoted in one form or another since 2001, with it just recently premiering in heavy rotation in the Boston area, and now the web. INSUBORDINATE, was a MA based public access cable tv show, and has since become a counterculture for the creators as well as their viewers. Aiming to reinvent the "Guerilla Television" movement of the early days of cable, the show focuses on all forms of artistry, utilizing an element of physical comedy and reality tv in it's visual presentation, emphasizing its consistent unique editing style. INSUBORDINATE prides itself on bringing you something as visually stunning and entertaining, as it is mentally stimulating and creatively inspiring. Based on the simple idea that homegrown television should be raw and innovative in it's every approach, the team at Insubordinate Projects Ltd produces a program that will not only have you watching for each episode's full duration, but more so talking about it for days on end. For any video producer, it is a constant challenge to keep things new and fresh for the viewer. What makes the INSUBORDINATE product different, is that we are not bound by any limitations, one way or the other. From a creative standpoint, "INSUBORDINATE" equals freedom; in individual approach and personal interpretation! INSUBORDINATE is the collective voice of "the others" - the downtrodden, the dispossessed- holding the torch aloft for everyone who has ever been cast aside. You don't have to know the show to join the "Insubordi-Nation" fan group-you'll get to know it! For now, check out our website at http://www.InsubordinateTV.tk to watch clips and get more info! If you'd like a tape or DVD, we can get you one! If you have a video piece, poetry, are a musician or any other kind of "alternative artist" let us know! It is ultimately impossible to articulate the true essence of InsubordinAte; you'll have to check us out! "InsubordinAte" is the name of the show, created by Mike O'Toole, but it is also the name of the group which is involved in it; currently consisting of a colorful group of eclectic rebels. Join our fan club here; You are The Insubordi-Nation! It's politically incorrect social commentary with a punk rock sensibility. But we're not a band; we like to think we are. We rock in music and the arts, via tricked-out visual communications! We all hope you have as much fun watching the show as we have in creating it. Yeah DUDE.
