Turbid North Live in Studio B
[LESS INFO] 11 VIEWS | ADDED 21:22:58 10/12/11
Turbid North performs live in Studio B of Mevio in San Francisco
About Turbid North:
“I was reading a book of Alaskan survival stories and one of the stories struck me as an inspiration” Nick Forkel (guitar/vocal) of Turbid North relates the inspiration to the band’s new album “Orogeny.” “It was the story of this hunter who was trapped in the wilderness at the height of winter and things got worse and worse for him. His will to survive and his hunter’s instinct helped him to overcome this hell and the album follows that. It’s about overcoming the odds no matter how grim and the survival instinct we all have.” Self-proclaimed Alaskan mountain metal Turbid North’s sound retains the galloping thrash of early 80’s period of bands like Metallica and Kreator, the technical and abrasive shredding of modern death metal and even moments of bluesy and flowing solos reminiscient of Randy Rhoades period Ozzy. The songs are as epic as the storyline of the hunter and the fully painted artwork that adorns each page reflects the story. The artwork was done by Alex Rydlinski (guitar) and even contains a lost touchstone of metal, the bad-ass mascot (see pic above) “We call him Snow Death” says Forkel, “he represents old man winter throwing everything he can to make the hunter fail.”
The story of Turbid North parallels the hunter as they both have a strong drive to survive and meet challenges. The band started in North Pole, Alaska back in 2001 right near Fairbanks. Original members Forkel, Rydlinski and his brother Adam Rydlinski (drums) were accomplished musicians with Adam even spending time in the Alaskan Symphony Orchestra. “We quickly made it to the top of the Fairbanks metal scene” says Forkel “but there was really no where to go from there.” Though big acts in the world of heavy music rarely came, when they did come Turbid North were selected as the opening band. The group opened for Darkest Hour, Godsmack (twice), Adema and their show with Drowning Pool changed their lives. “The guys in Drowning Pool watched us and said you guys are great but you’ll never make it if you stay here. They told us that the scene in their home area of Dallas/Ft Worth Texas was great and that we could really make a name out there.” The band worked full time as Lumber Jacks saving up all their money and a little over three years ago picked up and moved to Fort Worth, Texas.
The band entrenched themselves in the live music scene, making a sizeable dent in the Texas metal scene building a respectable audience. Leaving their original bassist in Alaska, the band came to the attention of Chris O’Toole, who recently moved from the UK to Texas strangely enough. O’Toole sent audition videos from the UK to the band and joined their ranks. In 2009 the original vocalist left to return to Alaska and his replacement was Brian McCoy, ex vocalist of Debri, who won the Ozzfest Battle Of The Bands in 2008. Today the band lives together in the same house where they recorded Orogeny in their home studio by Forkel. They have done multiple regional tours through the Texas and surrounding areas playing with such artists as Goatwhore and Skeletonwitch.
The band plans to embark on another tour this fall and a video paralleling the album’s story is in the works.

Conserving Biodiversity On Coastal Lands In Hawai`I
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 04:49:41 08/06/09
Sam Gon presenting. Native biodiversity found on coastal lands in Hawai'i are threatened by rising sea levels due to climate change, as well as other critical threats. In 2008, The Nature Conservancy completed a statewide assessment identifying conservation targets that represent coastal biodiversity, and mapping these targets across the main islands. The purpose of this biodiversity assessment is to understand the total distribution and viability of these biodiversity targets on coastal lands, as a first step toward anticipating change along coastlines due to development and climate. This evaluation process spotlighted a few key findings and strategies specific to biodiversity on coastal lands: Some targets, such as anchialine pools, are largely restricted to a single island, and require a combination of redundant protection there, as well as efforts to ensure representation across the archipelago. The geographic placement of important coastal areas ties into both terrestrial efforts and marine protection efforts, such that a more holistic approach, mirroring ahupua'a management, can be identified across the archipelago. By filling in the information gap of the statewide status of these biodiversity targets on coastal lands, the need for conservation actions is clearer and more urgent. We have identified a subset of the most viable examples of the coastal conservation targets, such that roughly 20% of the coast is identified as a high priority arena for action. TNC has identified this portfolio of sites necessary for seabirds, anchialine pools and coastal vegetation to persist into the future.

Crimanimalz - So. Cal Freeway Ride
[LESS INFO] 4 VIEWS | ADDED 00:42:43 08/26/08
Text from the Crimanimalz:
Mission
The ride's political stance and agenda was neutral, many participants invoked the group's collective motto: "If you rode a bicycle, you'd be home by now!" -- a statement against oil dependency, in support of sustainable living and a collective critique of the Los Angeles transportation infrastructure. The riders are pointing out that in a city like Los Angeles made for cars, bicycle riders are reaching their destinations faster.
Long Term Goals
Members of the CRIMANIMALZ are looking for city officials to make bicycle safety a priority, not only through the creation of safe and easy places to ride, but also as a means of transportation on the city's increasingly busy thoroughfares. With rising gas prices and a government encouraging sustainable practices, more people are expected to turn to bikes as an alternative means of transportation.

The Ride Friday, May 9th, 2008
At 5:30pm starting in Santa Monica, 28 bicyclists took surface streets to the 1-10 Fwy at Bundy and rode 0.44 miles to the I-405 N on-ramp and rode another 1.56 miles to the Santa Monica Blvd. exit during rush hour. The ramp to the I-405 N was a steep grade and 0.65 miles in length. Riders spanned a total of 2.0 freeway miles.
The group of riders also hung a 20'x6' banner on the 17th street overpass overlooking the eastbound I-10 Freeway in Santa Monica that read RIDE A BIKE YOU'D BE HOME BY NOW.
The sign remained in place for over 48 hours.
