Huge crowds gathered in Trafalgar Square to usher in the Year of the Dragon... complete with politicians, celebrations, and well wishes. On Sunday, thousands of people gathered in Trafalgar Square in London to celebrate the beginning of the Year of the Dragon, which officially began on January 23. London is home to the largest Chinese New Year celebration outside of Asia. The festivities featured 100 world-class performers, including the Chen Brothers, who currently hold the Guinness World Record for the highest pole jump in the lion dance. The London Mayor Boris Johnson was on site, lending a hand in the Dotting of the Eye Ceremony, which traditionally brings the lions and dragons to life. Members of Melbourne's Federation of Chinese Association welcomed Ms Gillard to the festival, performing the traditional dragon dance. Apparently, poor care by prison authorities is contributing to an attempt - quote unquote - "to kill" her. The deputy head of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's political party says that Tymoshenko's life is in danger. Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv on Tuesday, he said Tymoshenko's health is failing and she's not getting satisfactory care at the prison where she is serving a seven-year sentence. The 51-year-old is being held in a prison in Kharkiv some 300 miles away from the capital Kyiv. [Oleksander Turchinov, Deputy Head Batkivshchyna Party]: "On Friday, January 6, at approximately 22:30, Yulia Volodymyrivna Tymoshenko suddenly fainted right after taking medicine given to her by prison staff for her cold. For 20 minutes, her cell mate was bumping into the door trying to call medical staff. Only after the 24:00 they (medical staff) managed to overcome her critical condition and bring her back to life." Tymoshenko, a charismatic politician, helped lead the 2004 Orange Revolution street protests which thwarted a first bid for the presidency by Viktor Yanukovich. Here's more. Iran and Turkey sought on Thursday to ease tensions over a NATO missile shield and the Arab uprisings. On a state visit to Tehran, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu assured his counterpart, Ali Akbar Salehi, that Ankara would never allow an attack on Iran from its territory. Davutoglu's 2-day trip to Iran came after a year in which Turkey and Iran fell out over the NATO missile system. Concerned that the NATO system could neutralize Iran's own defenses in the event of an attack by Israel, some Iranian politicians even suggested bombing the installations such as a NATO missile early warning system set up on Turkish soil. Salehi reassured Davutoglu in December that such a course of action was not Iranian government policy. Davutoglu says the NATO's defensive shield missile system was in actual fact purely defensive and that the purpose of the system was not to attack any of Turkey's neighbours.
