Welcome to Crochet 101! In this post, I'll introduce you to the basics of crochet and give you all of the information that you'll need to select your tools and get started. In the video above, I'll show you how to attach the yarn to the hook and make your foundation chain, then I'll teach you three basic stitches: single crochet, double crochet, and slip stitch. After that, I'll show you how to fix mistakes and finish off your work. Below, you'll also find a glossary of the crochet vocabulary words that I use in the video, plus brief overview of how hook sizes and yarn weights work so you'll know what you're looking for when you first visit the yarn store. When you're done, you'll have the skills that you need to complete your own basic square or rectangular projects, and a solid background that you can take with you as you move on to more complex stitches and patterns.

Mapbag: Josh Billions (video)

Josh Billions demonstrates the Mapbag at Maker Faire Bay Area 2011 . It is a bicycle messenger bag with a ring of vibrating motors sewn into its strap, whose positions correspond to compass points. This soft circuit project uses a LilyPad Arduino in conjunction with the GPS feature in an iPhone, allowing the user to set a destination and be given constant haptic feedback through the fabric in order to stay on course. Mapbag acts as an exploratory wayfinding tool - a fun and useful alternative to a standard turn-by-turn map.

Silhouette Dog Portrait Using Illustrator

My adoration for my canine companions rivals the deepest love affairs in history, and I am always looking for new ways to celebrate how amazing they are.
In keeping with this month's Design & Photography theme, in today's video I show you how to create your own custom silhouette piece using Adobe Illustrator and a robot cutter (the aptly-named Silhouette machine ). I describe a low-tech option as well, so never fear, non-tech friends.
Do not fear Illustrator or the robot, this was my first time using both and my silhouettes turned out great! This is encouraging me to try new tools and programs I have yet to master.
