Whistleblowers: Daniel Ellsberg on Bradley Manning and WikiLeaks

"Pentagon Papers" whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg weighs in on the case of U.S. Army P.F.C. Bradley Manning, who currently stands accused of leaking over 260,000 secret U.S. diplomatic cables to the website WikiLeaks.
"I recognized someone who was in the same spirit as I was forty years ago," says Ellsberg. "He's a hero of mine."
-----
This excerpt is taken from a program featuring Daniel Ellsberg discussing Howard Zinn's final original book, "The Bomb." It was recorded in collaboration with City Lights Bookstore, on September 29, 2010.
During the war, Howard Zinn had taken part in the aerial bombing of Royan, France, and in 1966, he went to Hiroshima, where he was invited to a "house of rest" where survivors of the bombing gathered. In this short and powerful book, the backstory of the making and use of the bomb, Zinn offers his deep personal reflections and political analysis of these events, and the profound influence they had in transforming him from an order-taking combat soldier to one of our greatest anti-authoritarian, anti-war historians. - City Lights Bookstore
Daniel Ellsberg, a former U.S. military analyst employed by the RAND Corporation, sparked a national controversy in 1971 when he released the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times.
The Pentagon Papers revealed that the government knew early on that the Vietnam War was not likely winnable and would lead to many times more casualties than ever admitted. After failing to persuade a few U.S. Senators to release the papers on the Senate floor, Ellsberg decided to risk prison and leaked the documents to the New York Times. Ellsberg went underground for 16 days before turning himself in. Fortunately, the charges against him were eventually dropped due to gross government misconduct and illegal evidence gathering by the Nixon administration and the notorious White House "Plumbers Unit."
These efforts included breaking into Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office and were undertaken directly by the Nixon White House to smear and discredit Ellsberg in the news media in retaliation for his Pentagon Papers whistleblowing.

Was meinen Sie? Balance...to keep one's 'balance'...
Life is a juggling act...It really is a juggling act........If one loses ones balance, well then, it would seem logical that one would probably have a nasty fall!!! Wouldn't it???
Have I already lost your attention...well if your attention span is anything like that of my own...well let's just hope that it isn't! Now the balance of life....everything in moderation...love anything too much, or care for anything to little...well now, this upsets the delicate balance of life that most of us seem to juggle well enough, at least well enough for us to maintain some sort of stability, in a rather unstable universe! "Keeps a roof over my head, and food on da table" said Mr Jones. But there are some of us who upset this delicate balance so much, and in such a way, that the ability to maintain becomes such a matter of difficulty, that the effect of this illusion, of having his or her 'shit together' becomes a real bitch to pull off! Can u dig what I'm saying? "Man, you know that dude 'conkling'...he freakin' lost his balance and fell off the wagon!!!" And you know what happens to those who lose there balance? Well they have to rehabilitate themselves of course!!! REHAB!!!...u can ask Lindsey Lohan about that...Fucking Balance..."you've really overturned the scales this time"...Why is he going on and on about balance? you're asking yourself about now???
________________________________________ ________________________________________ ____________________________
Because the delicate balance of life itself, is at stake!!! I'm spouting off about a world gone mad...MAD!!! If you think that I'm being a bit of a 'drama queen' or 'just full of shit' or a "melodramatic imbecile"...it's a matter of opinion man! The pendulum just fuckin broke!!! The scales of balance don't work no more...We're sucking on the "tit" of Greed, Power and Oil!!! It is sustaining war and killing the environment, and last but not least...It is killing us!...It will kill us! "god's tears are everywhere"!!! Why are men, women and children dying from starvation everyday when there is more then enough food to feed everyone? Why must we insist on using oil and fossil fuels as if it's the only possible source of energy?
Why are we fighting a war against terrorism on the other side of the world, when our borders are wide open? Why are there 'poppy' fields in bloom and blossoming all over Afghanistan right under the US military's noses? Why did it take 5 days for the government to send aid to the victims of hurricane Katrina? Why are we paying an income tax? Why did AT%T censor Eddie Vedder's remarks about President Bush while broadcasting a live pearl jam concert? What really happened to Pat Tillman?
Why won't the US government ever hold themselves accountable for anything? Putting conspiracy theories aside...in all honesty...what the hell is going on?
It feels strange not being able to trust in something that you've always trusted in...doesn't it? http://www.ralphbuckley.com
