On January 1, several hundred demonstrators, as well as friends and supporters of the family of Oscar Grant and other victims of police repression, marched from downtown Oakland to the Fruitvale BART station where a rally was held. The annual march and rally is to show that Oscar Grant, who was murdered by BART police officer Johannes Mehserle in 2009, is gone but not forgotten, and to also denounce police violence everywhere, but especially in Oakland where the problem is particularly bad. The sponsors of the event were the Oscar Grant Committee, Occupy Oakland, and Bring the Ruckus. Video footage includes the following speakers at the rally: Wanda Johnson (mother of Oscar Grant), Kenneth Carruthers, Denika Chatman, Danny Garcia, Sharena Curely, Anita Wills, and Khali.

You can see our website here: www.decolonizepdx.weebly.com (video will be added soon to website). Decolonize PDX is a new collective in Portland Oregon, and could use your support! Love and Struggle, Decolonize PDX Decolonize PDX is a collective of people of color. We decolonize because we know this land is already occupied. We decolonize because communities of color have been on the front lines of the 99 percent here and globally for centuries. We decolonize because the system is not broken; it is working exactly the way it was intended. We decolonize because any movement that doesn't acknowledge this replicates oppression.

The first evening of the De-Colonize/Occupy Oakland Teepee. Messages and drawings were being sewn on the the teepee, which was encircled by candles. There are images of historical Native leaders, as well as an image of Native activist and academic Lehman Brightman, founder of the first Native studies program in the country at UC Berkeley. As the police are enforcing a curfew in Oscar Grant Plaza, the teepee was taken down for the night til the next day of vigil. As enough people join up with the vigil, the teepee could be left in place 24 hours daily.

After a long day of General Strike marches and bank closures throughout downtown, and the shutdown of the Port of Oakland by tens of thousands of demonstrators, the former Travelers Aid Society building on 16th Street, just north of Oscar Grant Plaza, was briefly occupied starting at about 10pm. Banners were hung from the roof on the front and side of the building while books were sorted for what was to be a public library in the "Raheim Brown Community Center" and hundreds of people danced and conversed in the street outside. Shortly before midnight, hundreds of Oakland police in riot gear arrived on 17th Street. In the next hour, the barricade on 16th and Telegraph was set on fire, police dispersed massive amounts of tear gas, and over one hundred people were arrested.

Recognizing that Egyptians, in many ways the inspiration for the current Occupy Wall Street movement, marched in solidarity with Occupy Oakland after the police raid and attacks at Oscar Grant Plaza on October 25th, Occupy Oakland's General Assembly returned the favor by calling for a march on November 12th and releasing a statement in solidarity with Egypt. When the march stopped in front of the North County/Glenn Dwyer jail on 7th Street, speakers addressed the issue of political prisoners worldwide, the Egyptian revolution, and the jailing of Alaa Abd El-Fatah by the Egyptian military just days after he had marched with Occupy Oakland on October 26th.
