Enterprise Video Trends: A Real World Perspective - Nick Balletta, CEO, Talkpoint
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 05:14:43 12/15/11
Nick Balletta has been in the live webcasting business for a long time, and as CEO of Talkpoint, his company has helped shape the online video industry by providing clients, the technology and services to build scalable video communications. Talkpoint's predecessor – NextVenue – pioneered the live interactive webcasts since 1998, and its roots that go back to CNBC/Dow Jones desktop video. Talkpoint operates as a SaaS based model with overlay production services for large, live, interactive and secure video and audio webcasts. It facilitates more than 20,000 live webcasting events per year for the top Fortune 500 and FTSE 100 companies. I caught up with Balletta again earlier this year to talk about the latest enterprise video trends. He shared the latest real world data his company had collected over the last two years, that showed a significant growth in both the adoption and expansion of video within enterprise communications. I first spoke with Balletta last year at Streaming Media East, where he told me that webcasting for enterprise communications may finally be reaching a tipping point. Anecdotes from TalkPoint..... • Self Service Video webcasting increasing • Automation (Saas) • Flexible Signal Acquisition • Ease of use • Flash viewership is on the rise • Live streaming • Not just progressive downloads • IT staffs adding support (Proxy servers, firewalls) • The battle for video standards creates opportunity • Adobe, Apple, Microsoft • Enterprise users don’t care about HTML5....yet • Even with video webcasting on the rise audio webcasting is here to stay

Khan Academy's YouTube Revolution: A New Way to Teach Everything
[LESS INFO] 100 VIEWS | ADDED 00:07:29 09/24/11
Khan Academy founder Salman Khan explains the concepts driving his wildly popular (and free) YouTube-based lecture series. Could this be the groundwork for a new classroom model? This program was recorded in collaboration with WIRED Business Conference 2011, on May 3, 2011.
Salman Khan, Founder, Khan Academy
in conversation with Clive Thompson, Contributing Editor, WIRED
Salman Khan is the founder and one-man faculty of the Khan Academy, a nonprofit with the mission of providing free, high-quality education to "anyone, anywhere" in the world. A hedge fund analyst with degrees from MIT and Harvard, Khan was helping a young cousin with math in 2004, communicating by phone and using an interactive notepad. When others expressed interest, he began posting videos of his hand-scribbled tutorials on YouTube. Demand took off, and in 2009 he quit his day job. The Khan Academy website now provides self-pacing software and unlimited access to over 2,200 instructional videos on its YouTube channel, targeting the K-12 grade levels. It's the most-used library of educational videos on the web, with over a million unique students per month and over 45 million lessons delivered. In 2009, the academy received the Microsoft Tech Award for Education. The following year, it was selected from among 150,000 submissions as one of five "world-changing" ideas in Google's Project 10^100.

Google's Justin Baird Pitches Idea for 'Radically Inclusive Democracy'
[LESS INFO] 85 VIEWS | ADDED 00:10:27 08/02/11
Google innovationist Justin Baird presents his proposal for global governance innovation, an idea he calls "radically inclusive democracy." Baird explains that radical inclusion can be applied to civil services, such as voting, where casting ballots online is fast, unbiased, accurate, and inexpensive. "The global community benefits from having this transparent democratic process," says Baird.

Google’s dominance of the internet is “a dangerous development for the future of democratic society”, the UK Government’s digital adviser, Lord David Puttnam, recently warned. Lord Puttnam said he feared Google could try to “dictate terms” with a future government, in the same way that oil companies attempted to shape the policies of previous US administrations.
Needless to say, as a Google employee and certified techno-geek, Justin Baird doesn’t agree. Instead, he sees the digital revolution as the greatest explosion of access to information the world has ever seen. Far from being a bad thing, he argues that the potential for creativity, the ability to connect and communicate and the ability to have ones voice heard is driving fundamental societal change. So, is the digital revolution leading us to a more democratic, more environmentally and socially conscious future? And better business models? - Australian Broadcasting Corporation
Justin Baird is an Innovationist at Google Australia. During his tenure at Google, Justin has helped launch local YouTube portals across Asia Pacific, helped launch the first Android mobile devices in the region, brought the Google Creative Sandbox event to Australia's shores, and co-created DNA, a digital thought leadership series in Australia and New Zealand. Justin is also actively involved in Google's philanthropic efforts to help drive positive change through technology.

Pervert in New York City! GOOBERS!

"If someone asks you to shut off your camera becuase they dont like what you do it! I dont condone this sort of crap NOR do i support it! [news] A photo shoot involving a teen model in New York City was abandoned after a bystander began filming her inappropriately. The girl's mother as well as bystanders confronted the man as he began zooming in his video camera on her bottom as she was photographed doing ballet poses in Times Square. But the man resisted efforts to stop him filming, arguing his right to videotape anything in public even after a cyclist threatened him. The teen model and the photography crew left as the man repeatedly called the cyclist a ""goober"". The exchange has since become a growing viral video hit and sparked an online debate about the rights of filming people in public places. Photographer and outspoken free speech advocate Carlos Miller has defended the cameraman. ""So this hot chick is spreading her legs in a ballerina pose in the middle of busy Manhattan for some type of photo shoot when a random guy walks up and starts videotaping her ass,"" Miller wrote in his blog, Photography Is Not A Crime. ""This prompts some of her friends to berate the guy for being a pervert, even though they were essentially doing the same thing, except with still cameras."" But several commentators on Miller's blog criticised his opinion, saying that the man deserved to be harassed. ""What he was doing was technically legal, but it is antisocial, ethically wrong, and just slimy,"" wrote one viewer. ""I'm glad someone got in his face. Just because something is legal, doesn't make it right."""

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings discusses how the company has been focused on streaming video via the Internet since its beginnings, but "the network wasn't big enough." Now he predicts gigabit to the home access within the next ten years.

Reed Hastings co-founded Netflix in 1997 and has led the company since its earliest days. The firm's innovative business model soon transformed the video rental landscape, as little red envelopes supplanted brick-and-mortar chain stores. Netflix withstood copycat challenges from large, established retailers and in 2007 lapped its competitors by launching Internet streaming. Today, the company has more than 20 million subscribers.
An engineer by training, Reed also founded Pure Software in 1991, a company that created software development tools. He built Pure into one of the world's 50 largest software firms before selling it in 1997. Reed is an active educational philanthropist and served as president of the California State Board of Education from 2000 to 2004. In 2005 he was named to Time magazine's list of the world's 100 most influential people, and in 2010 he was honored by Barron's as one of our most respected CEOs and by Fortune as Business Person of the Year.

Authors@Google: Rachel Botsman and Roo Rogers on Collaborative Consumption
What is Collaborative Consumption? And who is doing it? Collaborative Consumption is the organized sharing, bartering, lending, trading, renting, gifting, and swapping through online and real-world communities. From social lending (Zopa) to car sharing (Zipcar) and co-working (HubCulture), from peer-to-peer rental (Zilok) to collaborative travel (Air BnB) and neighborhood sharing schemes (WeCommune)... people are already using the principles and dynamics of Collaborative Consumption%mdashwithout even knowing it. Along the way, they are getting the same fulfillment and benefits of actual ownership while saving money and lowering their environmental impact. Today, more and more consumers are opting for access over ownership, and use over possession. The philosophy behind this idea is not new%mdashcarpooling, staying with friends and relatives when traveling, checking a book out from library%mdashare age-old examples of Collaborative Consumption. But today, propelled by web-enabled technologies and economic and environmental imperatives, a surge is taking place with new sharing models and business opportunities emerging every day. The authors explore this phenomenon with numerous examples, and by dividing companies and organizations into three systems (see a detailed list on the following page and on their site): Producer service systems: * Pay for the benefit of using a product without needing to own the product outright.
