And now that he's probably at the end of the line, he finally learns to play the game: Namely, to lie, exaggerate and deny with the best of them. > STEPHANOPOULOS: Governor Perry, thanks for joining us this morning. PERRY: Good morning, George. How are you? STEPHANOPOULOS: I'm doing well. Thank you. Less than a week to go in South Carolina, you're still lagging far behind. To borrow a metaphor from your home state, has South Carolina become your Alamo? PERRY: I don't think so. But we get out every day and go take our message of job creation, and, you know, we're the most consistent fiscal conservative and social conservative in the race, and that's our message, both on the airwaves and out on the campaign trail. The retail politics in South Carolina has been awesome. STEPHANOPOULOS: But as you know, Governor, that big group of social conservatives meeting in Texas yesterday, decided you're not the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney. They want Rick Santorum to have that mantle. You didn't even make the final ballot. PERRY: Well, that's what they said about Ronald Reagan as well, that, you know, he was unelectable, he was not the one that they wanted to pick. But South Carolina citizens said, you know what, he is. So we'll wait and see Saturday what the people of South Carolina say. STEPHANOPOULOS: What is your message this final week? PERRY: Well, it's all about jobs and getting this country back working again. I'm -- 11 years of executive governing experience that have created a million jobs in my home state , the 13th largest economy in the world. I keep the taxes low, the regulatory climate fair and predictable, a legal system that doesn't allow for oversuing. And in a state that's got quite a military history and a lot of veterans here, I think they're looking for a president who not only has worn the uniform of the country, but also has been the commander in chief of 20,000-plus National Guard troops that have been deployed multiple times. They know my commitment to the men and women of the military, and we'll stand with them and support them over the course of the years. As we already know, Texas has a "weak governor," one whose powers and responsibilities are few. We see how well that same "executive governing experience" prepared George W. Bush to be president. > STEPHANOPOULOS: Governor, as you know, you have taken some heat this week from many Republicans for your attacks on Mitt Romney as a vulture capitalist during his time at Bain Capital. Want to read some of them here. Sean Hannity said, "it almost sounds like Occupy Wall Street." Rudy Giuliani, "it's ignorant and dumb." Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina, "it really gives the Democrats a lot of fodder." Any regrets for using that phrase? PERRY: I think the issue -- it's not a new phrase. It was used by Stewart Stephens (ph), who was one of Mitt Romney's consultants, against Meg Whitman. I think the issue for everyone is, look, this is something that we knew wasn't going to come up. And it's better to be talking about it here in January in South Carolina than it is in September and October with a nominee. So if it's a fatal flaw, then we need to talk about it now. The issue has been about who's best prepared and who has the background of creating jobs, and that's what those comments were always about, was that, who is the job creator that's on that stage, and I will submit to you that my job creation record is incomparable when it comes to the other candidates on that stage. Oh yeah, there's the little fact that most of the jobs created in Texas were federal jobs. > STEPHANOPOULOS: So you don't buy Mitt Romney's argument that at Bain he created more than 100,000 jobs? PERRY: I think, you know, the issue is, what is the total -- it's just like Sarah Palin, when Sarah asked that question, she said, you know, that's really what this issue is all about, not whether or not did the Bain Capital is a job creator or not, but did they really create that many jobs? So, yes, I think the question is out there, and it's a good conversation to have. We're going to get tested by Obama and his group. So, you better have all of these answers done early. No surprises in September and October. STEPHANOPOULOS: But I think what a lot of Republicans are worried about, is they're going to hear that phrase "vulture capitalism" coming out of your mouth, from President Obama and the Democrats in the fall? PERRY: Well, the issue is about job creation. And as I said, I think if this is a fatal flaw, it needs to be talked about now, rather than in September. So, you know, we're talking about it, and the people of South Carolina will decide whether or not that's a problem or not. STEPHANOPOULOS: So, Governor Perry, what is your plan going forward? If you don't come in first or a close second in South Carolina, is that it for your campaign? PERRY: Well, we'll make that decision on Saturday. Our intention is to win South Carolina and go forward from there. But to try to plan out your campaign months in advance, I think is a little bit of a stretch. Promises was a Canadian based pop group which was founded 1978 in Thousand Oaks, California. The members were the siblings Leslie Maria Knauer (born August 20, 1957, Vancouver, vocals), Jed Knauer (born July 17, 1955, Toronto, guitar, piano) and Benny Knauer (born October 21, 1958, Vancouver, keyboards). Their father Peter Knauer is a German from Hamburg who moved with his children from Canada to California in the late 1960s. He was also the manager of the band and has played keyboards. Their album "Promises" which was recorded by EMI Electrola record producer Steve Verroca became a flop in the USA and in the UK but their single "Baby It's You" became a smash hit in Europe (especially in Germany where it reached number 4 in the charts) in February 1979 and Promises received a Gold album for more than 250,000 selling units. The song was also hugely popular in Australia, largely due to weekly programming of the original film clip on Saturday evening television variety show Hey Hey It's Saturday. The song was subsequently released on a highly popular compilation album in that market. It also reached number one on the New Zealand Singles Chart for five weeks. "Baby It's You" was also a success in South Africa, also appearing on Volume 7 of that country's long running compilation album series Pop Shop. The video received a lot of airplay on South African television too. Under manager Toby Mamis, the group entered the studio to record a U.S. album on Capitol Records produced by Jack Nitzsche, but discordance with that producer resulted in the plug being pulled on the sessions. After the second single "Let's Get Back Together" became much less successful (only number 18 in Germany), the group split. Leslie Knauer (Knauer-Wasser during a relationship with photographer Julian Wasser) later became a member with the groups Precious Metal (1983-1992) represented by music attorney Stann Findelle, who made their first recording deal with Polygram and the group went on to also record on Chameleon Records, and Kanary (2004) and sang two songs for the Dennis Hopper movie, Choke (2001).

It's that time of year again... back to school shopping will start all too soon and parents will be sorting through clothing & toys to decide what still fits and what needs to be replaced. Almost a year and a half ago I discovered a new favorite hobby in bargain shopping called Children's Consignment Sales. I posted a blog last summer about my initial experiences with consignment shopping. Since then I can easily say that I've been to more than a dozen sales total, which are kind of like giant cooperative yard sales. I'm still by no means an expert, but do eagerly look forward to the chance to get nearly-brand-new clothing and toys for my child for about 25% of the original retail cost. Even toys or "play clothes" that look a little worn work fine for a toddler... she doesn't care or know the difference! For new moms or parents who haven't shopped a consignment sale before, here are a few tips of my own followed by some local news videos explaining the sales and then a list of the upcoming Raleigh, NC-area Fall/Winter sales. 1.) Take a list! Start making a list now of every item you can think of that you need for your child. It can be specific or generic, but just write it down, sort it by category type and even prioritize it by importance. I would never remember everything I want without having it on paper while shopping a sale. Don't think, "Oh that's too specific - I'd never find that at a sale." I've been blown away by very specific items I've found at sales before... such as One Step Ahead's " Walking Wings " (normally $24.95, but I found them practically new for $10). Last year I bought an $85 Kozy Carrier for only $20! The amount of new-with-tag clothing items for sale is often quite surprising too. 2.) Since the sales don't provide shopping carts, take something to carry your items in; I recommend a device with wheels! I use our SnugGlider stroller frame (without the infant car seat) and attach a rectangular laundry basket with a bungee cord. It works fabulously! I also have seen shoppers using carts such as this one , but I've never made the investment to get one of those. A wagon or an empty stroller could work well too. 3.) If possible, sign up for a time slot to work a few volunteer hours so that you can shop early. The best items always go first and once you shop a sale early, you'll realize this. Consignors (people who sell their items) also usually get to shop earlier than the public as well. The only thing to remember about consigning is that there is usually a consignors fee ($5-15) which you pay whether or not any of your items sell. If you do sell your items, depending on the sale you'll typically get about 2/3 of your selling price and the sale owners keep the other 1/3. The Raleigh area is very fortunate to have quite a few consignment sales nearby and those numbers seem to be growing! I've compiled a list of 10 upcoming Fall/Winter sales with their dates and locations below. There are 4 more area sales that I'm aware of, but have not yet confirmed their upcoming dates/location. First though, here is some local news coverage from two of the area's largest sales, KidsExchange and Kids Everywear. Note that these videos are from last winter's "Spring/Summer" sales and are not specifically referring to the upcoming sales. ..... ..... ..... ...... If the crowds in those videos overwhelm you, take heart... all sales aren't as chaotic as those two! In fact, many of the smaller sales are great because since they aren't as crowded, you can find better bargains! The Emanuel Lutheran Youth (ELY) group of Skandia, Michigan spent hundreds of hours collecting bottles and cans and recently donated that money to Upper Peninsula environmental causes undertaken by Northern Michigan University EarthKeeper (NMU EK) students. Christensen said. The youth group has learned how “in our day-to-day lives, we can best care for the Earth and our surroundings,” Christensen said. Formed in 2002, the ELY is comprised of youth ranging in age from 11 to 18. The ELY learned this summer what they can do at home like creating a compost pile and the best use of household hazardous waste - everyday items that can have a negative effect on the environment if not properly handled, disposed or recycled. “They learned about reading labels on cleaning agents and herbicides used for gardening,” Christensen said. “Why we should not flush pharmaceuticals so they don’t get in groundwater.” The ELY presented a check to the NMU Lutheran Campus Ministry (LCM) during an October 2007 benefit concert for its environmental wing, the NMU EK Student Team in Marquette. The student EarthKeepers, who are attempting to start student chapters at three other universities, are part of the overall Michigan Earth Keeper Initiative that was recently declared one of America’s 15 hardest working faith-based non-profits for the second year in a row by a national magazine. Reminiscent of student environmental activism 40 years ago, the youths are being noticed in an area where some adult business leaders are supporting a controversial sulfide mining proposal. Jon Magnuson, director of LCM and the NMU EK Student Team. During the presentation of the check, Magnuson thanked the Skandia youths for raising the money one dime at a time. The ELY group “have the same environmental goals as the Earth Keeper students they are helping,” said Magnuson, who dreamed of creating the interfaith Earth Keepers ten years ago. Hundreds attended the free NMU EK benefit concert featuring the Munising band “Greg LaCombe and Loose Ends.” The Munising band, Greg LaCombe and the Loose Ends, inspired many people to dance at a recent successful free benefit concert in Marquette for Northern Michigan University EarthKeeper (NMU EK) Student Team and NMU Lutheran Campus Ministry (LCM) to support environment related projects in northern Michigan.Donations were given by Emanuel Lutheran Youth group of the Emanuel Lutheran Church of Skandia, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Eden on the Bay Lutheran Church in Munising, the Turtle Island Project and its co-founder/director Rev. Dr. Lynn Hubbard of Munising and the public.Hundreds of Upper Peninsula residents attended ranging in age from 7 to 70. The annual NMU EK benefit concert is sponsored by the non-profit Turtle Island Project, its founder/director Rev. Dr. Lynn Hubbard, and Eden on the Bay Lutheran Church, all of Munising. Other benefit concert sponsors include Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and the public. Jon Magnuson, director of NMU LCM and the NMU EK Student Team.The ELY group pick a different theme each year for their October lock-in retreat and in 2007 it’s learning how to protect the environment and putting those lessons to work. “Prior to concert, we had come from (LCM) Lothlorien house and the NMU students talked to us about climate control and pollution,” Christensen said “We also toured the Marquette Food Co-op.” The university students and the Skandia area youths both participated in the 2006 and 2007 Earth Keeper Clean Sweep that collected old/unwanted drugs and old/broken electronics like computers and cells phones. All items in the Earth Day collections were either recycled or properly disposed Pastor Christensen said the ELY “wanted to give the donation to Lutheran Campus Ministry for their work in environmental care.” “We are learning in confirmation classes about the environment in the scriptures,” Christensen said. “In Genesis the Bible explains God’s creative hand is forming the world.” “We learned from the NMU students that it does make a difference on how we dispose of oil, and where our trash may end up if we are littering,” Christensen said. During October’s “lock-in” the ELY group “played games and trivia on bible and environment issues and held Saturday morning worship,” Rev. Christensen said. The “lock-in” part is spending a night at their church, but the youth are very active for several weeks surrounding the event including collecting bottles and cans to raise money - one dime at a time - for organizations that help the community. The ELY have raised money for the Nifty Thrifty Food Pantry, Inc. in Eben Junction and collected canned food from the Emanuel Lutheran Church congregation. “Last year the youth had a fasting retreat so we learned about world hunger themes,” said Rev. Christensen. The numerous ELY service projects include cleaning road ditches and caroling at Christmas time for people who are shut in for most of the winter. Christian education is a big part of the ELY program including a retreat at the Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp in Crystal Falls, MI that examined “participation in church life and what that will mean when they get older,” Christensen said.
