went outside and a squirrel was running and froze in its tracks so I wouldn't see it as I walked toward it. recognizing the misapplication of Jurassic Park rules, I said out loud "i'm not a T-rex, stupid"... a neighbor was outside and witnessed the whole thing :/... #OccupyLA: Photographer Beaten by LAPD during Raid
[LESS INFO] 5 VIEWS | ADDED 21:00:38 12/01/11
A photographer on the scene of Occupy LA during the LAPD raid on the encampment, identified by L.A. Now as Tyson Heder, 35, was taking pictures of the eviction, when a police officer shoved him away. The video shows Heder then standing up, yelling at the officer, and then being forced to the ground by several policemen.
Via : >
His sister, Christy Collins, said Heder was in custody Wednesday morning.
Collins, who lives in Albany, N.Y., said she got an emotional phone message from him some time after his arrest. He posted on Facebook, “They beat me and stole my camera.” Collin said her brother had not been an Occupy participant previously and apparently went to the encampment Tuesday night just to take pictures.
“I do think it was horrible and excessive,” Collins said after watching a video of the encounter. “But I have to say, I was relieved it wasn’t worse once I saw it.”
A blogger who is a member of Occupy LA writes of other police violence during the eviction: >
"Approximately 300 of us walked down 1st towards Los Angeles, leaving 300 left standing by the cops. The police moved in after us, and kettled the 300 left behind. Seeing this, we ran, as a group, a couple of blocks to get away from them, losing people all along the way. Then suddenly a group of police emerged. We were blocked (kettled) in on Alameda between second and first. The police started running towards us - the group was now about 100 people by this point - and everyone ran into a parking lot to escape. The police ran after them and started beating protestors with batons repeatedly as they were running away trying to escape. I saw about ten police hit protestors. I did not get video footage nor photographs as I was running."
While most can agree that the police violence in LA wasn't nearly as bad as Occupy Oakland, or Occupy Wall Street, it hardly seems cause for the high praise given the LAPD in the mainstream media. They successfully shut down a peaceful group exercising their First Amendment rights without beating them up "too badly." Woo-hoo?

Updated: The Shocking Truth About Naomi Wolf's Factless Assertions
[LESS INFO] 5 VIEWS | ADDED 17:30:07 11/26/11
In an article for The Guardian , Naomi Wolf wrote this: >
In other words, for the DHS to be on a call with mayors , the logic of its chain of command and accountability implies that congressional overseers, with the blessing of the White House, told the DHS to authorise mayors to order their police forces – pumped up with millions of dollars of hardware and training from the DHS – to make war on peaceful citizens.
This follows the ongoing meme that DHS has coordinated the Occupy crackdowns on a national level; that they are orchestrating the violence behind the clearing of Zuccotti Park and others. Wolf carries this to her conclusion: >
So, when you connect the dots, properly understood, what happened this week is the first battle in a civil war; a civil war in which, for now, only one side is choosing violence. It is a battle in which members of Congress, with the collusion of the American president, sent violent, organised suppression against the people they are supposed to represent. Occupy has touched the third rail: personal congressional profits streams. Even though they are, as yet, unaware of what the implications of their movement are, those threatened by the stirrings of their dreams of reform are not.
It's a factless, incendiary assertion dripping in hyperbole, grounded in speculation that's been going on for a couple of weeks now. It began with a tweet. A tweet from Michael Moore speculating that the coordination seemed like something being coordinated by DHS and sanctioned, nay, possibly even requested, by the Obama administration.
Here are the two links Wolf provides as evidence: One to Wonkette ; the other to Washingtonsblog.com . Both articles point back to this absurd article on the Examiner.com site (a very, very right-wing Phil Anschutz, write-out-of-your-butt-with-no-evidence kind of site). Washingtons Blog goes one step further, updating with this: >
(And for those who are understandably doubtful about Examiner.com as a news source, here’s an AP story from a couple hours ago that verifies everything except the specific mention of DHS coordination. )
Got that? The headlines on both of these stories (Wonkette and Washingtons Blog) were splayed across the sites in very large heading fonts: “Homeland Security Coordinated….” and yet the AP confirms everything BUT DHS coordination. Still, that didn’t stop Wolf from ignoring the AP story entirely and writing a piece for the Guardian that included links to bolster her argument that are as factless as her hyperbole, and stem from right-wing sites with anonymous sources.
No one has a source, no one has any evidence, and the originating story which Michael Moore and now Naomi Wolf breathlessly spread quotes an anonymous source with the promise of still more to come in the future, from a "reporter" for Examiner.com who no one seems to know . Miraculously, this "reporter" got a tip from DHS that no national reporter received, and even though Mr. Ellis walks back his original accusation, he promises updates in the future. Well, it’s the future. It’s two weeks later and crickets from Mr. Ellis. Mission accomplished, though. Ask people who are paying attention to the OWS movement and they’ll swear up and down that yes, it was coordinated by DHS because MICHAEL MOORE and now NAOMI WOLF say so.
Truth: We don’t know. It isn’t completely out of the realm of possibility for mayors to consult with DHS. After all, that’s what they’re there for. To help local and state governments deal with threats, real, rumored or perceived. At best, one can conclude that maybe they did, and maybe they didn’t coordinate, and if they did coordinate, no one knows to what extent they did or whether there was any sort of "blessing" and/or mandate from DHS to what they ultimately chose to do.
The best anyone can say is "maybe". But if Wolf were not trying to stoke an international narrative she has chosen, she would have had a look at Portland, where there is some evidence that DHS was consulted because the occupiers were adjacent to federal land. >
There is another line of thinking out there that runs directly counter to the federal-coordination theory: Ruiz wouldn’t comment on this, but one well-placed city source said, in fact, that the feds were mostly inclined to leave Schrunk Plaza open. It was city officials who cajoled them into getting on board—lest they watch most of Occupy’s camp merely move several hundred feet south onto federal land. Which would have been awkward for the city. But also interesting.
Should you accept as fact the idea that the feds were reluctant and the city pushed them along? NO. Why? Because it’s attributed to an anonymous source with nothing to back it up, which makes this theory as worthy as the DHS coordination theory, or just speculation with no facts behind it.
Josh Holland at AlterNet also notes: >
Ironically, the occupation that arguably maintains the best relationship with local officials is Occupy DC, and the Washington, DC government is directly overseen by Congress.
Look, if DHS somehow instructed these cities to dress up their cops in riot gear, pepper spray kneeling protesters, use billy clubs to keep them from crossing imaginary borders, and ultimately throw the lot of them out, then yes, by all means shake your fist. But it's irresponsible for Wolf to publish such incendiary accusations -- accusations of real, physical civil war -- in an international publication, to cite magical articles with unsourced accusations and call it fact. Some might actually call it a lie.
Wolf's hyperbole does harm to the OWS movement and those honest people out there conducting themselves peacefully and with clear intent, because she intentionally tried to stir the fires of anger and discontent and anti-government sentiment on an international level. She should have to either retract or clarify her accusations.
Update Joshua Holland has written his own excellent response to Wolf's specific accusations. >
When you don’t “connect” wholly disparate “dots,” what you get is far less dramatic. Mayors in a handful of cities, responding to local political pressures, decided to break up their local occupations — decisions that were announced to the press well in advance — and were advised as to how best to do so.
One doesn’t have to like that fact to recognize that it’s hardly shocking, and anything but a sinister assault on local communities’ autonomy.
Also, regarding PERF's* involvement, an interview with the director in The Boston Phoenix : >
But what is PERF? And what role, if any, did it play in the police actions? According to PERF Executive Director Chuck Wexler, not the one he had hoped.
His organization is more concerned with improving police practices and policies, he said. He cited a report PERF published in June, which gives advice that runs exactly counter to how Occupy has been handled in most cities — emphasizing communication, respect for the First Amendment, and avoidance of violent methods at nearly all cost.
"Over the years, we've taken on racially biased policing, violent crime, the Gates-Crowley thing in Cambridge," he said. "It's not always pretty, and it's not easy, but I think we owe it to the public to identify best practices."
* PERF is the Police Executives' Research Forum, a group who views themselves as a progressive organization dedicated to reducing police brutality and establishing best practices for police officers in various situations. Until recently, they've been a big target of the right wing for their support of gun control laws.

Occupy Portland Break Away Protest March. Day 4.

Occupy Portland Break Away Protest March. Day 4. On Day 4 a group of 200 + leave the temporary camp in PSU park blocks to meet up with another group of Occupy Portland marchers who are leaving from the Rose Garden. About half way along the route to meet a break-away group of 50 protesters decide to go up Broadway street and not walk in Solidarity with the group who is coming from the Rose Garden. The reason for not wanting to march with the other group, was to make a clear statement that this smaller group did not want to walk with the mayor and police who were with the other march (which was actually marching/following the runners of the Portland Marathon) I understood that the break-away protest march, did not feel comfortable to be marching with the police or with the sanction of police approval. FMK: Living Without a Motor Vehicle Part 3 of 3 (Bicycle Lifestyle)
[LESS INFO] 6 VIEWS | ADDED 08:37:54 08/04/11
"I have been living without owing a motor vehicle as a primary means of transportation since the year of 2000. Since meeting Jenny in 2003 I had introduced her to this lifestyle. Gradually she had begun to appreciate this bicycle lifestyle, now she has been living it for over 2 years. Everywhere we go, we bike. We bike our children in bike trailers everywhere we go. I use the bike trailer to grocery shop. We bike anywhere up to 50 miles a day with the children in the trailer. We bike several times throughout the week for pleasure. It is one of the best things you can do to take a big step towards freeing yourself from the control of the system. Now there are no car bills, no maintanence fees, no mechanical problems, no parking tickets, no moving traffic tickets, no gas fees, no insurance fees, no false identity associated with the motor vehicle, no worry about vandalism, no more pollution to the environment, no more waiting in traffic. We are closer to nature and it forces us to move our bodies, to exercise everytime we wish to leave the home. I ride during the rain and snow. I ride year round. I only take jobs that are within riding distance from my home. The bike requires very little maintenance. When I need to transport many items I use a bike trailer that is capable of holding up to 100 lbs of weight. If I absolutely need to use a vehicle, I will consider public transportation such as the train, and if worse comes to worse I borrow a vehicle from my parents, but this is a very rare instance, as anytime we need to purchase extremely large items we usually have it delivered to our home. There are several bike routes near our home and we live very close to the train station. There really is no need for a motor vehicle at all. I honestly will say that even if I was financially rich, I still would choose not to own a motor vehicle. It is a poor investment and I have no interest in owning one. I have grown to love the bicycle lifestyle, there is no turning back for me. The longest bike ride that we have had is 5 hours for 50 miles while trailing 2 kids each. We hope at one point in our lives when the kids are big to be able to bike across the nation. I wish to start off biking for all day for 8 hours at some point. Video: Forest patrols crack down on illegal burning
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 04:03:29 05/26/11
we found out today while working on a story about extra fire patrols in the sandia mountains. patrols will be out in force for the busy memorial day weekend. joe vigil is live in sandia park with what those patrols have uncovered so far. the sandias are under stage two fire restrictions which means no open burning---something patrols have seen plenty of lately. some people who live in the east mountains get a little tense minute thumbnail 10:04 pm around memorial day weekend with more people out to potentially spark a fire. "well i worry. we have a lot of animals, horses, dogs and stuff so we worry about being gone and not having anyone to get the animals out." the forest service has taped off grills at picnic areas because open fires are not allowed. but that hasn't stopped people from burning elsewhere. listen to what's happened since fire restrictions went into place may 9th. "we've had ten abandoned campfires. that we have found and not cited anybody for. 10? 10." some mountain residents weren't happy to hear that. "i think that if somebody came outside and saw how really dry it was out here and walked around in the forest they probably wouldn't do that. it's extremely extremely dry." and all of those abandoned campfires were smoldering at the time patrols found them. "we would call everyone of those a good catch that potentially saved the forest from a large wildfire." minute thumbnail 10:05 pm patrols caught 3 people who built campfires...and cited them. "fine for that is 125 dollars plus a filing fee." over memorial day weekend the district will have 9 of its own people out patrolling...alon g with two extra crews. including this one from the angeles national forest in california and another crew from idaho. the district requested the crews as part of severity funding because of dry conditions. if someone builds a campfire and it flares out of control they would have to pay for anything that burns---including houses.

Disneyland at Dawn: Mickey's Toontown
The inspiration for this series came from walking through Mickey's Toontown early one morning. It was fascinating for me to hear all of the sounds and take in the sights. There were so many details I had missed when I was there during the daytime. When I went back with the film crew, I was not disappointed. Gloria James SLAP FOOTAGE - Lebron's Mom Fight Caught on Tape!
TMZ has obtained security footage showing LeBron James' mother slapping a parking valet at a hotel in Miami Beach last week ... but the video shows Gloria James may NOT have made the first move. During the encounter ... Gloria walks up to the valet, Rockfeller Sorel, and gets in his face over the parking situation. As Gloria verbally unloads, Rockfeller takes an advancing step towards Gloria and bumps her. Gloria quickly recovers and unleashes the slap heard 'round the world with her left hand -- and then swings her purse at the guy's head with her right hand. Sorel, clearly upset, takes several aggressive steps towards Gloria ... who then slips and falls while retreating. Gloria gets off the ground and tries to go after the valet -- but several bystanders get in between the two and break it up. Gloria was eventually arrested for battery and public intoxication -- and then, according to police, she started talking trash to one of the officers. We called Gloria's attorney for comment -- who tells us he's unable to release a statement until he views the footage for himself. Meanwhile, the valet has made it very clear he intends to go after Gloria in court. From: TMZ Views: 83287 21 ratings Time: 01:02 More in Entertainment
