Games prepare to hit the museum and Katy Perry, Game Maker? SHOW NOTES: Story 1: There has been a big fight over the last few years over whether games can be considered art. In my opinion, that fight has now been rendered mooooooot! The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. is hosting an exhibit called The Art of Video Games: From Pac-Man to Mass Effect we are bound to see a lot of classic and unique video-game artists. The exhibit will launch on March 16th, this exhibit will be three days of panel discussions with game industry veterans such as founder Nolan Bushnell of Atari. The exhibit is featuring retrospectives and movie showings such as Tron, and The King of Kong. In the announcement, guest curator Chris Melissinos stated that “Video games are increasingly expressive and a prevalent medium within modern society...In the 40 years since the introduction of the first home video game, the field has attracted exceptional artistic talent.” I’m curious to know who the critics are claiming this not to be art? Picasso and Mattisse snobs with their noses in the air. Come and face reality suckers! (arrow to the knee meme?) Talented singer? Interesting videos? Russell Brand? How about video game maker? No?...yeah me either. Well it looks like Ms. Perry is getting into the game business with a recent report that she has entered into a partnership with Electronic Arts to create multiple games in the company’s popular Sims franchise. The first collaboration will be a collector’s edition of the upcoming Sims 3 expansion called Showtime, which will include many Katy Perry themed items for your Sim, including clothing, hair, a guitar, and stage props. Katy will also star in new advertising for the series, and is pretty psyched to be involved with the game. She said “I always like to think of myself as a cartoon, and now I'm a Sim!" You know, I am actually at a loss for words. EA rakes in BIG bucks on online content and some Mass Effect PC news. SHOW NOTES: Story 1: Many game companies are seeing a lot of success offering their content digitally, and Electronic Arts is no exception. The company has invested heavily in the digital space and it looks like that investment has payed off. EA announced recently that for the 2011 calendar year, their digital businesses brought in a grand total of $1 Billion in revenue. One main reason for this is the company’s big push into the casual and social space, which includes the purchases of social developers Playfish, Chillingo, and PopCap. It also comes from their online digital distribution portal Origin. In a post on Bioware’s forum, Community Coordinator Chris Priestly said that the game will not be available on Steam because of what he said were “restrictive terms of service.” In order to purchase a copy of the game digitally, gamers will need to purchase the game from EA’s own Origin service. And speaking of Origin, Priestly said that in order to activate the game, gamers will also need to have Origin installed. This is regardless of whether the copy is store bought, or digital. This nation, we often forget when it comes to people of color, is a nation of immigrants. None of us is native to this land – except Native Americans (from whom all the land was stolen or cheated away). It remains symptomatic of our obsession with skin color and cultural “otherhood” that we forget that our parents or grandparents or great-grandparents arrived here after uprooting themselves from places where they were either not welcome or no longer viable citizens – because of their religion, their crimes, their finances, their lack of opportunity, their victimhood – seeking a new start, some way to survive, feed their families, recreate community. Too often, the second- or third- or fourth-generation immigrant starts identifying as the owner of his her place and not the occupant of space that once belonged to someone else. They begin to see “the other” – either those brought here against their will or appearing voluntarily to start anew and do the work we once did and no longer will do – the dirty work. That’s the work that creates millionaires of others of us, and just a few of us at that. Do we ask why, then, the government we elect and pay for treats our immigrant brothers and sisters like criminals? Why are the very people who pick our produce, who roof our houses, who serve our domestic and commercial needs and wants harassed and discriminated against – and shoved out of the United States, despite our unwillingness to perform such tasks ourselves anymore? We have laws on the books that creates citizens of anyone born in the USA, as the children of so many immigrants are. And, yet again, we are prepared to send these children back home with their deported parents? This is a nation of laws, yet also a nation of laws that make no sense and enforcement mechanisms that ignore justice and stretch the rules to de-nude our commercial and industrial entities of their capacity to continue operating. There’s a serious duplicity operating here – hypocrisy of policy and politics so clearly based in our obsession with color and culture that it defeats its own purpose for being because our longstanding racism and white supremacy. Like the INS before it, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency often operates on a plane above the law or as a government unto itself. In whose best interests are the raids and jailings and deportations carried out by the federal government? What are we doing to the families of undocumented worker who keep this country’s economy afloat with their hard work and subpar wages? What about their children? What about their education? Their health care? What about the taxes they pay, the mortgages they’ve been allowed to take out on modest living quarters? And yet, we’re told that Minnesota does one of the better jobs of working together to solve many of these problems, and it shows in the stories coming out of towns and cities where factories and farms have created whole new communities of new residents – some undocumented, some not, but living and working together to keep those communities thriving. Worthington is one. Madelia’s another. But Uncle Sam’s vigilant guard is ever on the prowl. All questions needing answers. A few of them will come this week as TruthToTell’s ANDY DRISCOLL and MICHELLE ALIMORADI query two of the state’s most active advocates in this field. Here in a nutshell is the state of play in the 2012 Republican presidential sweepstakes: alleged serial sexual harasser Herman Cain is being surpassed by confirmed serial adulterer Newt Gingrich . By Monday, new surveys from CNN and PPP showed Newt vaulting past the fading pizza maker. As his public statements and personal life show, the thrice-married Gingrich is hardly a champion for American women. That starts with Newt Gingrich's belief that marriage is an institution between one man and three women in rapid succession. In 1980, Newt was separated from his first wife and former high school geometry teacher , Jackie Battley. As she lay incoherent in her hospital bed following surgery for a reoccurrence of uterine cancer, Gingrich paid her a visit to announce he wanted a divorce. As Lee Howell , a Gingrich friend and associate at whose wedding Newt was best man, described it: > "Newt came up there with his yellow legal pad, and he had a list of things on how the divorce was going to be handled. He wanted her to sign it. She was still recovering from surgery, still sort of out of it, and he comes in with a yellow sheet of paper, handwritten, and wants her to sign it. > Newt can handle political problems, but when it comes to personal problems, he's a disaster. He handled the divorce like he did any other political decision: You've got to be tough in this business, you've got to be hard. Once you make the decision you've got to act on it. Cut your losses and move on." He moved on to wife number two, Marianne Ginther . But Marianne fared little better, getting dumped for Congressional staffer Callista Bisek after a six year affair even as Newt was leading the inquisition of Bill Clinton. As Vanity Fair summed it up last year: > According to Salon, Gingrich and the former Hill staffer (23 years his junior, mind you) would frequently dine in the Supreme Court cafeteria--an unsuspectingly sordid detail. (In 1995, Vanity Fair referred to Bisek as Gingrich's "frequent breakfast companion.") Gingrich stepped down from Congress in 1998 following an ethics scandal, among other things. The two were married two years later. Gingrich, who swapped his Baptist faith for Catholicism just in time to attack President Obama's 2009 address at Notre Dame University, later explained that his rapid fire infidelities were the actually product of his own patriotism: > "There's no question at times of my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate. And what I can tell you is that when I did things that were wrong, I wasn't trapped in situation ethics, I was doing things that were wrong, and yet, I was doing them." I mean, some do, but they're relatively rare. On the other hand, men are basically little piglets -- you drop them in the ditch, they roll around in it, doesn't matter, you know." And for Gingrich, the biggest "infection" of them all - liberalism - caused a young mother to murder her children. Back in 1994, after dumping his cancer-stricken first wife but before marrying his mistress following the adulterous affair that ended his second marriage, Newt pointed the finger at Democrats for the Susan Smith affair. It was Smith who drew Americans' initial sympathy - and subsequent scorn - for her invention of a black bogeyman to conceal her heinous crime. On October 24th, 1994, as the New York Times recalled, Smith killed her young sons, killings for which she was eventually sentenced to life in prison: > That night, investigators say, Mrs. Smith pulled her car to the edge of a deep lake, stepped out, put the gearshift in drive and let it roll down the boat ramp into the black water. Her two little boys, buckled snugly in their safety seats, died under the lake... > ..."I believed her, right up to the end," said Juliaette Kerhulas, of Mrs. Smith's story that a young black man had ordered her out of her burgundy 1990 Mazda on the night of Oct. 25, then driven away with 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander in the back seat. Ms. Kerhulas wasn't the only one who believed in her. None other than future House Speaker Newt Gingrich rushed to the defense of Smith, whose step-father ironically happened to be a prominent Republican fundraiser and member of the Christian Coalition. He said the double murder "vividly reminds every American how sick the society is getting and how much we need to change things," expediently adding that "the only way you get change is to vote Republican." As Frank Rich recounted in August 1995: > Asked later by Tom Brokaw to elaborate, the Speaker-to-be cited "a direct nexus between the general acceptance of violence" and "the pattern that the counterculture and Lyndon Johnson's Great Society began in the late 60's." Of course, the 1960's also happened to be the time when the women's movement rose to prominence. The victories it achieved for women's political equality, economic independence and reproductive rights transformed American society and helped move the nation closer to a "more perfect union." Apparently, those epochal changes escaped Herman Cain's notice. And while Cain's is being punished in the polls for it, he is being replaced atop the GOP field by Newt Gingrich . While that may be a good thing for Tiffany's bottom line , it's a sad development for American women.
