Looking at the BlackBerry Bold 9900
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 18:18:07 06/11/11
[ VIDEO ] Already it's time to start thinking new phone. My BlackBerry is a good device, however, there are some limitations. Especially as far as what I currently use it for which is to surf the web and check e-mail. So it's time to find a new device more to my liking.
I've even considerd an *gulp* iPhone. I hear the iPhone is a better device to surf the web, but I don't want to fall into that iPhone craze. Who knows by the time the next version is available for consumption the iPhone 4 would be a much cheaper option than the "iPhone 5". :P
So this upcoming BlackBerry Bold 9900 has just kept BlackBerry in the game right now. A touch screen and much thinner this phone appeals not only to my own technical aspects but for style. I just as easily like a phone for what I want it for, just as much as how it looks.
The video above takes a look at the 9900 and compares it to a phone similar to mine the Bold 9780. It's a little wider and yet much thinner than the 9780. Hopefully this phone will get a trial in my hands at an AT%T store near me!
Well thankfully that decision won't be made for another year at least. That gives me time to evaluate not only the type of phone that I'd like, but also to determine the right price for the device.

A Look Back at My Predictions for 2010
[LESS INFO] 1595 VIEWS | ADDED 00:13:59 12/30/10
I'm Walt Mossberg; shut up.
A year ago, I laid out my predictions for 2010, and said that one year later, I'd review them. Well, today is one year later, and I'm about ready for a nice, goopy mouthful of some claim chowder. Ready?
1. The iPad will change the face of computing.
I said the iPad would change the face of computing, and jeezum crap, it did! Millions have purchased the iPad, and then thrown out their old, useless computers in the face of such staggering innovation.
I said the sales of the iPad would be just under 7 billion. I'm going to say that 8 million is, in fact, just under 7 billion. ;
2. No one will care about the Nexus One.
Another win for me: while the Nexus One was a well-reviewed phone, it sold like crap cakes, and now it's dead. Google's since learned that they're good at search and OS building, but goddamn terrible at selling phones directly to customers.
3. Paul Thurrott will get a job at MacLife magazine.
While notorious Windows-bigot Paul Thurrott didn't end up on the payroll of MacLife, I'm going to call this prediction a hit based on a recent column where Thurrott admitted that Apple is the biggest and most important tech company in the world; if that's not an application to work for a Mac magazine, I don't know what is!
4. Steve Ballmer will somehow get even more bald.
This one doesn't even require more explanation. He's so bald!
5. Microsoft will announce a subscription OS, but no one will care.
I said that Microsoft would announce a subscription-only OS, but that no one other than journalists would use it. I'd like to introduce you to a little device called the Microsoft Kin; absolutely nobody cared about this lump of junk!
6. Chrome OS will be a failure.
Last year I said that Chrome OS will be a failure. It's so much of a failure that it hasn't even been released yet! Case closed.
7. Techcrunch will get bought by AOL.
I think I was the only pundit on the planet who called this one, but I did, right down the smallest detail. Look it up, unbelievers!
8. Leo Laporte will Kill Robert Scoble.
This is my only miss of the year; I said that king of the internet Leo Laporte would kill Robert Scoble with his bare hands. What the hell happened, Leo? Do you have any idea how much money I'd laid down on this one? You told me it was a sure thing. Make it happen, you loveable bastard! Kill Scoble dead!
--
As you can see, I got a staggering 90% of my predictions right. Truly I am the only technology journalist in the world.
Come back next week for my predictions for the year ahead; they're sure to be perfectly accurate.
This has been Walt Mossberg; shut up.

Google TV vs Apple TV

Google TV vs Apple TV is a post from Chris Pirillo
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
This is Google TV . I am more than grateful to the team at Google for sending this unit to me, and for showing me how I can help all of YOU win one for yourself. I have to tell you – this piece of hardware is simply stunning. The quality is far beyond what I had expected. Besides, what could be cooler than watching YouTube videos on a big screen television?
Google TV is a new platform for television that combines your normal TV programming with a full web browser, Android apps and a simple way to search through all of it. It’s even easy to switch between TV and the web without having to change inputs on your television set. >
With Google Chrome and Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Google TV lets you access everything on the web. Watch your favorite web videos, view photos, play games, check fantasy scores, chat with friends, and do everything else you’re accustomed to doing online.
If you’re a video producer like I am, you’re going to love this. Google TV gives web video stars the change to be a TV star. Google TV users can even bookmark your YouTube channel onto their TV home screen. This makes your content appear one click away from whatever they are already watching.
Google TV will come pre-loaded with apps like Netflix, Twitter, CNBC, Pandora, Napster, NBA Game Time, Amazon Video On Demand and Gallery. Starting early next year, apps from Android Market will work on Google TV as well. As I already said in the video above, the quality and clarity of this Sony television is just – fantastic. I cannot imagine anything better to surf the web with, including my beloved Mac Pro and dual 30″ monitors. This TV set puts those to shame. Seriously.
I’m sure you are ready to know how you can win one of these for yourself, aren’t you? Google is graciously giving YOU the chance to win . The contest ends on December 22nd, so you’ll have to hurry. 100 people will win a 46″ Sony Google Internet TV on January 20th.
To enter, simply create a video describing why you’re excited about watching the Internet on TV. You can upload your entry as soon as you’re ready – and please make sure you’ve read the official contest rules . Your video cannot be longer than one minute, so be creative with your time – and good luck to everyone!
Thanks again to Google. This Sony in my office is now my new best friend. Why are YOU excited about Google TV?

Do You Rely on Your Phone? is a post from Chris Pirillo

Someone asked recently if I could live without my cell phone. Ten years ago, I could have. Back then, my phone wasn’t smart at all. It was big. It had a lot of buttons on it. But it didn’t really DO much.
These days, my smartphone has turned into the best computer I’ve ever had. It’s with me anytime I leave the room, let alone the house. I don’t (and can’t) always carry my iPad or laptop with me. I certainly don’t haul my desktop around. My phone is always in my pocket and I can use it to do nearly anything I can do with the other devices.
My phone allows me to stay better connected with the world around me. I’m able to do most of what I need to do from wherever I am – I’m even always online. This is a more powerful computer than what I had back in high school. I don’t need a physical keyboard or mouse for a device to be a computer. It’s a basic input/output device. That’s all I need.
I don’t know if – today – I could live without my phone. I truly don’t think I could. How about you? Could you live without your phone?

How to Buy a Netbook is a post from Chris Pirillo
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
While using the I Am T-Pain Auto-Tune app the other night, someone in chat asked if I would buy a netbook through Sprint or just purchase one outright from a regular store. You know me – I had to keep singing along through the app as I gave my answer.
I would definitely buy the device outright and not through Sprint. Think about it this way: Sprint could be dead in the water in a couple of years. Yes, they have a large network. Many other companies have had large networks only to die out for no apparent reason. With the economy the way it is, you just never know what’s going to happen. Where will you be with your Sprint netbook then, my friend?
Buying a device outright whenever possible is just smart, in my opinion. You aren’t tethered to any specific network or service. You’re free to choose what you do with that device, and how (and where!) you do it. There’s no contracts to worry about and no being tied down to limitations of a company – such as Sprint.
Would YOU buy through Sprint or any other company, or would you just head to your local gadget store and pick one up there?

Windows Phone 7
[LESS INFO] 10 VIEWS | ADDED 23:15:00 11/23/10
The Windows Phone 7 (WP7) devices are out, and recently at conferences all around there were a number of people sporting the new devices and blogging , tweeting , and more about their new toys. Since I tend to know many people that work in the Microsoft world, there was a lot more buzz about the phone at recent events than I've seen elsewhere. Finally it seems the Windows phones are a worthy competitor to the Android and iPhone devices.
A good friend of mine, a Windows infrastructure guru, sent me this early review of WP7 , with the idea that it might convince me to switch from my iPhone and give it a try. That's not likely to happen anytime soon as I like my iPhone and don't really see a compelling reason to change. To me the important thing is the platform and the coverage. While I get decent, not great, coverage from T-Mobile, I am tempted to switch to Sprint or Verizon as they seem to do a much better job. If they had an iPhone, I'd move tomorrow.

Should the iPhone Have a Physical Keyboard?

Should the iPhone Have a Physical Keyboard? is a post from Chris Pirillo
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
Recently, someone asked me on Facebook if I felt the iPhone should have a physical keyboard. My answer, in short, is a resounding NO.
I am very grateful that my iPhone does not have a physical keyboard. You might remember that the first video I ever recorded about the iPhone was one stating my reasons for not wanting one. One of the biggest reasons was that it didn’t have a physical keyboard. However, I’ve never been able to type faster on a mobile device of any kind than what I do on my iPhone.
I don’t think the iPhone would be served well at all by having a physical keyboard attached to it. If you want to attach one yourself, go right ahead. I think that the trend is going to continue to remove these from as many smartphones as possible.
Don’t judge until you’ve had the chance to really use a virtual keyboard. I love that it corrects my text when I am typing. Can you see that happening with a physical keyboard? About 80% of the time, my phone knows what it is I was trying to type.
What are your thoughts? Do you miss having a physical keyboard if you no longer have one? Do you think more phones should stop including them?

Godfinger iPad Quick Look
[LESS INFO] 7 VIEWS | ADDED 03:22:18 04/22/10
The iPad is still only weeks old and already there are thousands of games available for it. One of the first games released is Godfinger, a cute little sim type game by ngmoco:) The game is following the same type of model as farmville and mafia wars, where you get the game for free and everything is available to you at a slow pace. If you want to move the game along quicker you can purchase in game gold and points. So if you are impatient you can pay to cheat basically. It?s like the game genie back in the day I guess, only you don?t have to blow into it or enter weird codes that can cause all kinds of awesome glitches. I still have no idea how that magical device worked, after this I should head over to Wikipedia and do some serious internet research. Back on track. This is a cute little game by the makers of black and white. The PC game that almost no one played. No one that I know of anyway. Visually the game is pretty amazing and it runs well. I?ve had it crash a few times but nothing totally crazy, and right now every ipad game crashes. The level cap is set at 50 and I don?t know of anyone yet that has hit it. I?ve put in 3 hours and I just hit level 13. 3 hours may not seem like a lot if you put any time into real games, but for these small casual mobile games 3 hours is an eternity. I don?t know what else this game can possibly offer to hold my attention. It feels like I already have most of the buildings, the new ones are just more powerful versions of existing ones, and all they do is generate more gold that I don?t need. Games like this don?t hold my attention long because they don?t have a questing or rewards system. The reward in this game is just always more gold to buy more buildings that generate more gold. There is no story, there is no questing system, no system for fighting or taking things over, I can?t manipulate my friends worlds although I can see them. It?s odd because I have to be online to play, which allows me to see my friends planets, but I can?t do anything except enchant one of their little guys, which will give me a little gold. Which I don?t need. There is no crafting system or loot system or really anything that would get me more involved other than the ability to generate more gold. I guess the new buildings could be viewed as ?loot? but it is very shallow. To be fair the game has only been out a few weeks, and it is free, but it won?t hold my interest very much longer. It will be interesting to see where this game is in a few more months, although by then I will have probably forgotten all about it. On a side note, I do like the Arial Rounded MT font they used for the logo and text that was popular back in 2005.
