euronews musica - Old is new again in Verdi's 'I Masnadieri'
www.euronews.com The glorious San Carlo opera house in Naples is staging Verdi's 'I Masnadieri' (The Bandits), a story about tragic love, feuding brothers, and a gang of young rebels indulging in the most horrible crimes. "I Masnadieri are outlaws, that is to say criminals living outside the law. These are also young people who do not see any future for themselves," explained director Gabriele Lavia. This opera, which the Neapolitan public has not had a chance to see for decades, deals with contemporary issues: young people's rebelliousness, or Man's difficulties in dealing with the vagaries of fate. Musically rich and complex, 'I Masnadieri' has an extraordinary beginning according to conductor Nicola Luisotti. "I find the Prelude and its solo cello extremely interesting," Luisotti told euronews. "The solo instrument indicates that each character in this opera is alone; nobody loves anybody, and everyone hates everyone. The tragedy is caused by a lack of communication - all the music here reflects that solitude." The opera's topicality is also echoed in a famous romanza sung by Carlo, the anti-hero - 'I feel as if I were attached to evil by a chain, I have the impression that the earth, that my own homeland, my whole world is rejecting me, that even God is ignoring me.' "These are words one can read on the graffitied walls of any subway in New York, or Rome, or Naples, where unhappy, angry, young men use walls to express their desire for freedom - freedom which is ... euronews musica - The Silk Road Ensemble, where music links east and west
www.euronews.com Wu Man plays an ancient instrument. She explained: "This is a historic Pipa. It was introduced from Persia and Central Asia, 2000 years ago through the Silk Road trade and this is why it fits very much in the Silk Road Ensemble." Kayhan Kalhor plays the Kamancheh. "My intrument Kamancheh is a bowed instrument," he explained. "The very different thing from other bow instruments is that you bow in one direction but you turn the instrument in order to reach different strings." Wu Man said the method of playing her ancient pipa has been brought up to date. "You use five fingers to play. You use fake fingernails which is a very modern way. This started in the 50s, with four strings and bamboo frets." Wu Man and Kayhan Kalhor are members of the Silk Road Ensemble in which musicians from different cultures come together. The project is named after the famous Silk Road, which allowed different cultures to mingle over 2000 years as it carried trade between Europe, central Asia and the Far East. Kayhan Kalhor spoke a little more about his kamancheh. "The way it looks is probably a little different from western violin but its basically the same concept," he said. "Somewhere along the road in the history this instrument came out of Persia and went eastwards to China and Japan and then westwards to Europe." The variety of instruments makes the ensemble unique. It was founded by the world renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma in 1998. It is all about exchanging ideas. Members of ... From: Euronews Views: 57 1 ratings Time: 04:34 More in Shows

euronews musica - Christophe Rousset: a musical archaeologist
www.euronews.com It is in Saint German des Pr%eacutes, the most Parisian of Paris neighbourhoods, where we meet Christophe Rousset. A renowned French harpsichordist, conductor and expert on the Baroque period, it is fair to say he is somewhat of a 'musical archaeologist'! He talks to euronews about the pleasure he finds in his work: " What I like about my job is to find a repertoire of sounds and elements which are essentially from the seventeenth and eighteenth century. For me there is no greater feeling than to revive works that have never been heard for centuries. Then, through the magic of music, suddenly it's brought back to life by the performers. It's an absolutely amazing feeling and comparable to that of an archaeologist who unearths a Greek vase and finds the answer to a myth." Christophe Rousset recently celebrated the twentieth anniversary of his outstanding period orchestra, Les Talens Lyriques. Their repertoire covers pieces such as Lully's long overlooked lyrical tragedy Bell%eacuterophon, as well as some of Baroque's better known 'hits' like Rameu's lyrical comedy Plat%eacutee. As Christophe Rousset sees it: "The most wonderful thing in the world today is the ability to see the flow of information and beauty. He goes on to point out: Being a musician, being an artist in general, is a way for me to spread beauty, which is important to me. It's through art that we can exalt our human nature and it's this world of Muses, all of them, that makes us different from animals." He ...
