Uneasy axis for Paris and Berlin
www.euronews.com The background to the austerity versus growth meeting between the leaders of the eurozone's two biggest economies - Francois Hollande and Angela Merkel - is a big contrast in their economic fortunes. In Germany both exports and domestic consumption have mostly grown. France is experiencing weak demand at home and slowing exports. The numbers tell the story: In the first three months of this year, French growth evaporated, Germany was the region's strongest performer. Ten percent of French workers are without a job -- in Germany it is 5.6 percent. French debt as a percentage of economic output is much higher. Michael Hewson, a market analyst with CMC Markets, said: "There's a lot of uncertainty with how a new French president would change the political dynamic between Germany and France. I mean, Mr Hollande has already said he wants to renegotiate the fiscal compact, Angela Merkel has implicitly ruled that out. He's also gone on record as saying that he wants to raise the minimum wage and reduce the retirement age, well that's really going to grate with Germany." Merkel and Hollande may have contrasting styles as well as economies but know they have to get on for the greater good and to save the euro. The problem is finding consensus on the right balance between austerity and growth with the nervous financial markets looking on. euronews the network - Will Hollande have the power to change the course of Europe?
www.euronews.com France's presidential run-off was a closely fought race in the end as both candidates made gestures to a far right that came in third in the first round. President Sarkozy made borders, immigration and crime a major issue, while Fran%ccedilois Hollande made it clear the doors are not wide open. They called for more growth related policies to fight an unemployment rate hovering near 10 percent with nearly three million people. Where they diverged was on how Elys%eacutee palace should change France's taxation and spending policies. Sarkozy called for fiscal rigor, while Fran%ccedilois Hollande urged a loosening of the fiscal strings to spur sluggish growth. The battle now turns to the June legislative elections, as the new president's policies can only be successful with a cooperative national assembly. Wired in to this edition of the network are: Corien Wortmann-Kool Dutch MEP and Vice-Chair of the People's Party, in the parliament that includes Mr Sarkozy's UMP; Hannes Swoboda Austrian MEP and Chair of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the parliament which includes Mr Hollande's Socialists; and Sir Graham Watson an MEP from Britain and President of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party. Barroso sees future growth in Greece
www.euronews.com The people of Greece can look forward to economic growth. How much weight do those words carry? Recent figures underlined some of the problems the country is facing. Just over 21 percent are jobless, twice the average number in the eurozone. Yet the President of the European Commission told MEPs in Strasbourg there is a way forward. "The Greek people have been accepting extremely difficult sacrifices and I think now, if there is a real commitment to implement all the programme, these sacrifices will be remunerated, creating conditions for growth and jobs in Greece," said Jos%eacute Manuel Barroso The message was clear. It was now Athens' turn to deliver on the deficit-trimming and economic reforms linked to the financial aid. For that to happen one MEP believes its politicians who must implement financial changes. "The two main political parties in Greece paid themselves 29 million euros of taxpayers' money to start the campaign on May 6. I find it a scandal, and that's my last word Mr President that Greek citizens have to make sacrifices that European partners have to continue to pay while most Greek politicians simply continue their bad practices of the past," opined Guy Verhofstadt MEP, Liberals and Democrats. The Greek election is being held in the first week of May. Faith in the EU is waning. In one poll 30 percent said they would not vote for any politician supporting the EU/IMF rescue package. Kiribati: First Nation to be Swallowed Up by the Sea
[LESS INFO] 3 VIEWS | ADDED 23:30:01 03/10/12
This video was uploaded to YouTube in November 2011, and discusses the climate change reality in Kiribati, and that the inhabitants may soon have to leave their island homes because of the rising sea level. Kiribati is a low-lying island nation located in the South Pacific. There is mention of the possibility of have to relocate "in a few years." It has been about four months, and already the people of Kiribati are preparing to relocate. Their island homes are being swallowed up by the rising sea level.
Via : >
In what could be the world's first climate-induced migration of modern times, Anote Tong, the Kiribati president, said he was in talks with Fiji's military government to buy up to 5,000 acres of freehold land on which his countrymen could be housed.
Some of Kiribati's 32 pancake-flat coral atolls, which straddle the equator over 1,350,000 square miles of ocean, are already disappearing beneath the waves.
Most of its 113,000 people are crammed on to Tarawa, the administrative centre, a chain of islets which curve in a horseshoe shape around a lagoon.
"This is the last resort, there's no way out of this one," Mr Tong said.
"Our people will have to move as the tides have reached our homes and villages."
The Kiribati government has launched an educational program for its people with the goal of giving them skills to find employment in Fiji in order to survive, and also that they might be more appealing as potential migrants.
As they prepare to leave behind their homeland, their culture and lifestyle, Mr. Tong hopes that the international community will make funds available for their urgent need, the land purchase, and setting up homes for over 100,000 people. Then there's still the matter of persuading the government of Fiji to agree to this plan. And all the while the tides flow further inland on Kiribati.

British losses mount in Afghanistan
www.euronews.com Six British soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan when their Warrior armoured vehicle hit a roadside bomb. The attack is the heaviest single British loss in Afghanistan since 2006 and takes the total number of British fatalities to 404. It happened on the road between Gereshk and Lashkar Gah. Responding to the news, British Prime Minister David Cameron said: "This is a desperately sad day for our country and desperately sad of course for the families concerned. It is a reminder of the huge price that we're paying, for the work that we're doing in Afghanistan. The sacrifice that our troops have made and continue to make." Mr Cameron added that he would be discussing Afghanistan with US President Obama during his forthcoming trip to the US to ensure that they were "in lock step" about training the Afghan army and police in the run up to military withdrawal from the country which is expected at the end of 2014. The UK Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said that the attack would not change the British timetable for withdrawal from Afghanistan Five of the soldiers were from the 3rd Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment and one from the Ist Battalion of the Duke of Lancaster's regiment.Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com From: Euronews Views: 122 6 ratings Time: 01:01 More in News & Politics
