Innovations In Liposuction: Results with Less Risk, Little Downtime & Minimal Discomfort
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 00:00:00 02/09/12
The increase in the popularity of liposuction has led to gentle, new techniques that developers say not only improve results and reduce risks, but also drastically speed up recovery time. In today’s segment, we focus on Bodyjet Liposuction, a water-assisted technology approved by the FDA in summer 2008. It’s being hailed as a faster, much gentler way to remove fat, with less risk because it requires only a local anesthesia. Patients are generally able to drive themselves home after the procedure, and to carry on many of their normal activities as soon as the next day. We’ll watch the procedure as it’s performed, and learn all about it from plastic surgeon Dr. Roger Bassin.

Workout - "Bottom Barrel Boys": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
In June 2011, The New Yorker called the band WORKOUT "a hyperactive rock monster" and compared their music to a love child of David Bowie and Roky Erickson. But all name checking and flattery aside, this isn't quite the full picture. This is a Brooklyn band in the grandest tradition of Rock and Roll that wants to be your # 1 Party Band, break some hearts and unleash wild times. Featuring Jack Killen on vocals and piano, Alexander W. Forbes on guitar, Jason Langdon on bass and Tim Traynor on drums, this four-piece fills rooms with their anthemic odes on love, death and fantasy. These are big songs with finger-tapped guitar solos, sing-along choruses, foot-stomping chants and enough wild noise to make any bar break out into a brawl. Their self-titled debut album, featuring "Bottom Barrel Boys", was released on September 24th 2011, twenty years after Nevermind and can be purchased only at your local NYC bodega or on-line at the band's website. With hardly any of the songs being under the 5 minute mark, you can tell these guys really want you to get your money's worth - strap yourself in for the ride and help put the classic back in Rock. NATURE | Raccoon Nation | Living For the City | PBS
The raccoon's intelligence, adaptable nature, and omnivorous diet all help the species thrive in urban landscapes. When the lights go down in cities across North America, another world is revealed, populated by shady little characters that live alongside us, but exist in the margins. These pint-size problem solvers are smart, adaptable and omnivorous, and they love a good challenge. Welcome to the world of urban raccoons. With their busy little hands, they can do what other would-be urban animals can't %mdash open doors, get into attics, and raid secured trash cans. And they are especially fond of big cities, like Chicago, New York, and Toronto %mdash the raccoon capital of the world. In cities everywhere, wherever they've been introduced, they have done very, very well. It seems that the more obstacles you throw in their way, the smarter they get. In an effort to outwit raccoons, we may be pushing their brain development and perhaps even sending them down a new evolutionary path. One biologist who has been studying raccoons for 25 years believes the city life is in fact cultivating "%uumlber-raccoons," ready to take over the world. Only time will tell just how advanced this "nation" of urban raccoons will become. "Raccoon Nation" premieres on PBS Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 8/7c (check local listings) and is part of the 30th season of the Peabody and Emmy award-winning series produced by Thirteen in association with WNET.ORG for PBS. Greenpeace Publishes 2011 Ranking of China's Supermarkets

The global environmental watchdog%mdashGreenpeace%mdashhas released its rankings for China's supermarkets to help consumers avoid stores that sell unsafe food. The best-ranked place to shop is Carrefour, and the worst ranked is Tesco. Amid a series of food safety scandals in China, Greenpeace has released its 2011 ranking of China's supermarkets. The aim is to help consumers avoid supermarkets that continue to sell unsafe food. This comes after a recent Greenpeace survey shows that most local fresh produce at five supermarkets in China contains pesticides. Some are banned or exceed legal limits. Last November, Greenpeace randomly sampled 35 items of fruits and vegetables from five supermarkets in Beijing, Chengdu, and Guangzhou. Thirty samples contain pesticides. Only 14 percent is pesticide-free. Greenpeace food and agriculture campaigner Wang Jing said, "With so many pesticides, it might seem impossible to find safe food." Wang said consumers' choice is the best deterrent: "If we choose not to buy unsafe food, then supermarkets won't sell them." According to Greenpeace, the best place to shop for pesticide-free food is Carrefour%mdashfollowed by Auchan and Shanghai City. The worst places are the Japanese Ito Yokado chain, Chengdu, and the British supermarket Tesco. Walmart is ranked 7th on the list. Five ranking criteria were used, including use of ... Wukan Villagers to Elect Village Chief on March 1st
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me On March 1st Wukan villagers will vote for their village chief. Wukan is the Chinese village that kicked out all Communist Party authorities at the end of last year, as part of a protest against illegal land grabs. And after a two-week stand off with the police, the Chinese regime agreed, in principle, to meet their demands%mdashone of which was for fair local elections. Many suspect the Chinese regime does not want to let the elections get too much media attention. Reporters from Hong Kong's "Apple Daily" recently saw a large billboard detailing election regulations in Wukan, yet the next day the board had been removed. Wukan villagers told NTD on February 1st they had elected a committee to oversee the election process. Forty people ran for eleven positions. At time of report, the results were not out yet. The committee will oversee the election of new leaders to replace those who were dismissed after the protest. [Mr. Cai, Wukan Villager]:(Male, Chinese, First in footage) "There is a ticket office for each village. Only two villages are done, five villages remain. We elected the notary public and next month, on March 1st, we will elect the village committee." The original conflict in Wukan was over officials carrying out illegal land grabs. Villagers are still wary of the regime and question whether it will keep its promises, even after the election in March. [Mr ... From: NTDTV Views: 241 6 ratings Time: 02:40 More in News & Politics

Polluted water contaminates local farmland
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 12:30:54 02/02/12
Contaminated River Threatens Farmers’ Livelihoods The farmers of Karauli district, Rajasthan are distressed. The once clean water of the Bhadravati river which cuts through the district is now foaming with strange and unidentified effluents. The river banks are lined with sewage and chemical flotsam. As the river is the only source of water in the neighboring rural areas the farmers are forced to use it for their fields. The polluted water has made the fields less fertile and has greatly diminished the yields. IndiaUnheard Community Correspondent and Karauli resident Sunita Kasera is concerned: “Karauli is the biggest city in the district. It is growing fast without the neccessary infrastructure to manage the growing need for sanitation and waste disposal. There is no sewage plant in the whole area and the dirt just gets dumped directly into the river water.” The farmer she interviewed while making a video on the polluted river told Sunita that because of the dirty water their land now yields just 1 tonne of crop instead of the usual 4 tonnes. The contaminated water has deteriorated the fertile soil and affected the growth of the plants. The farmers report that the vegetables have become suseptible to disease. If they do not get infected with worms, they ripe too fast and rot away even quicker. The farmers fear for their livelihoods, health and income security. The effects of water pollution on cultivable land and its negative effects especially on local farmers are a known fact in India. All major rivers throughout the country are highly polluted. A majority of the pollution has its source in domestic households. In India, untreated sewage is a prime reason behind major environmental hazards and contagions. If it has to avoid a terrible fate, Karauli city desperately needs a proper sewage plant as soon as possible. Sunita Kasera feels strongly that the government needs to take on this issue fast to avoid any further damage to the rural population and the environment: “Our district has a wondeful rich landscape, which might be gone soon if we to not take measures today. I think, protecting the land and rivers can only be in the interest of all people to keep everyone in good health and protect our argriculture.”

And one rickshaw business gives tourists this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Taking a rickshaw ride through Beijing's old hutong district has continued to be one of the city's most iconic and locally supported tourist activities. Hutongs are narrow streets and alleys that are formed by residential buildings with courtyards. [Song Guangxin, Rickshaw Driver of "Eight Lords of Houhai"]: "The Houhai hutongs of Shichahai stand out from so many others in Beijing because they are the only cluster which is surrounded by water." Houhai, a lake-centered district in Beijing, is home to a handful of the few hutong alleys and siheyuan courtyard residences that remain in the city. The district is Beijing's most suitable place for a rickshaw tour. Rickshaw tours to Houhai began in 1994, when the old-style hutongs were still commonplace across Beijing. The "Eight Lords of Houhai" is Beijing's prominent rickshaw business. It consists of eight driving guides who entertain passengers with various anecdotes and stories on the tour. The five-mile rickshaw tour around Shicha Lake, which is lined with hip clubs, shops and restaurants, usually takes about an hour. The bustling area now hosts millions of visitors every year from around the world. [Liu Chunhong, Rickshaw Driver of "Eight Lords of Houhai ... BRA Boys at Ho’okipa
If you spend any time watching at Ho’okipa it is clear the locals really rule. Levi, Graham, Mark… they know the break and charge it. But after standing on the hill for hours and hours it became clear that the Brazilians really push the locals. Kauli is pretty much a local and kicks arse at any break he sails at from Pozo to Punta Preta. Ricardo is just radical, he can pull the sickest ride without any warning after stuffing the previous few waves. And Marcilio has made Maui his home and is one of the trick masters on the water; he is so confident and consistent it’s insane. When the Brazilians roll into town it really hots things up; not only do they rip but they force everyone else to step up their game. So here is our film showing them playing in someone else’s backyard – Brazilian style!

Freezing Rain Hits Guizhou Province, China
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me The bitter cold has left people high and dry in one village in Guizhou Province. An onslaught of freezing rain has made it so cold that water won't come through the tap... it's a situation that's particularly difficult for the elderly. A continuous round of freezing rain in Xifeng County, Guizhou Province has made life difficult for locals by cutting off water supplies. Gaofeng village is situated at more than 3900 feet above sea level, the highest in Xifeng County's Shitong Township, so freezing temperatures are nothing new here. But for 84-year old villager Zhu Shaohua, all of the water in his two supply buckets has frozen. Water would not flow out from Zhu's tap even after he warmed the pipes with hot water. So he's forced to walk to the local village water station almost a mile away. [Zhu Shaohua, Local]: "It takes me almost an hour to fetch the water, but what I bring back is only enough for one day." In Gaofeng village, heavy snow and freezing rain began last week, destroying crops and covering electric lines with thick ice. The freezing rain usually lasts until mid-February. The Pace Report: "The 2012 NEA Jazz Masters Cememony Highlights"
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 13:32:12 01/21/12
One of the most important jazz events took place at Jazz at Lincoln Center during the week of APAP last week. The 2012 National Endowment for the Arts held their 30th anniversary of the Jazz Masters Ceremony and Concert to a sold-out crowd. The event pays tribute to the architects of jazz music both living and deceased. More importantly, the NEA gives the current inductees as well as music programs and centers all over the country, grants and funding to continue the legacy of providing the community jazz programming and education to keep the music viable to public. Including this year’s inductees, the NEA has celebrated the work and lives of 128 jazz musicians, awarded more than 2,400 jazz grants, and given over $32 million dollars over the last 30 years. A very important feat for the music that very seldom gets the notoriety or praise like other American black music such as hip-hop, soul, and the blues. This year’s 2012 NEA Jazz Masters inductees include: Sheila Jordan, vocalist and educator; Von Freeman, tenor saxophonist and bandleader; Jack DeJohnette, drummer and pianist; Jimmy Owens, trumpeter, educator, and advocate; and Charlie Haden, bassist and bandleader. The festivities kicked off this year in regal fashion as Rocco Landesman, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts gave the opening comments about how rich the NEA’s tradition of celebrating and commemorating of America’s only art form. 2007 NEA Jazz Master Ramsey Lewis and last year’s inductee Wynton Marsalis, artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, also gave opening comments of the historical implications of the 30th Anniversary of this year’s jazz masters ceremony. NEA Jazz Master Phil Woods along with alto saxophonist Grace Kelly played “Things To Come” composed by former NEA Jazz Master Dizzy Gillespie. The two were backed by the stellar Jazz at Lincoln Orchestra lead by Wynton Marsalis. Drummer Jack DeJohnette was inducted by his mentor and fellow NEA Jazz Master Muhal Richard Abrams. Abrams helped Jack as a teen study and play both the piano and drums while growing up in Chicago, Illinois. Through Abram’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, Jack developed a love and passion to play both classical and jazz music which helped him decide to play music professionally. In the mid-1960’s Jack decided to move to New York City where he played with the late Rashied Ali in the John Coltrane Quintet. He got his first taste of success when he joined saxophonist Charles Lloyd in his first quartet where he played with a young pianist named Keith Jarrett. During the late 1960’s into the 1970’s, Jack backed and recorded with the likes of Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Special Edition, New Directions, and his long association with the Keith Jarrett Trio with bassist Gary Peacock. Today, Jack is still very active and just released his latest disc “Sound Travels” on the the eOne Music label. NEA Jazz Master Benny Golson gave the induction speech of 2012 inductee Von Freeman. Freeman, who couldn’t make this year’s ceremony due to illness, was given some praise and adoration by his sons Chico and Mark Freeman, who gave his induction speech. Earle Lavon Freeman, Sr, was born in Chicago, Illinois where he’s been a musical icon for the last 70 years. Von comes from that elite class of Chicago tenor saxophonists like Gene Ammons, Clifford Jordan, and the late Johnny Griffin. During the 1950’s he and his brothers George and Bruz were the house band at the famed Pershing Hotel in Chicago. Von played with a slew of great local musicians that included Jimmy Witherspoon, Sun Ra, and Andrew Hill. In 1972 he recorded his debut recording “Doin’ It Right Now” produced by Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Currently Von plays weekly at the New Apartment Lounge and Andy’s Jazz Club in Chicago. Bassist and bandleader Charlie Haden has given the world of music and jazz his unique blend of originality and heart. Since he made his way on the bandstand during the late 1950’s, Haden has been a trailblazer and relentless musician always striving to take music to the next level as well as always create new forms of roots music. From his days with saxophonist Ornette Coleman’s group, the quartet recorded the landmark recording for Atlantic Records, “The Shape of Jazz to Come.” But in 1969 Haden would record one of the most ambitious jazz recordings of the time. “Liberation Music Orchestra” was a record that fused the social themes of the times as well as free jazz that spoke volumes in the jazz community. The music was arranged and composed by Carla Bley and the orchestra has been recording sporadically over the last four decades. In addition to Haden’s orchestra, the three-time Grammy Award winner also fronts Quartet West. Charlie couldn’t attend the jazz masters ceremony due to his recovery from a recent surgery. His daughter Patra read his acceptance speech and acknowledged his many accomplishments on Charlie’s behalf. Vocalist, musical visionary, and NEA Jazz Master Jon Hendricks gave one of the most poignant speeches for his friend and contemporary, vocalist Sheila Jordan. Hendricks praised her accomplishments as a vocalist as well as keeping the vocal tradition alive by teaching the next generation of vocalists. Jordan, a Detroit native, comes from a great tradition and legacy of musicians that have made great and important strides in the world of jazz music. She developed her vocal style while singing in a local group named Skeeter, Mitch, and Jean. But it was her drive and determination that got her to move to New York City where she decided to throw herself into the thriving music scene. When she moved here she learned music theory and harmony by bassist Charles Mingus and pianist Lennie Tristano. Pianist George Russell discovered and recorded her on his “The Outer View” recording in 1962. Sheila made history by recording the first vocal record for Blue Note Records titled “Portrait of Sheila.” Throughout her career she’s recorded and performed with the Steve Kuhn Quartet and Harvie Swartz. Today she continues to teach jazz vocal workshops as well as perform all over the world. Trumpeter and educator Jimmy Owens is having a stellar 2012 so far. His latest IPO Recordings release “The Monk Project” celebrates and focuses on the compositions of pianist Thelonious Monk. In his 50 years in the business, the 68 year-old musician has been on the front lines for the betterment for working jazz musicians. As a board and active member of the Jazz Foundation of America, part of Jimmy’s lifework has been to help musicians seek funding for medical expenses, legal assistance, housing, and steady work. He founded the Musicians Emergency Fund due to the lack of support from the arts community and serve as a means to never negate the lives of many musicians that haven’t had the support or the able means to survive. Musicians that have benefited from this generous program were Odetta, Fats Domino, Clark Terry, Freddie Hubbard, Cecil Payne, and Sweet Georgia Brown. In addition to his dedication to the JFA, he’s also been a supporter and advocate for the Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians here in New York City. It’s Jimmy’s drive and passion that he’s fought State Politicians to repeal the 8.25% admission tax for clubs and major venues and to take those funds and contribute them to the AFM’s pension fund. This and his dedication to education in jazz music is why he’s been honored as one of this year’s NEA Jazz Master Inductees. Jimmy, who hails from the Bronx, New York, was exposed to jazz music when he was kid when his parents played the music. He wanted to play the trumpet and one of his first teacher’s as well as mentor, Dr. Donald Byrd, got him to take the instrument and studying it seriously. Over the years he’d back and play with some of jazz music’s leading innovators and icons. Musicians like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillispie, and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. Today he still teaches as well as serves as a mentor to many of today’s current jazz musicians and composers. Some of highlight performances of the evening included two separate duo performances including NEA Jazz Masters bassist Ron Carter and flutist Huber Laws in their rendition of “Little Waltz”/”Memories of Minnie.” Also, Jazz Masters vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and pianist Kenny Barron’s rendition of Dave Brubeck’s “In Your Own Sweet Way.” The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra under the direction of Wynton Marsalis did an outstanding job in arranging tributes throughout the concert to NEA Jazz Master Horace Silver featuring Dave Liebman, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Candido Camero, and the new trumpet sensation Ambrose Akinmusire. The Benny Carter and Frank Foster tribute also turned a lot of heads featuring saxophonists Frank Wess and Benny Golson. I must add that the National Endowment for the Arts have dedicated to the works and mission to keep the jazz legacy alive via the grants they award every year. Also, they’ve been in tune with the jazz community via journalists, the musicians, and the many jazz associations to help educate and get the word out about America’s only original art-form. The NEA has more info for fans to reach out into their community to support the arts. For more info please visit them on the web at arts.gov.
