PSN Changes and Game Violence Bill In OK - Press Pause Daily
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 04:00:00 02/08/12
PSN making some changes and a violent game tax on tap in Oklahoma.
SHOW NOTES:
Story 1:
So if you are a Playstation Network member, you probably got an email on Monday stating that there would be some changes on the way for the system.
According to Sony, stating today, your account will no longer be called a Playstation Network account, but would instead be called a Sony Entertainment Network account.
Now before you got and get worried that you’ll have to create a new name, or password, and go through a whole complicated process, Sony has said that this is just a change in name only.
According to them, “This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music, and more."
So I guess Sony is looking to create more synergy across their entertainment properties. Only time will tell if the move will be a good one.
http://www.gamespot.com/news/psn-accounts-undergoing-name-change-6349822
Story 2:
So another politician is trying to attack violent video games, this time in Oklahoma.
Democratic state representative William Fourkiller (which is a fairly ironic last name don’t ya think?) has introduced House Bill HB 2696. This bill would levy a 1% tax on any video game that receives an ESRB rating of Teen, Mature, or Adults Only. This is on top of any other existing sales tax. The money raised would go to create two new funds: one to get youth involved in outdoor activities, and one to with bullying prevention.
According to Fourkiller, games are a major cause of obesity and bullying in our society, but since they make a lot of money, could be part of the solution.
Of course, the game industry isn’t taking this lying down. Dan Hewitt of the Entertainment Software Association says that he is disappointed that politicians are still trying to attack gaming in a way that is patently unconstitutional. He also said that "Taxing First Amendment protected material based on its content is misguided."
So a lot of politicians REALLY don’t like violent video games. They keep trying to control them, and it always ends the same way. You’d think they would learn their lesson by now.

Mass For The Shut-Out: Imbolc, February 2, 2012
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 20:26:35 02/05/12
Imbolc in some places is a Sabbat greeted with a feeling of relief. We've had winter with us for a while, the brightness and merriness of Yule is in the past, and what's been left to many of us is simply cold and perhaps a bunch of snow, too! At Imbolc, we celebrate the first stirrings of spring, with the first shoots of the heartier crops pushing their heads through the snow to be seen!
We were made a promise at Samhain when we celebrated the life of the old year. That promise was re-stated at Yule, as the sun began its return to us. And Imbolc gives us the first tangible evidence that it is actually happening. We have the first actual evidence that spring is actually going to be!
Other paths, including the Christian, have flattered us by adopting our Sabbats, and this one is no exception. However, you sometimes might feel forced to dig deep if you want to learn about more than "Ground Hog Day". But that's OK, there is something very significant - and it gives an extra perspective to help us see the full importance of what Imbolc means!
And so, let's celebrate!
Blessed Be!

Newt on This Week: Mitt Can't Tell The Truth, Has A 'Character' Problem
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 21:00:11 01/29/12
video platform video management video solutions video player
Now, I'm going to assume that you didn't come in during the third act of Newt's career, and therefore you can appreciate just how funny it is when, on This Week , he's whining to Jake Tapper about how hard it is to pin someone down who will just lie about anything ! >
TAPPER: In many ways, you are where you are because of your debate performances. Last week, you had a couple that were not your strongest, to say the least.
GINGRICH: Yep.
TAPPER: Why do you think that was? What happened?
GINGRICH: I was amazed. I mean, I'm standing next to a guy who is the most blatantly dishonest answers I can remember in any presidential race in -- in my lifetime. And I've seen, I think, every presidential debate -- presidential campaign debate or virtually every one. And, you know, he would say things that were just plain not true.
Look, it's a little bit like yesterday's L.A. Times report. I mean, now it found 23 foreign accounts he never reported until he released his taxes. He would say -- he would say thing after thing after thing that just plain wasn't true.
And I had -- I don't know how you debate a person with civility if they're prepared to say things that are just plain factually false. And that's going to become a key part of this. I think the Republican establishment believes it's OK to say and do virtually anything to stop a genuine insurgency from winning because they are very afraid of losing control of the old order.
We tried a moderate in 1996 for president. He lost. We tried a moderate in 2008 for president. He lost. It's very hard to take Romneycare and Obamacare and have a debate and have the Republican win that debate. You need to have a conservative who is a very big distance away from Obama, because you've got to have the space so that, in fact, you can communicate with the American people.
TAPPER: I want to follow up on some of these comments you're making about Mitt Romney. The race has taken something of a nasty turn. Here's an ad that you are currently running in Florida.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
(UNKNOWN): What kind of man would mislead, distort and deceive just to win an election? This man would, Mitt Romney. If we can't trust what Mitt Romney says about his own record, how can we trust him on anything?
(END VIDEO CLIP)
TAPPER: It sounds as if you're saying in that ad, and here this morning, that Mitt Romney is unfit and does not have the character to be president.
GINGRICH: I am saying that he would not be where he is today, the debates this week wouldn't have been where they were, if he had told the truth. And I think that's a very serious problem for somebody. I think that you look at -- again, he's supposedly a great manager, yet he can't explain 23 different foreign accounts that weren't reported. He's a great manager. He can't explain being on the board of directors of the company which got the largest Medicare fine in history for fraud?
Somehow, every time it's bad, he didn't know about it or he wasn't aware about it. He didn't really understand the Planned Parenthood by law, the largest abortion provider in the United States, is in Romneycare? Romneycare literally defines Planned Parenthood in a key -- in a part of the bill. He didn't seem to quite know it.
Every time you turn around, this great manager consistently doesn't understand whatever it is that would have hurt him. And you just have to look back and say, why can't you be candid with the American people? You cannot be president of the United States if you cannot be honest and candid with the American people. And that's compounded, frankly, by a number of the ads he runs, which are just plain false.
TAPPER: So you're saying that he does not have the character to be president of the United States, because he's, in your view, not honest.
GINGRICH: I'm saying it is a very -- it's a -- it is a very serious problem when you have somebody who on item after item after item -- I mean, the clip you had just now, he knows what he said in that clip is not true. I did not resign in disgrace. I did not pay a fine. And, in fact, CNN ran an entire piece recently in which they pointed out that on every single substantive count in the ethics investigation, every single one, that I was vindicated, including vindication by a federal judge, vindication by the Internal Revenue Service, vindication by the Federal Elections Commission . Now, Romney knows that.
(CROSSTALK)
TAPPER: Well, the clip -- the clip...
GINGRICH: So he's run a campaign of vilification.
TAPPER: The clip I just played was actually one of your ads, but let's get to that Romney ad that you're talking about...
GINGRICH: No, no, but I'm talking about the earlier -- I'm talking about -- I'm talking about the clip you showed of him campaigning yesterday.
TAPPER: Oh, OK.
GINGRICH: What he said yesterday, this wasn't true.
TAPPER: There...
GINGRICH: And so at some point, I don't quite -- I don't quite -- to be honest, Jake, I don't quite know how you deal with an opponent, because you want to deal with them with civility, you want to deal with them in a positive way. I want to talk about big issues.
I talked about space this week, which I think is important for the country's future. I talked about housing. I talked about creating jobs. I talked about the record I had working with Ronald Reagan to create jobs and the record I had working with Bill Clinton to create jobs. We talked about welfare reform as the first great entitlement reform.
There are all sorts of positive things. We have a proposal on Social Security which would allow every young American the option of having a personal Social Security account on the model of Galveston, Texas, and the country of Chile. So there are a lot of positive things.
And if you'll notice, when you get outside the zone where Romney carpet-bombs with Wall Street money, and you look at what's happening in the rest of the country, I'm ahead in all three national polls that were released this week. I'm ahead by a big margin, because when you come to positive ideas, I represent real change in Washington, I represent unleashing the spirit of the American people to get us back as a country, rebuilding the country we love. And when we get to a positive idea campaign, I consistently win.
It's only when he can mass money to focus on carpet-bombing with negative ads that he gains any traction at all.

First of all, we usually pick up the most recent virals, but this is an exception. The reason for this is to show that a video can go viral even without special effects and a huge budget. (Ok, have to admit it should not take so long…) The point is, make it look genuine and interesting. Some say it has to be horrible or horny, that’s of course also an option

I Was Just In The Neighborhood. I stayed at BC a few hours longer than the rest of our group not to take in the scenery, but to catch up with my old friend Dawa. Jeff was the first to head down and Steve and John followed a bit later leaving just me, Karma and Passang from our workshop group. While technically I?m still a client here in BC, I?ve finally managed to get the staff to understand that I?m ?one of them? and don?t need to be catered to in the same way as one of the participants. They?ve been doing an outstanding job ensuring the success of the group but when it?s just me up here they can turn off and just hang out. In fact, I encourage that kind of behavior! With Karma and Passang kicking back and enjoying the fine weather, the rest of the camp staff relaxed as well and I couldn?t have been happier. I know I?ve always got the best staff in the world to help me out but the reason I come back year after year is because these guys become lifelong friends of mine. Camp cook Dawa is a perfect example of that. Dawa and I became close during the 2003 expedition I was on with Ben Clark. Now, my job on that expedition was to document as much of it as possible but I was not a climber. So, Ben would disappear for weeks at a time further up on the mountain leaving me in Dawa?s care. That was my first experience in the Himalayas and I was extremely uncomfortable with being waited on hand and foot by the staff every day. Dawa was the one who listened to my incessant complaints about wanting to wash my own dishes and explained to me why it was important to just be OK with it. The staff has an incredible amount of pride in what they do and always strive to do the best job they can. I need to let them do what they do and if I am uncomfortable, just let them know how much I value the work they are doing for my by telling them how much I appreciate it. I took his advice and we became friends. That friendship was a crucial component of that 2003 experience for me and I?m not sure if I would have enjoyed the expedition if I hadn?t had Dawa. Let me ad to that sentiment: The Rest of Everest may not have existed if it weren?t for Dawa making that first trip such an amazing experience. I owe a lot to him and his generosity, kindness, patience and hard work. I thought I would be able to tell him all of that in person in 2007 when I returned to Everest with my friend Scott Jacobs but, alas, it was not to be. Mountain Tribes was scheduled to have a team on the North Side and Dawa was going to be the cook but 2 weeks before the climbing season began the permit was switched to the South Side. When Scott and I walked into BC, Dawa was already encamped on the other side of the mountain. I was crushed because I had come so far from home and was so looking forward to spending some time with Dawa. This year everything worked out perfectly and I was finally able to tell Dawa ?thanks? and to reminisce about that 2003 expedition now 6 years in the past. My, how time flies! I was also able to finally show him my favorite portions of the film myself and that was great fun. Another case of art imitating life imitating art. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined how that 2003 expedition was going to change my life. Thanks Dawa. Total Running Time: 34:04

My Meat Foot. Ok, Ok, Ok, so maybe I shouldn?t have gone all the way to ABC at 21,000 feet. The funny thing is that the altitude wasn?t a problem. Only in the morning. I?d wake up and would have my vision be somewhat spotty, strobing and tracing. After I?d stumble down the path to the ?bathroom? and nearly careen down the slope into the Romanian tents (ABC has no ground, it?s all a glacial moraine which means it?s all loose rock like a scree slope) my vision would clear up. Usually just as I was pulling down my pants to do my business in the open air toilet I?d look over and see a member of the British Royal Navy Team squatting on his open air toilet and we?d wave to each other. Friendship in misery. After a time at ABC, I realized it was beautiful but it sucked up there. You just can?t rest. The entire time you can feel your body deteriorating. So, it was time to climb down. I made the 22km in one very long day but it was very painful. In fact I totally messed up my left foot. I?ve never had a problem with my boots, but leave it to Everest to change that. The trail is only loose rock and every step I took pounded my toenail into the front of the boot. By the time I made it back to BC, I knew it was a bad situation. I had a terrible pain in that Big Toe, but I was just too tired to deal with it that evening. I slept and the next morning inspected the damage. My toe didn?t look like a toe anymore. In fact, one of my French friends, Bertrand, described it as a sausage floating in water. It was really surreal to look at my toe and think it was an alien. Luckily, my Russian friends have a doctor here at Base Camp. I?m really good friends with him, Dmitri. I hobbled over to the camp and went into their Comm tent. He wasn?t there but some other friends were. Vova said he thought I looked in pain. I took off my sock and they all yelped in Russian. Vova jumped up, slapped me on the shoulder and ran out to find Dr. Dima. Minutes later my foot was in this huge surgeon?s fleeced lap. He said it would take a small operation and that I would be fine. He said something in Russian to Vova who immediately jumped up and disappeared from the tent. Seconds later he returned with a bottle of whiskey. Dima handed the bottle and suggested I drink up.?For pain.? I grabbed the bottle and thought of every Old West movie I?d ever seen, looking around for a wooden spoon or something to put between my teeth and bite down on. I raised the bottle to my lips and was about to drink when Dima grabbed the bottle. The joke was on me. The whiskey was actually rubbing alcohol and he was only kidding about me needing to drink up. Apparently Russian airlines do not allow the passengers to transport running alcohol in their luggage, yet they DO allow unbelievably high proof liquor. Dima simply fills an empty whiskey bottle with rubbing alcohol and can easily sneak it through security! I washed my foot, then Dima shot my toe up with novocain and sterilized his tools with the alcohol and cut here and there releasing pressure, then cut away the nail. It was gross, but I was fascinated! Afterwards, he put a ton of Russian antibiotic cream on it and wrapped it in sterile gauze his wife had carefully prepared in St Petersburg (she?s apparently an anesthesiologist). In 30 minutes it was all taken care of and only hurt a lot for a minute. That was 3 days ago and every morning Dima comes over and gently changes my dressing. These people are so great. I offered to pay since I have some cash on me but Dima just raised his finger to his head and twirled his finger to say I was crazy. I almost cried. I would be totally in trouble of infection without him. But he really cares about my well being and I?m being taken care of with immaculate care. He said I was his first American patient and I said he was my first Russian doctor. All in broken English, of course. I?ll never forget the generosity I?ve experienced here. I?m sitting in their Comm tent right now using their generator since mine is busted again. Everyone is glad I?m here and it?s wonderful. Everest North Side would be a totally dead landscape if it weren?t for all of the great people. They?re what I?m going to remember, not the Mountain. Jon Miller Total Running Time: 23:28

C++ and Beyond 2011: Scott, Andrei and Herb - Ask Us Anything
[LESS INFO] 3 VIEWS | ADDED 15:55:00 01/03/12
I was able to attend C++ and Beyond 2011 and it was a tremendous experience. I captured some great footage from the event for C9, like this end-of-last-day panel - Ask Us Anything - with Scott, Andrei and Herb . Great questions and excellent answers. This is the third and final panel from C%B 2011 to air on C9. The other two panels: C++11 and Concurrency and Parallelism - are very well worth your time if you haven't had a chance to watch/listen to them yet.
Thanks Andrei Alexandrescu , Scott Meyers and Herb Sutter for putting on such a great event for C++ developers and for allowing Channel 9 to broadcast some of it. I am so thrilled to learn that C++ and Beyond 2012 will take place August 5-8, 2012 ! I encourage you to attend (I know I'll be there!). It will be well worth your (and your company's) time. The way I think about C%B is: Mind-bending C++ content that's also practical , presented by industry experts who are very engaging, passionate about C++ and very approachable. The folks in attendance are stellar native developers from around the world, employing C++ in a variety of contexts.
Make sure to check out all the C%B 2011 content we're lucky enough to have on C9
Enjoy! Learn! Go native!
