Kevin Devine & The Goddamn Band - "Off-screen": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
As Kevin Devine started work on his sixth solo album, Between the Concrete & Clouds, he decided to make some fundamental changes. The first notable difference was the way he structured his day when he woke up each morning. Having spent most of his time on the road during the last few years, he needed some adjustment when he was stationary, at home in Brooklyn. "As odd as it is, there is a routine to your day as a touring musician, so it's always jarring when I come home from being on tour," he says. "So I started to go into our rehearsal space almost like someone going in to his office, from like 2 to 7 o'clock every day. I was coming up with melodies and multi-tracking ideas, and not worrying about lyrics right away." And this marked the second big change for the New York City-born singer and songwriter. Rather than starting his process with a tight focus on the words, he allowed himself to follow "the things you unconsciously stumble upon%mdashalmost like the lyrics are a color more than a narrative." Not, of course, that it meant any less of a commitment to that element of his writing. "I love words so much," he says, "that I think I've kind of overstuffed my songs sometimes, at the expense of melodic strength or concision. I tend to write songs that are complicated, in terms of the people in them and what they're going through. So the point this time was to make a record that still dealt with those themes, with what was happening in my head, but to do it in four-minute pop ... Authors@Google: Charles Seife
Charles Seife visits Google's New York, NY office to discuss his book "Proofiness: The Dark Arts of Mathematical Deception." This event took place on December 1, 2011, as part of the Authors@Google series. "Proofiness," as Charles Seife explains in this eye-opening book, is the art of using pure mathematics for impure ends, and he reminds readers that bad mathematics has a dark side. It is used to bring down beloved government officials and to appoint undeserving ones (both Democratic and Republican), to convict the innocent and acquit the guilty, to ruin our economy, and to fix the outcomes of future elections. This penetrating look at the intersection of math and society will appeal to readers of Freakonomics and the books of Malcolm Gladwell. Charles Seife, a journalist with Science magazine, has also written for New Scientist, Scientific American, The Economist, Wired UK, and The Sciences, among many other publications. His previous titles include Alpha & Omega and Zero. He received an MS in Probability Theory and Artificial Intelligence from Yale. Patriots and Giants to Play in the Super Bowl... AGAIN! and Goobye to the Great Joe Paterno!
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 12:03:10 01/23/12
I'm Lynn Lumpkin CRWENewswire Sports Commentator. This is the Sports Corner. Four years after New York stunned previously undefeated New England in the Arizona desert, they'll play a Super Bowl sequel. The Patriots are rolling into the Super Bowl having won 10 straight, with their last loss being to, you guessed it, the Giants, 24-20 back in early November. New England last won the Super Bowl in 2005. Patriots versus Giants, who will lift the Super Bowl trophy? Happy Valley was perfect for Joe Paterno, a place that "JoePa" knew best, where he not only won more football games than any other major college coach, but won them the right way: with integrity and sportsmanship. A place where character came first, championships second. A sainted figure at Penn State for almost half a century, Paterno lost his battle with cancer and died yesterday at age 85. We here at the Sports Corner would like to send our condolences and best wishes to the Paterno family and all who morn the loss of one of the greatest coaches in college history. Thank you for joining me and stay with us for all your sports updates.
