NATURE | Raccoon Nation | Living For the City | PBS
The raccoon's intelligence, adaptable nature, and omnivorous diet all help the species thrive in urban landscapes. When the lights go down in cities across North America, another world is revealed, populated by shady little characters that live alongside us, but exist in the margins. These pint-size problem solvers are smart, adaptable and omnivorous, and they love a good challenge. Welcome to the world of urban raccoons. With their busy little hands, they can do what other would-be urban animals can't %mdash open doors, get into attics, and raid secured trash cans. And they are especially fond of big cities, like Chicago, New York, and Toronto %mdash the raccoon capital of the world. In cities everywhere, wherever they've been introduced, they have done very, very well. It seems that the more obstacles you throw in their way, the smarter they get. In an effort to outwit raccoons, we may be pushing their brain development and perhaps even sending them down a new evolutionary path. One biologist who has been studying raccoons for 25 years believes the city life is in fact cultivating "%uumlber-raccoons," ready to take over the world. Only time will tell just how advanced this "nation" of urban raccoons will become. "Raccoon Nation" premieres on PBS Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 8/7c (check local listings) and is part of the 30th season of the Peabody and Emmy award-winning series produced by Thirteen in association with WNET.ORG for PBS. "Give Me A Beer" - Song
I love recycling! That's why I thought I would bring out this classic song from my band the Fragile Hum. You thought I only liked to make talk shows about beer, but what most of you didn't know is that I also wrote a song about beer. This performance of "Give Me A Beer" was recorded at the Velvet Lounge in Washington, DC in September 2003. It features James Knott on vocals, Todd Huyghe on guitar, Gene Moore on bass and Nathan Lorentz on drums. The Fragile Hum was the best band ever - better than the Beatles. :) Here is a link to a demo recording of "Give Me A Beer" that you can download for your iPod or MP3 player. agileh.com If you use the song to make a music video about beer I will post it to our website! Thanks for watching and listening. Let me know if you'd like me to upload more Fragile Hum songs. From: AgileHProductions Views: 312 9 ratings Time: 03:38 More in Music

Demi Moore Inhaling Nitrous Oxide?
After being hospitalized for exhaustion, sources are saying the actress has been on a downward spiral for the past year---dancing on tables, doing whip-its and abusing prescription drugs! NEW DETAILS ABOUT DEMI MOORE'S HOSPITALIZATION ARE STARTING TO COME OUT...AND SURPRISINGLY, FRIENDS SAY, SHE'S BEEN ON A DOWNWARD SPIRAL FOR THE PAST YEAR... AN INSIDER TELLS PEOPLE MAGAZINE "She wasn't sleeping as well, didn't seem to be eating and looked really gaunt." AND ANOTHER ADDS, "Demi is a mess." A FEW WEEKS AGO, THE ACTRESS WAS SPOTTED AT A CLUB IN LA, PARTYING AND DIRTY DANCING. AN EYEWITNESS TELLS US WEEKLY, QUOTE, "She was trashed, she was table dancing while three guys sat there watching." IT'S BEEN REPORTED THAT SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND A SEIZURE CAUSED BY INHALING A DANGEROUS AMOUNT OF NITROUS OXIDE -- AS IN "WHIP-ITS" -- WERE THE REASON BEHIND HER HOSPITALIZATION MONDAY NIGHT. BUT SOURCES CLOSE TO DEMI AND ASHTON SAY HER PRESCRIPTION DRUG USE HAD BECOME A MAJOR PROBLEM AS WELL. ONE INSIDER TELLS PEOPLE MAG, "It was a sticking point for Ashton. He wanted her to take care of herself and get a hold of things, and she wouldn't." WONDER IF THAT'S WHY ASHTON'S NOT SHOWING MUCH CONCERN FOR HIS ESTRANGED WIFE...WHILE ALL OF DEMI'S DRAMA'S BEEN PLAYING OUT IN LA, ASHTON'S BEEN LIVIN IT UP IN SAO PAULO BRAZIL, PARTYING WITH GIRLS AT NIGHTCLUBS -- TWEETING PICS OF HIMSELF "SURFING" IN THE STREETS, AND SAMPLING THE...HOUSE COCKTAILS... Plastic Caps Sculpture in Time-lapse
[LESS INFO] 3 VIEWS | ADDED 00:46:00 01/13/12
Beautiful time-lapse imagery of the Plastic Caps Sculpture featured at the Green City Festival in Austin. Always on the lookout for new inspiration, George Sabra has recently become aware of the artistic possibilities inherent in the world of plastic. "Every second thousands of bottles of water and soda are being tossed," he explains. Thus, when a neighbor brought him a collection of plastic bottle caps and explained that the caps are not always accepted for recycling, Sabra was intrigued and challenged. "Every time I walked past those colorful caps, I realized that they had such beautiful artistic potential, but the question was 'for what?'" The answer came one morning over a cup of coffee. He explains "There is this café where I go and sit outside beside beautiful water, trees, and native plants. While there, I happened to notice a plant called a bulrush reaching up toward the sky. It had such clean lines, and tapering ends - blowing in the wind. In a moment I realized that this wild plant was my inspiration for my bottle caps. In an instant I could clearly see how to put the natural world and the man made world together." With the help of more than 800 volunteers who collected and others student volunteer cleaned and sort thousands and thousands of bottle caps, and lids Sabra's vision began to take shape. The result is a beautiful and colorful 21 foot high sculpture that made its debut at the 2011 "Green City Festival" in Austin, Texas. Says Sabra, "When we unveiled it, the crowd that had gathered seemed pulled toward it, as though it were a magnet. Then, as they walked around it and looked upward watching it blowing in the wind, they gasped when they realized it was a 'plant.' They got it. It was a very emotional moment!" The plastic caps sculpture was on display outside Austin City Hall during the Green City Festival on Sunday October 23, 2011. Sculptor George Sabra create a large scale public sculpture 21 feet made from thousands of discarded, reclaimed plastic caps and lids. The Lake Travis Underwater Cleanup is the BIGGEST scuba diving and shoreline cleanup in Texas. The event invites several hundred certified scuba divers and shoreline volunteers to help round-up trash from the bottom of Lake Travis and 11 Travis County Parks around the lake. The cleanup is followed by a volunteer thank-you party & is a great event for ALL ages! RAIN OR SHINE! September 11th we united with volunteers across the nation to make the tenth anniversary of 9/11 one of service and remembrance. 2011 RESULTS - 848 volunteers (379 Divers, 398 shoreline, and 71 party volunteers). 1.64 Tons of litter removed. $37,725.45 worth of Volunteer Hours! Most Unique items found: Divers-40 Foot Deep Anchor and Shoreline-Old Radio. Be the Change Austin recruited 1,000 volunteers this year to make wonderful things happen all over the City of Austin. Be the Change is an annual national day of service coordinated by South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) to inspire and foster civic engagement through volunteerism and community service. Every year, thousands of participants across the country contribute innumerable hours of community service in the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi's famous quote, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." Be the Change has allocated 300 of their Volunteers to a work day at Montopolis Greenbelt. In a part of the city not known for its greenbelts, Montopolis Greenbelt is a property with rich historical relevance, and is in substantial need of care and maintenance. Previously used as a dumping ground, stakeholders have held workdays wherein approximately 2,000 tires, an air conditioning unit, a washing machine, and a dishwasher were pulled out of the greenbelt proper and its waterways. The property is also ravaged by invasive plants, and full of trash and debris. Undoubtedly much progress will be made on this continually improving natural and historical preserve with the help of Be the Change Volunteers. In many creative fields, space is an essential design element.
It might be referred to as 'negative space' in art, 'white space' in graphic design, or pauses between notes in music. Defining space is an essential part of the architect's job.
Understanding how creative professionals use space can help us consider our own life choices in a new light. Ignite Corvallis 4 Views: 7 Trash: Normal
