Once you understand what the people are saying, it is one of the most powerful and creative videos we have seen from Tibet. The camera focuses on random Tibetans, each statement begins with "I am Tibetan" and the next speaker goes on to describe the reason. Student: Independent Learner
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 23:00:00 01/11/12
Talk title: Empowering the student to be an independent learner Every year as high school kids approach college application season, we advise them that yes, grade point averages and SAT scores are important - but what colleges really want is self-directed, passionate learners. TEDxManhattanBeach - Karen Hunter Quartz - Empowering the Student to be an Independent Learner What if we designed a school that from kindergarten showed that kids were just that? In 2009 UCLA partnered with local community groups and the Los Angeles Unified School District to create a charter-like school near downtown Los Angeles. This school combines inspired teachers who understand the community with new ePortfolio platforms that allow students to track their educational progress over time. Young people like Janice Ninez can easily fall through the cracks in huge, impersonal high schools. When she transferred to the UCLA Community School, a teacher asked Janice, "How can I make this class better for you?" and in that moment turned her from a failing student into one who was inspired to learn. Great teachers, and tools like personalized ePortfolio platforms can help students find their voice, capture their intellectual identity and direct their own learning. Karen Quartz is the Director of Research and Communications at UCLA's Center X, and Director of Research and Development at the UCLA Community School, a K-12 public school in Local District 4 of the Los Angeles Unified School District. She earned her Ph.D. in Education from UCLA in 1994 and has served as a researcher at the University

Craig Shirley: How Pearl Harbor - and December 1941 - Made America a Global Power
The bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on December 7, 1941 killed over 2400 Americans and led directly to the entry of the United States into World War II. In his powerful, thickly researched new book, December 1941: 31 Days That Changed America and Saved the World, Craig Shirley chronicles the day-by-day shifts in American culture, politics, and national identity through that horrible month. Before December, Shirley tells Reason's Nick Gillespie, a solid majority opposed entry into World War II and the "eminently respectable" America First movement was poised to help select the next president of the United States. Non-interventionism was so universal that Franklin Roosevelt himself had campaigned for his third term as president on a promise to keep "American boys" out of European wars. By the start of 1942, says Shirley, the long tradition of isolationism was over, never to be seen again. The nation that had rejected the League of Nations after World War I helped create the United Nations and America quickly became not simply a global economic, political, and military power but the dominant player on the globe. The author of many books, including two biographies of Ronald Reagan and a forthcoming book on Newt Gingrich, Shirley talks with Reason's Nick Gillespie about what was gained - and lost - in the historical hinge point that was December 1941. 2011-11-30 1st journal, Mayan day 7 Ben/Reed Text Discussion http://www.scribd.com/doc/74344029 ET 101 Cosmic Instruction Manual Intro: As with all of my videos marked LIVE, the video is made first – then I come to the word processor to see what will come here, that I can share. Having already uploaded one video, today, and created this other live one, I had rather thought such work for today was finished – but it appears not. Why not? I am getting a number of distress signals from friends online – messages of sharing that show me they're having a very rough time of it. So, naturally, this heart responds. There is that in this video that will brighten spirits, so I am preparing it as the second upload of the day. So, may it go forth to brighten your spirit, whoever you are. Nothing is really personal, anymore. I don't know, at this point, if anything ever was. I suspect not. But, that doesn't really matter. What matters is now, and in this moment this heart is quite sure that we are not persons – and we are not alone. Let's take another look at that word, “alone,” shall we? What do we see? What I see is “all one.” With the very minor addition, actually replication of one letter, we get all one, in place of alone – much like “whole” also contains “hole,” the seeming contradition or opposite. Words are interesting that way. They're speaking on many levels – to us and to the broader reality. Take that word, “reality.” What do you see? I see this: “real I tie.” Tying I to that which is real = reality. Works for me. Oh, and then there's my favorite, which is “good-bye,” which is an actual, factual contraction from English of an earlier age, meaning “God be with ye.”...

Pension Reform and Union Shenanigans in San Diego
"Carl DeMaio, the councilman who's the primary author of [the comprehensive pension reform ballot measure] could be the Howard Jarvis of the pension reform movement." --Chris Reed, San Diego Union Tribune On November 8, 2011, San Diego's Comprehensive Pension Reform ballot measure qualified for the June ballot. Like so many other cities around the country, San Diego is facing a fiscal crisis. Currently, the city's pension fund budget is facing an unfunded liability of over $2 billion. The Comprehensive Pension Reform ballot measure, if it passes in June, will switch new public employees to 401(k)-style plans, put an end to "pension spiking" and cap pensionable employee compensation for five years. As mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio puts it, "all eyes are on San Diego" because San Diego could become a national model for pension reform. The labor unions didn't sit back and watch the signature gathering process. Instead, they created a fake organization that took out ads warning people that their identities could be stolen if they sign a petition and sent burly men to initimidate people at signature gathering locations.Approximately 6.5 minutes. Produced by Paul Feine and Alex Manning. Go to reason.tv for downloadable versions and subscribe to Reason.tv's YouTube Channel to receive automatic notifications when new material goes live.
