[LESS INFO] 5 VIEWS | ADDED 15:59:18 01/10/12
Winter is a great time to get out and enjoy a host of winter sports. Everything from ice fishing to winter camping get you out of the house and into the crisp fresh air. Many of these winter activities involve frozen bodies of water. It doesn't matter if your riding on a snowmobile, gliding along on skies, or crunching by on snowshoes, crossing ice covered water ways need to hold your full respect. It can happen in an instant and without any warning. You could find yourself plunging into the frigid water below the ices surface.
Now this doesn't have to be a death sentence, however depending on your location and how well you are prepared for such an event the end result can vary greatly.
Glen Hooper from Northwest Ontario is an avid winter enthusiast and a writer for winter trekking.com. He spends a lot of time traversing the rugged Canadian terrain in both summer and winter. The prospect of falling through the ice is something he takes very seriously and has put a lot of forethought into what he needs to survive such and ordeal. Join me as I visit with Glen on what he has readied to aid in increasing his survival skills after a plunge into frigid waters.

Video: Update in Minot Drowning Case
[LESS INFO] 4 VIEWS | ADDED 08:28:00 11/22/10
We begin tonight with an update on yesterday's tragic drowning in a Minot river. On Saturday, a 12-year-old Minot boy died after falling into the water behind the Gold Nugget trailer park. A nine-year-old boy was also rescued - after first responders found him clinging to a piece of ice to stay afloat. Minot Police say they recovered that boy from the water, and he was treated for some scrapes and bruises, then soon released from Trinity Hospital. The two boys had reportedly been walking along the riverbank when they slipped and fell into the river. Because of yesterday's snow storm, the riverbank was snow covered and slippery in the area where they fell. Officers want to remind everyone that the ice on area rivers ss still very unstable. They say even with this week's cold temperatures, it's still extremely dangerous to go on or near the water. Meantime, the Minot Fire Department says if you're with someone who falls through the ice, don't run up to point where he or she fell. If there are other people around, they say have someone else call 9-1-1, and keep your eye on the spot where the person fell in, so that you can direct and help first responders. They say you can also throw anything long enough - like a cord or rope - to the victim to hang onto. But do it immediately, before hypothermia makes it too difficult for the person to grab on.
