Good News/Bad News on New Unemployment Figures
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 21:00:09 12/02/11
Although it sounds like good news, I'd hold off on the cheering just yet : >
The American unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to its lowest level in two and a half years in November, despite the many global crises batting against the economy.
The unemployment rate fell to 8.6 percent, after having been stuck around 9 percent for most of 2011, the Labor Department said Friday . Additionally, a separate government survey found that the nation’s employers added 120,000 jobs last month, after adding 100,000 jobs in October.
So lower unemployment rate and slightly more jobs added this month. Good, right? Well.... >
The jobless rate fell partly because more workers got jobs, but also because about 315,000 workers dropped out of the labor force, and the jobless rate counts only people who are actively looking for work. Even so, the country still has a backlog of more than 13 million unemployed workers, whose periods of unemployment averaged an all-time high of 40.9 weeks.
“They say businesses are refusing to look at résumés from the unemployed,” said Esther Perry, 59, of Bedford, Mass., who participated in a recent report on unemployed workers put together by USAction, a liberal coalition. “What do you think my chances are? Once unemployment runs out, I don’t know what I will do.”
So now we're facing more chronically unemployed people who are simply falling off the rolls, never to be considered by a politician again. As Robert Borosage from Campaign for America's Future puts it: >
“This fragile growth now faces fierce headwinds, with austerity in Europe and Great Britain driving those economies into recession. The financial crisis in Europe will impact zombie banks in the United States.
“While it looks like that Congress finally may use small band aids to attempt to stop the economic bleeding like the payroll tax extension and extending unemployment benefits, they are not doing what is needed to push this economy back in to firing on all cylinders.”
“We need Congress and the Federal Reserve to act now to put people back to work. Use the opportunity posed by record low interest rates to rebuild our decrepit infrastructure. Provide young workers with jobs in urban corps and green corps and the non-profit sector. Provide aid to states and localities to avoid more devastating layoffs of teachers and cops.”

Tarryl Clark: Michele Bachman stands for BP, not us.
Visit tarrylclark.com for more information. EMILY's List Candidate Tarryl Clark (MN-06) is fighting to remove Cong. Michele Bachmann from office. Putting big business before American families, Bachmann went to bat for BP this week, saying the company shouldn't be "fleeced" by the government and claiming mandated relief funds are just a "redistribution of wealth." That's right -- Democrats, in Bachmann's mind, are the ones spinning this crisis to make a political point. From: emilyslist Views: 5252 31 ratings Time: 00:31 More in News & Politics

Beach Walk #158 - You too can seed a business!
[LESS INFO] 21 VIEWS | ADDED 03:48:49 10/24/06
I learned about kiva.org over at Jon Rawlinson's blog, The RAD Blog .
Kiva was started by former employees of Tivo, PayPal and Google. It connects you with budding business owners in developing countries via microloans. These are very small loans, under $1000 typically, but based on very small amounts from lenders. Now, you can find a tailor in Cambodia and lend $25 towards his business. And also find a farmer in Honduras, and loan her $25. Since several lenders actually make up the bulk of an individual loan, the risk is spread wide. Not that it needs to be. Microloans have an average 96% repayment rate, and so far, Kiva is batting 100%.
Each loan is managed by a local business partner, who screens applicants and collects a small amount of interest to administer the loans. As a lender, 100% of your loan goes directly to the recipient. The "interest" you receive is in helping another person grow a sustainable enterprise. PayPal processes all the payments, both your initial loan and your repayment, all without any fees. You are repaid as the business owner pays back the loan, typically over a 12 month period.
Kiva's site shows you a picture and bio of each recipient, and also logs each repayment. You can rate projects as especially worthy and help them get funded even faster.
This is a perfect project in my book and I hope you will consider participating.

Hong Kong Condemns Attack On Democratic Leader
[LESS INFO] 3 VIEWS | ADDED 04:51:00 08/24/06
WONG: The violent attack on the Vice President of the Democratic Party in Hong Kong has brought widespread condemnation. Albert Ho was severely beaten by three men armed with baseball bats and batons. HereÂÂs more
STORY: People from all walks of life are visiting Ho, who's recovering in Mary Hospital.
14 Legislators are condemning the violence ? Hong Kong Legislative Council member, Leung Kwok Hung, says he received a threatening letter.
Ho is in a stable condition. His face is swollen, and nose - broken. For now he does not need to go through surgery.
But despite the injuries, Ho won't back down.
[LEE WING-TAT, HONG KONG DEMOCRATIC PARTY CHAIRMAN]: "Suffering from this attack, he will not give up any thing he does as the member of Hong Kong Legislative, nor will he give up anything in his Law Office."
Council members want to send a message out that violence against politicians will not be tolerated.
[LI YONGDA, HONG KONG DEMOCRATIC PARTY PRESIDENT]: "We should not give a wrong impression to gangsters that after attacking public figures like Liang Tianwei, Zheng Jinghan, Li Pengfei and now Albert Ho, they can still escape punishment by law. Having to send this message is a big shame to Hong Kong. We hope police can arrest them."
Police investigation will continue. Political party events, law offices and business will be a major focus.
People with knowledge of the attackers are asked to contact Hong Kong police.
